"American Idol": As Haley Reinhart fumes, "Idol" shows its skirts

Haley Reinhart performs after she is eliminated on "American Idol," May 19, 2011.

/ FOX

(CBS) Here's the most exciting part of last night's "American Idol" results show: Jennifer Lopez wore some very fetching shorts.

Here's the second most exciting part: Haley Reinhart was madder than a vicar at an atheist's stripper joint at being told that she would not be in the final.

Pictures: "American Idol" Season 10
Special section: "American Idol"

Viewers knew from the beginning of the show that Reinhart would be the one to go. The departure of Lauren Alaina and, especially, Scotty McCreery would have deserved the word "shock".

This word did not emerge from Ryan Seacrest's never-puckered lips, as he tried to overexcite the baying masses.

If it had, we might have enjoyed a little natural tension. Instead, we had a long ad for a new J.J. Abrams movie called "Super 8". However, one of the stars of this movie, Elle Fanning, inadvertently revealed the true reality of what this most famous of reality shows has become.

She explained that her cousin had picked her favorite from the very beginning. Her cousin's favorite is Scotty McCreery. Her cousin is 6 years old.

As the years have gone on, more 6-year-olds have enjoyed the pleasures of cell phones and laptops. Which means that more 6-year-olds are capable of sitting there and voting 20 times for pretty boys with smiles, even if they really look a touch like George W. Bush and sing not so much like George Strait.

Before the decision - based supposedly on 95 million votes (from 5 million 6-year-olds?) - was announced, we had to endure emotive footage from the three contestants' hometown visits.

We learned that not too many people seemed to turn out for Haley Reinhart. We learned that Scotty McCreery doesn't have a bed big enough for groupies. We learned that Lauren Alaina can pitch a ball well over the catcher's head.

The subject of the results reared its ugly head in the 49th minute of the show. Immediately, Seacrest announced that he would announce the results after the break.

Naturally, as soon as a little more product had been sold, McCreery was told he would be exciting children for yet another week. It was highly noticeable how much less warmly he hugged Reinhart than he hugged Alaina.

Then Alaina herself was told it would, indeed, be an all-country final.

Reinhart's face was a picture of unadulterated, unedited, unmitigated anger. She couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe that "American Idol" represented such a limited view not only of idolatry, but of America.

It looked as if, had she been in possession of a long, sharp object, she would have happily used to it skewer those she felt to be responsible. She recovered her composure a few seconds later in order to deliver the appropriate platitudes.

However, she also managed to deliver a rendition of "Benny and the Jets" that was far too adult, far too sophisticated, far too contemporary for a show that has come to represent little more than the rump of American music.

The final will be between two teens - Alaina and McCreery. The former is a genuinely talented - and genuine - singer. The latter is a one-boy boy band who will likely contribute little or nothing to the annals of music.

Surely now there will be many - especially those with a sense of taste and humor - who will be looking forward to the return of Simon Cowell and the rather more critical eye he will no doubt offer in his new show, "The X Factor."

One can only imagine what he might have made of McCreery.

Well, everyone get's to have an opinion, even the sometimes lame judges.
My take, is Haley has what is takes to be huge. And, if given the chance, I'll vote with my dollars when I buy her CDs and go to her shows.
I just love, love, love her style, sultry (even lusty) voice, and her cool, cool, jazzy feel. When she sings and moves on the stage, it takes me to magical places. For me, she has a vibe that's just so **** right for today.
As for Scotty, i think he's a talented young man, but his old school country style has been done by so many, so very well, before him. I'm just not sure if he can differentiate himself or not yet. But, at least for now, he's breaking the hearts of 10 to 25 year girls everywhere. And for now, I'd guess that'll carry him just fine.

Now as for Lauren, she's just cute, cute, cute, with really good, but simply not great, pipes. Just today I listened to 5 of her songs my 15 yr old daughter downloaded. Maybe she'll develop more over time, but for me, for today, she's just simply forgettable, with little style and without a 'sound' to call her own.

It's rare, but sometimes you meet someone and can tell within the first few minutes of hanging out that they have something special. That's how people described Wheeling, Illinois, native Haley Reinhart in her run-up to Thursday night's final "American Idol" season 10 elimination show.

Nonetheless, her supporters say she's one of those rare talents who shine through without being showy, and are confident she'll make the most of her time in the spotlight.

