LAS VEGAS (CBS/AP) Paris Hilton pleaded guilty Monday to two misdemeanor charges stemming from her arrest for drug possession last month at a Las Vegas hotel-casino.

She will serve a year of probation and avoid a felony charge under the terms of a plea deal worked out with prosecutors after the 29-year-old heiress pleaded guilty Monday to drug possession and obstructing an officer.

Hilton must complete a drug abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service.

She faces a year in jail if she violates the probation and is arrested for anything other than a minor traffic violation.

Hilton was arrested Aug. 26 inside the Wynn resort, after police say a small plastic bag containing 0.8 of a gram of cocaine spilled out of her purse.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which obtained a copy of the plea deal, the obstructing charge was added because Hilton lied to police when she said the Chanel bag wasn't hers. Hilton told police the purse and the cocaine belonged to someone else, though other items in it - $1,300 in cash, credit cards, cigarette rolling papers and a prescription pill to treat asthma - belonged to her. Hilton also said she thought the cocaine was gum, according to her arrest report.

Why does everyone believe JAIL time is the answer. When you have money like Paris and others making them donate an obsence amount of there trust funds to a better cause it the only thing that makes them lift there nose from the shine glass mirror. Since daddy is to wimpy to do it himself.

What is Your Legacy Paris? What will you be remembered for when it comes to an end. Do you want to be remembered as "Sarah" from the bible, Maralyn Monroe who OD'ed, Betty Ford Clinic, or just maybe you can leave behind a real legacy to your name. Build an outreach for children, create an adoption place for endangered species that you like, or just maybe you will come up with something that truly tells us who you? Yet you are affraid to be in the sight of humans. I haven't found anything in anyone whom does drugs to be worthy of recognition and living on a name is not living at all. What will be your LEGACY- Paris????

she doesn't need to do anything to satisfy whatever your standard is for someone ... and what you believe is 'worthy'. all she has to do is feel good about herself and the choices she makes.

One year jail time is pretty harsh for a victimless personal possession of a small amount of coke.
But believe me, 200 hours community service in Clark County is almost "hard time".
For a party city built on allowing what others call illegal (gambling, prostitution) a simple confiscation, probation and fine to support the policemen's ball would be fair.

So, in other words... you're a drug user yourself. Why else would you advocate a lessor sentence for possession of an illegal narcotic? Nice try though.

[ Why else would you advocate a lessor sentence for possession of an illegal narcotic? ]

because the laws in place for so called 'illegal narcotics' are absurd ... and not appropriate for the infraction. when the penalties for something are worse than the result of the action that the penalties are for ... there's an issue w/ the penalties.

why would you believe that just because something has been deemed illegal ... that it's actually grounded in rational and congnitive assessment relative to the problems it allegedly creates?

Star or not, a slap on the wrist will only encourage further misconduct. Lock her up and throw away the key as far as I'm concerned.

Average people wouldn't have gotten such consideration and that fact makes this a miscarriage of justice as far as I'm concerned.

It ain't no joke when you are talking about a year in jail. This is Nevada...not California. You do the full year if you screw up. You complete the rehab course and pass all of the drug tests...or you do the full year. You don't get busted for anything else while you are on probation...or you do the full year.

no it's not ... they were both well known long before they ended up on the wrong side of the law.
