Best Bets: Elizabeth Olsen movie, Noel Gallagher solo, 6th "Dexter" book
Sean Durkin's drama, which is making an instant star out of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's little sister Elizabeth, has been generating a lot of Oscar buzz.
Just in time for Halloween, we also get "Paranormal Activity 3," the latest in that scary-movie franchise. Also opening Friday are "Three Musketeers," starring Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Luke Evans, Matthew MacFadyen, and Ray Stevenson, and "Johnny English Reborn," the British spy spoof staring Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean) and Gillian Anderson.
On the small screen, "Once Upon a Time," an unusual new drama debuts Sunday night on ABC. Set in the fictional town of Storybrooke, the show serves up familiar fairy tales with modern twists.
DVD releases this week include a 40th anniversary collector's edition of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
Noel Gallagher, two years past the bitter Oasis breakup with brother Liam, is going solo with the release Monday of "High-Flying Birds."
Music lovers also can look forward to new albums Tuesday from Jane's Addiction ("The Great Escape Artist"), Chris Isaak ("Beyond the Sun"), and '60s songstress Judy Collins ("Bohemian").
Joan of Arc features in "The Maid," a novel by Kimberly Cutter and one of the books being published this week.
Also hitting store shelves is Jeff Lindsay's "Double Dexter," book number six in the series about a serial killer in the Miami Police Department on which the TV show "Dexter" is based.
Colson Whitehead, a genius grant recipient who has been shortlisted for a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book award, will debut "Zone One," a new novel in the horror genre. He is the author of four other novels and a book-length essay.