"She's done Wheeling proud and she's done more in a matter of months than most people do in their lives," said JT Teichert, who played alongside Haley in the Wheeling High School jazz band.

Brian Logan, the director of bands at that institution, said he had never even heard of Reinhart until the singer turned in a CD for the school's annual music competition during her sophomore year. On Friday morning (May 20), he described a similar reaction to Reinhart's own shell-shocked look when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results.

"Like Haley, for about three seconds we were, like, 'Wow, really?' " he said. "But we're just thrilled for her because she got some incredible exposure and people around the world know something we've known for some time - that we've got an incredible talent from Wheeling."

Earlier in the week, Logan recalled the first time he heard Haley sing, and how he was as blown away then as he was with her performances on the show.

"Her tape came across my desk and it was her dad playing guitar and she was singing," he said of the father-daughter duo, who had already been performing together for years along with Haley's mom in the elder Reinharts' group, Midnight, and who reprised their onstage chemistry on Wednesday night's "Idol" performance show. "It was a jazz standard and I was impressed with the guitar playing, but then she started singing and she had this sultry voice that said, 'I've been doing this a long time.' I thought, 'I'm listening to a veteran, not some kid. Who is this?' "

Logan tracked Reinhart down a few days later and he invited her to sing with the school's well-regarded jazz band, which, he noted, doesn't always have a singer unless there happens to be a very decent one in the school who can handle the gig.

But when she came back after a few days with the sheet music all crumpled up into a ball, he was wary, and before handing her the microphone he asked Haley to stand next to him and sing a bit with the band without amplifying her voice. "She sang for about eight seconds and I stopped the band, told her to grab the microphone and said, 'Let's do this for real,' " he explained. "She didn't have any music in front of her and she sang as well the first time as she did the last time."

And so Reinhart became an integral part of the band, playing at a big Midwestern competition and accompanying the group to the venerable Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 2009.

Logan wasn't surprised that Reinhart held it together when the bad news of her "Idol" elimination hit. "If she had broken down and started crying I would have been surprised," he said. "Because that's not who she is. She just loves to sing ... I think her fan base is huge right now and I would be surprised if she doesn't have a very successful career."

That humble, music-focused nature is the same one Reinhart brought with her to university in the fall of 2009, when she enrolled at Harper College in nearby Palatine, Illinois, to study jazz. She hooked up with the jazz ensemble and jazz band and, Ken Spurr, director of jazz studies at the school said in the three semesters Haley was with his program (before she made it to "Idol" on her second try and dropped out), he was really impressed with her chops.

Whether it was in the jazz history or jazz piano class, Spurr said he immediately sensed an ability in Haley to "move her voice around wherever she wants and to absorb anything you tell her." She proved those chops on Wednesday night, segueing from a rocking Led Zeppelin tune to a sedate Fleetwood Mac classic to Alanis Morissette's angst-filled "You Oughta Know."

Though he was a bit surprised that Reinhart tried out for "Idol," Spurr said he'd already gotten an early preview of what she was capable of when she sang the standard "Moanin' " in jazz lab - a tune she reprised on "Idol" with fellow ousted finalist Casey Abrams. "That was a great moment as a teacher," he said. "She did it a bit faster than we did, but she did a good job."

Like Logan, Spurr was a bit taken aback at Thursday's result after assuming that Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina would cancel each other out and leave a spot for Haley. "I think she's well on her way after the dust settles," he added. "I'm looking forward to watching what she does in the future ... It's rare to have that tremendous desire and that gift. But I also know that if she can sing and play with good musicians...

It wasn't the fact that Haley fell during her performance that resulted in her being voted off; she wasn't as popular as Lauren and Scotty, and people also reacted strongly to her nasty attitude! There are some old-fashioned opinions in America, even during these modern times, regarding manners and public behavior. Really famous celebrities have been bashed and boycotted for the exact same thing! I agree with the majority: Haley will fade away, except to a very small group of supporters, and won't remain in the limelight, especially for her singing talent, which is almost non-existent. She is a total league behind Lauren, who has more natural talent (at only 16)than Haley will ever have.
Scotty, also, who is only 16 years old, has a huge career ahead of him. He and Lauren have not even reached their full potential yet. You will see them in the very near future, on country music awards shows, receiving honors!

