"Dancing with the Stars": Emotional Chaz Bono put out of his misery

Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer perform on "Dancing with the Stars," Oct. 24, 2011.

(CBS) After Chaz Bono's difficult tango to the "Phantom of the Opera" on Monday night, his mom got upset. Very upset. Perhaps she will be relieved that her boy - whose astoundingly equitable personality had been a fine feature of the competition - was finally voted off Tuesday by the grouchy grannies at home.

Monday night, Cher had tweeted in reference to judge Bruno Tonioli's criticisms of her son: "I COULD TEACH HIS LITTLE ARM WAVING ASS SOME MANNERS! Critique CHAZ'S DANCE STYLE, MOVEMENTS ETC,.BUT DON'T MAKE FUN OF MY CHILD ON NAT.TV."

No mom wants to hear her boy referred to with the words: "It was like watching a cute little penguin trying to be a big menacing bird of prey." This had, indeed, been the description Tonioli had offered.

In truth, Bono has clearly been in physical pain, as well as some emotional anguish, as the judges continued to offer him love tougher than any seen in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." But let's return to Bono's final anguish in a moment.

Let's dwell for a little while on Nancy Grace. After managing to fulfill her potential with a mediocre - as opposed to merely awful - performance, she had turned to partner Tristan McManus and declared that he wasn't, after all, Hitler, the entire Third Reich, nor Mussolini.

Nancy, Hitler had a mustache, no one in the Third Reich spoke with an Irish accent and Mussolini was bald. These little facts, therefore, tend to exclude the hairy-headed, clean-shaven, Irish McManus.

Ricki Lake, meanwhile, is having a very hard time being covered with not only her own sweat, but also that of her partner Derek Hough. She finds it "disgusting." But mutual sweat-swapping can be a very liberating experience. And how can she tell whose sweat is whose anyway?

This was all part of a mini-shrink session, as all of the stars bared their souls about how very, very hard it is to be performing these dances and appearing on this show. David Arquette angsts about whether he is good enough, whether he should even be doing this. Hope Solo cannot stop her tears. She has endured "five weeks of hell."

It was as if we needed to call their fellow-sufferers from previous series and ask them to join in with Occupy "Dancing with the Stars."

This show is clearly cruelty for beauty's sake. These poor people are like beagles who are being held captive in order to test mascara or lipstick. Well, except that the beagles don't get paid.

It was left to Martina McBride to offer a little balance by standing quietly on stage and singing a song about how tough it is when you get cancer. Then, we focused on Bono's pain.

"If you're an overweight woman in this competition losing weight they love you," moaned Cher's boy. "But if you're a overweight guy trying to do this competition and getting in shape, they penalize you for it and call you a penguin."

Some might feel he had a point. No one can joke about overweight women, other than the women themselves. The roly-polyness of men seems to be fair game.

Bono wasn't finished. He felt that Tonioli made him feel like "a fat troll who dances with this beautiful woman every week."

The beautiful woman (and she is) that Bono was referring to was partner Lacey Schwimmer.

Bono's hurt feelings weren't even the biggest controversy of the previous night. That had been the contretemps between Maksim Chmerkovskiy and judge Len Goodman. The professional had suggested the judge might wish to retire.

We saw a little private footage of all the judges agreeing that the performance of Chmerkovskiy and his partner Hope Solo had, indeed, been no better than Bono's. So what a shock that Solo was condemned to the status of jeopardized contestant again.

It didn't mean she was in the bottom two. It just meant that the producers are caring, sharing human beings.

When his demise was announced, Bono looked like he just wanted to get out as quickly as he could. However, when corralled by the presenters, he was deeply gracious.

"I wanted to show America a different kind of man," he said. "If there was someone like me on TV when I was growing up, my whole life would have been different."

Instead, all he had in his day were cowboys and cartoon characters. Like penguins.

Bono conducted himself with absolute grace throughout this competition. True, his personality will be missed a little more than his dancing. But there are several contestants remaining who, some might feel, will be missed for neither.

Some people in this country are so intolerant concerning different life styles due to not being educated. Someone mentioned "they don't know why she (Chaz) made that choice." Our sex preference is decided during the 4th month while still in the womb. It is not a choice. It is a struggle in life. Homosexuals have been bastardized for years.
During the last 30 years they have been taunted, brutally beaten, bullied, some eventually killing themselves. You think the people that mock or say the things that were said in the above comments are innocent in all this? Has anyone had friends that are GLBT? Does anyone know what a binary gender is. People educate yourself, open your mind, you might find a friend. As for the judges, call CBS, tell them you will not watch this show due to the cruelty of the judges. Christ, animals activists protect abused animals; but our fellow men /women are allowed to be abused by these tired out judges?
Spare me.

Too bad there are so many intolerant people on here. Chaz is a guy folks, whether YOU believe it or not. Chaz was fine but kept going due to popularity, nothing wrong with that. Kardashian is terrible and he is still on. Bruno was wrong in his comments on Chaz. He should have criticized his moves not his weight and looks. I appreciated Chaz attempts.

