(CBS) Alec Baldwin isn't showing up for tonight's Emmy Awards after a joke he made about News Corp. was cut from a segment recorded to open the ceremony.

On Thursday, Baldwin tweeted: "I did a short Emmy pretape a few days ago. Now they tell me NewsCorp may cut the funniest line."

On Sunday, he added, "Fox did kill my NewsCorp hacking joke. Which sucks bc I think it would have made them look better. A little."

According to the Daily News, the segment showed Baldwin talking on the phone, then calls out Rupert Murdoch for listening in on the conversation.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Baldwin, a nominee in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category for his role on "30 Rock," will not be attending the ceremony.

"I understand NewsCorp killing that joke," he tweeted on Sunday, adding, "If I were enmeshed in a scandal where I hacked phones of families of innocent crime victims purely 4 profit, I'd want that 2 go away, 2."

According to the Associated Press, Fox said it believed the joke was inappropriate to make light of an issue being taken very seriously by the company.

Baldwin has become such an unpleasant, swollen whiner. I never thought he would turn out to be such a pompous, arrogant prig. Reading his gaseous rants and witnessing his outrageous mood swings this past year, I've had more than my fill of his nasty mouth, and the distasteful manner in which he spits self-serving baloney out of both sides of the same.

Didn't Baldwin say he would leave the country if George Bush got re-elected?
Why is he still here?

Didn't Rush Limbaugh say he'd move to Costa Rica if the health care bill passed? Why is he still here?

Alec Baldlwin did the right thing to not attend these so called Awards...I for one, think they are stupid. All you see and hear are people pretending to be pretending that they are surprised....then the stupid things they say after being handed this so called award are just as stupid..I don't watch the Emmy's as we don't watch any of the so called popluar programs..PBS has the best network on TV followed by History Channel and Animal Planet. I am tired of the talking heads and we don't watch the people reading the news to us anymore either. TV for us is on a downhll run and until they get some decent programs on, we don't watch enough to even have cable TV. We want to watch a movie, we actually go to the movie theater....we do not wait for the DVD to come out on Netflixs or the Big Red Box outside the McDonalds. We like Alex Baldwin and we like the fact that he don't take crap from anyone...Good for you Mr. Baldwin. We need more people like you to tell the truth about what's really going on...
