Kate Middleton's Engagement Ring is Princess Diana's

Prince William used his late mother, Princess Diana's dazzling oval blue 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring when he popped the question to longtime girlfriend, Kate Middleton on holiday in Kenya last month.

NEW YORK (CBS) When Prince William proposed to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton on holiday in Kenya last month, his late mother, the beloved Princess Diana played a role -- she provided the ring.

Prince William proposed to Middleton using the18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring that belonged to his mother.

So what does the famous ring look like?

It's a dazzling oval, 18-carat blue sapphire and white diamond ring. Diana, who died in 1997, chose the elegant cluster ring after becoming engaged to Charles in 1981.

"This was my way of making sure that my mother didn't miss out on today," William said as the couple posed for photographers in the state apartments at St. James' Palace.

According to royal watcher and CBS News contributor Neil Sean, William holds his mother up like an icon but admits that "I just want to make sure I keep her memory alive and all the good things and good work that she did."

Prince William did his proposing the right way- he asked Kate's father for his daughter's hand before proposing to her. And he admitted to being nervous about popping the question. "I was not sure she would say yes, " he said. "How could I be ? "

Beautiful! Love the trend in conflict free gemstone engagement rings and wedding bands, rather than an unethical diamond: http://www.brilliantearth.com/rings/wedding-anniversary/sapphire-wedding-bands/

Kate Middleton is amazing and has brought new life to the Royal Family. She is exactly what the UK need right now. Her blue sapphire a used engagement ring is stunning. It's great that it was passed down from Princess Diana. I bought a preowned engagement ring from Have You Seen the Ring, but its nowhere near as nice as Kates!

Fist of all, Lady Diana chose her ring herself, from a tray brought to the palace by Garrards jewelers who used to be the official royal jewelers.
She said she chose it because it was ?the biggest?
Secondly, the sapphire was between 7 and 9 carats. NOT 18 ct the ring it?s self was ?18 kt white gold? . That is where everyone seems to be confused and continuously say the sapphire is 18cts, when in fact it was the white gold that was 18kt .

Steve Voynick on page 163 of the 1995 edition of his book Yogo: The Great American Sapphire gives the weight of the stone as 9 carats.

If you must, then measure it?that stone with refernance to say, lady Diana?s eye?just the coloured part of her eyes, her iris will of course measure 12mm in diameter, and in the same photos where they show her ring, you?ll notice the sapphire is no more then the size of her iris. go ahead measure it! this sapphire being only 12mm in length and even less in width, would therefore have to be at least 20 or more deep for it to be 18cts! of course it is not, it would have never fit in the ring! it?s about 7 to 9 carats at MOST!

Congratulations to William and Kate.
I found it very touching that William gave Kate his mother's engagement ring.
It was a true declaration of how much he loved and admired his mother and misses her still.

Not too sure about the union. However, the silly thing is that people continue to get the specs of the ring wrong! You'd figure that after all of this time that people could at least get it right. The ring is an 18kt white gold sapphire and diamond ring from garrards 1981 Christmas catalogue. NOT an 18 carat sapphire! Unbelievable that they STILL can't get that right! This sapphire is approx. 7 to 9 carats. Never ever anywhere do you find specs from the creators of the ring, garrards, ever saying it is an 18 carat sapphire! silly really. all you really have to do to prove this point is to have a look at any 7 to 9 carat sapphire ring, there are many out there, and see for yourself the size. any 18 carat sapphire would in fact be at least twice that size and closer to the size of the sapphire diana wore in her famous choker!

I hope she doesn't wear Diana's wedding gown! That thing was ugly! Diana herself was beautiful but her gown was the ugliest thing I've ever seen! It looked like it was made from draperies and it had these gigantic puffy sleeves that were so big they were downright hideous! Diana's engagement ring, though, is absolutely gorgeous!

However, at this point in time it is no longer Diana's engagement ring--it is Kate's engagement ring. I hope she doesn't have to "fight" for her identity during this wedding. It's all about Kate--not Diana.

It?s time to meet Kate Middleton, the wife of the future heir to the throne of England.

If not the first commoner, who is Ms Middleton who given the spate of recent trauma the royal family has experienced in later years must surely be a sight of delight for sore eyes?