Iit is time for the Judges to be replaced. They can comment on the dancing aspect of the dancers, but to rudely insult any dancer is sick. Len needs to go--especially him.. The other two need to go also. Either that or dont have any more shows. They are cruel verbly. the audience should all get up and walk out when the judges get insulting...The producers should reprimand the judges and tell them to stop the insults..BY ALL MEANS THE JUDGES ARENT PERFECT EITHER.

So...I am having a slow day at work today and I had time to kill, so I read all these comments. Very interesting, I must say. To the people that overly critical of someone who had gender identity issues, shame on you. Are you perfect? I think not. NOBODY is perfect. I don't watch DWTS, but when I read that Chaz was going to be on, I did read some of the articles written about the show. Chaz and I are about the same age and I always thought how cute she was whenever she was on shows with Sonny and Cher. Kind of like the little girl on Bewitched. And I always wanted to be on TV like them. LOL Anyway, I digress. When I first read about Chastity changing into a guy, it kind of bothered me. But now, I applaud him for doing his own thing and making HIMSELF happy. We were not put on this earth to make other people happy. Bullies/judgemental idiots/closed-minded fools all need to back off of other human beings that have every right to do as they please without worrying about being judged by others who have no right to judge. Just sayin'.

Glad you exist to take up for the girls turned guys, all those with sexual disorders, the miscreants and deviants of the world, and the wholly misguided and mentally imbalanced. Someone has to do it. It appears you nominated yourself. I won't be doing it, but we need liberals like you to balance the boat I guess. Glad Bono (she) is gone. She ain't no he. I would compare male parts anyday. Maybe in frankensteins world...

I love how this comment is steeped in hypocrisy. Hey Kimmj, does judgementalism include calling people you disagree with "bullies, judgemental idiots, closed minded fools"? Are you judging others? Are you suggesting that you others do not "have the right to do as they please" without worrying about you judging them?

Grow up you disgusting hypocrite. Educated societies make judgements about behavior and actions. It's called being able to discern between right and wrong and if you either cannot do that or refuse to do it, then you are a danger to yourself and to the rest of society. As for Chastity or Chaz or whatever name SHE chooses to refer to herself, she is STILL a female and there is NOTHING that change that. No law, no medicine, no society, no propaganda can or will change DNA.

I agree that its time for Len to go. Actually Bruno and Carrie Ann should go also. The former 'fly girl' from in living color does not offer anything to the show and I can't understand half of what Bruno is saying. EVERY year Len says something cruel to a contestant and gets away with it. Its ironic that Carrie Ann was defending Bruno when just a few weeks tom had to separate the two of them because of their unprofessional conduct toward each other. The Pro Dancers are the stars, it is THEIR show. I want good dancing and entertainment not some old fuddy duddy and a fly girl telling me how it use to be in the old days - does Carrie Ann even know anything other than ' i saw a lift'. Please take Brooke too. Tom is Great!!!!

These judges already have their eyes set on two couple and that's Ricki Lake and JR. They are the judges' favorites, how can you tell?..when Ricki Lake messed up her choreography, all the judges said was "she shouldn't have added the bunny hop in their choreography". They told her in a gentle way, she did not get any name calling, and no ridiculing like they did Chaz and Hope Solo. Ricki had some dance exposure with "Hair spray" movie unlike the other two. These judges are supposedly professionals, their job is to point out what they did wrong or what they needed to improve, period. Their name calling and harsh criticism to these candidates who are adults, mind you, were definitely humiliating and degrading..I applaud Max and Lacey for standing up for themselves, like some people "I" would be afraid to comment or say anything while "still" on the show......

HerHubby says:
First, I do have compassion for Chaz(F/K/A Chastity). I don't know what caused Chaz to think that she is male and am sorry for her life circumstances which led her to that decision. I do wish her well in life and hope that someday she can go back to thinking of herself as the woman that she is. I think that she does have some talent, not to mention a lot of courage, and hopefully she can find some successful outlet for that talent in the future. Even so, right now, I don't think that dancing is her talent. Objectively speaking, had Chaz lost a lot of weight, not attempted to change her gender and come on Dancing with the Stars in good shape as a woman, she might have gotten further. That is one tough show that even puts a strain on the best professional athletes and those who come on that show (and I speak as one out of shape who would never try it even if I was in good shape) out of shape with little or no athletic experience of any kind, are likely to lose and be eliminated before the final round. Frankly, I am glad that Chaz got eliminated before she hurt her knees any further or damaged any other body parts. As has happened with other competitors in the past, she got eliminated because she just was not able to compete with the leaders on this seasons show. Yes, I think that Len and Bruno could and should be more polite to the competitors and certainly should have been to Chaz. Even so, I think that, basically, they gave her every chance, even had some kind words for her at time, and she probably stayed on there much longer than she should have. And let's not forget that all the stars dancing on that show get paid a nice chunk of money for doing so, no matter how long they stay on, so, Chaz should be crying all the way to the bank with the nice check she is getting for her efforts. No matter how long they stay on, those dancing competitors DO get paid a LOT of money for their efforts! And Chaz sure earned every penny of her money from them!