Swampdaisy...... You seem to be the one lacking a good attitude, are you always so critical of others? even strangers you do not know? IMHO You seem obsessed with bad mouthing the contestants that you dislike for your own personal reasons. For all your talk of manners and behavior you seem to be lacking in both. But by my own standards I am willing to give you the benifit of the doubt being I do NOT know you. I will tell you...Get over it!! Your two favorites are in the finals. You should have the good MANNERS and be gracious enough to wish for the best for those that lost.

We should all wish for the best for the entertainers that had the moxie to get on the American Idol stage. Not one of us has a crystal ball to predict future sales or careers certainly you do not. J-Lo, Jimmy, and several other mentors (EVEN LAUREN) that know what they are talking about when it comes to music had high opinions of Haleys voice and delivery. You should remember that not everyone is a Country Music fan, If you only like country you may not be the best to judge Jazz or Rock . Even then if you are a country music fan would like Haley's Blue in fact many country fans are downloading it.

It is certainly country and has sold better than any of Laurens I-Tunes and better than all but one of Scotty's. If that's not enough you should read what Lauren had to say about Haley's voice and rember you can not judge a person by viewing them for a few seconds out of their life. I seriously doubt that any of us would come off golden by that standard.

I think we should all respect Lauren for being more of an adult than some posting here. Swampdaisy you should try to be more like your IDOL Lauren. Instead of bad mouthing Haley all over the INTERNET you should cut and paste what Lauren said then you wouldn't embarrass yourself over and over again.

LAUREN SAID....
Haley wasn't the only one who was less than thrilled with the judges' criticisms, either. "I wasn't a happy camper about that," said Lauren Alaina, who was seated with Haley and fellow contestants Scotty McCreery and James Durbin. "That made me a little ill. Because Haley" - she turned to Scotty and James - "I'm sorry guys, but Haley has the best voice on this show, and she gets the most criticism. It's just, like, I deserve a lot more criticism than she does." At this point, Haley began to redden: "Oh wow. You're very sweet." Lauren wasn't done, either. "I'm Haley's number one fan," she continued. "I listen to her iTunes songs over and over and over again." Finally, Haley'd had enough, her face disappearing into her hands: "Stop! You're making me blush! You are really cute, thank you. That was really, really, really sweet."

You are absolutely correct in your assessment that Haley did not win because of her perceived attitude. You are wrong though in your assessment of her attitude and who will have the biggest career. Your girl Lauren: "Haley has the best voice on this show and she gets the most criticism. I deserve a lot more criticism than she does. I'm Haley's No. 1 fan. I listen to her iTunes songs over and over and over."

Who ever wrote the article with a header "Haley Fumes" is an Idiot not a mind reader. Haley is a strong confidant women she looked like anyone would that just lost something that meant something to them. If any of you watch any type of sports competition or better yet if you have competed in any completion you know exactly what the look meant and how she felt.

Haley wants to win as we all do but she took her defeat graciously, and with more courage than the eliminated men have shown. So seriously unless you have been in her shoes in completion quit the lame attempt at mind reading, another tip instead of dreaming up something about the young lady look up her Bio. on Wikipedia you will find she is quite accomplished.

About the standing and who will sell music time will tell but for now take this into consideration.

I was a Haley fan all the way. The kids are alright, but think they are just a bit dull... sort of one note wonders.
Unsilent Majority - yes everyone sticks to a genre, but it's great if they have some cross-over appeal... Scotty has none. He is straight country and if he gets play at all it will only be on country radio.. he will never be on AC or Hot AC which is what has made the really successful; ie Taylor Swift, Lady A, Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood, Sugarland and more really successful... he will never have that.

On another note was at a taping of The X Factor here in Chicago tonight... it was so good to see Simon and Paula together... I think it's going to be really good!! There were a couple really good folks they put thru. And the "judges" actaully judged... everyone wasn't just "beautiful". I look forward to it when it airs in the fall.

Alot of fans are riled up over the selections. Ryan always says, "After the nation voted..." but doesn't indicate that the votes really matter. I believe the producers have a big hand in who goes forward. The best and most saleable contestants end up second or third (or fourth in the cases of Daughtry or Jennifer Hudson) They are free to contract out and frankly Adam Lambert was alot better off not winning and probably made alot more money for himself and the producers not being owned by AI. Who won that year? Chris Allen? Who's he? Would you plan your Saturday evening around going to see Chris Allen, or Lee Dewyze? or Taylor Hicks? But people would pay scalper prices to see Adam. Scotty is the most commercially sale-able which is why he'll come in second to Lauren who will win. Follow the money.
