(CBS) Nate Dogg, one of the most recognizable and smooth voices in rap and R & B, has died. He was 41.

Born Nathaniel Hale, Nate Dogg suffered from ill health for years. His death was first reported in the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

The cause of death is not immediately known, though the Press-Telegram reports that he suffered two strokes, one in 2007 and another in 2008. TMZ reports it's confirmed Nate Dogg's death.

The hook singer first came to national attention on Dr. Dre's 1992 masterpiece "The Chronic." Nate earned the first of four Grammy nominations in 1995 for "Regulate," a collaboration with Warren G. His fourth and most recent nomination came for Eminem's "Shake That" in 2007.

Since the news broke of Nate Dogg's death, his friends and collaborators have sent messages out about him. "We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb. One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met," tweeted Snoop Dogg, who continued on for several tweets before concluding, "RIP NATE DOGG."

On Twitter, "Nate Dogg" quickly became a trend.

Nate Dogg released several solo albums, including a self-titled effort in 2008.

d3arryl, you actually werent hard at all and coulda made me feel real outa line and look like one of the wannabe's I was talkin about earlier. I know some people, old friends who woulda had a field day with me callin me old and delusional touched with Alzheimers, etc. You were cool correcting me your way. You could be a school teacher with that cool but real constructive critisizm or correction attitude & method, LOL. I looked up some info on the WWW after my last reply to you and was really surprised at how many new Sets claim to be in So. Cal. that I have never heard of. Feels like I am way over due for a visit back home and God knows I am homesick. It's all Good. Appriciate ya.

Now, ok, I'm not above being incorrect and admitting my wrongs, but when I left LA (a very long time ago, 1992)the 20's were ssssssssbloods. I know after the truce many neighborhoods squashed some of the drama, so question?? Anything is possible. When I moved to a little podunk town in Pennsylvania there actually were a group of Brothers, never even seen LA except on B.E.T. calling themselves Rollin 60's, so I've seen alot of...I'll call it growth over the years, since I moved from LA. Hell, in Texas there's more Rollin 60's, 20's, Eight Tre's I mean sometimes I forget I'm not in LA, and they have all kinds of I'll call them really light complected people claiming their loyalty to "their" Set. I remember when a little "light" boy wouldn't dare to skateboard through the Neighborhoods. My point I guess is there's been alot of changes, I'm no expert on Famous Rapper Sets, I wont claim to be either, I'm just sayin back in the day 30 years ago, 20's were bloods and we never heard of half these Sets they have now and I will eat my crow and apologize for being old and incorrect. Back when I was Home Yellow was worn in San Diego not Long Beach. Too much to keep track of now. I don't want to insult anybody so "Roger & Out". I gotta say though some of these newer neighborhoods and creating and claiming Sets across the country representing an OG LA Ganster territory makes me sick, sounds stupid and shouldn't be happening. It feels like Vanilla Ice all over again, faken the funk, and prpetrtng a fraud, having these sidewalk slick country boys represent LA and have never protected or lived on her streets, it's wrong. But I must say now My old ass has been corrected and hushed & I feel stupid, kinda like the Fake wannabe's should feel but worse cause LA was my home for 28 out of my 39 years and I spoke way outa line. I stand corrected and hushed. Sorry

OMG! LMAO!!!
@ hoofhearted0- "Rollin 20 Crips"?? Really?? Do u really know that much about L.A. gangs or is it you know Nada about Nathaniel Hale, to actually accuse or maybe purposely insult him by calling him a Rollin 20 "Crip"?? OMG, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. BTW, I think you meant Rollin 60 Crip, 20's are the other color. Drugs use WILL catch up to everyone at some point and body slam y'all to Your Rock Bottom, either Family, Job, Home, Health and possibly all of the above all at the same time. He was only 41 when he Died!!! He was 37 when he had his FIRST stroke. He had a great chance for a full recovery after that one & then he relapsed & had a 2nd stroke in 2008. That one was his "Rock Bottom". So much talent. So Handsome. What a loss that should've & could've been prevented. So much Love Nate!! XXXX

RIP Nate Dogg. Peace to your friends and family. Many good memories listening to "Regulate" back in the day.

Let's not speculate about his health issues. I have congestive heart failure like he did at a young age, no drug usage involved. I wouldn't have ever guessed that it would happen to me, I was in very good shape, or so I thought.
