NEW YORK (CBS) Bill Murray got a bump on his head in the name of comedy during a "dumpster dive" on the "Late Show," but was it painful enough to skip out on his film screening?

The famed "Get Low" comedian was a no-show for a Cinema Society screening of his new movie Wednesday, reportedly because of head injuries sustained from an outdoor "dumpster dive" goof on "Late Show with David Letterman."

In a July 21 taping, a fully-clothed Bill Murray jumped twice from a platform fixed to a truck-sized street dumpster filled with water outside the Ed Sullivan Theater.

"I just know it's going to be cold, Dave!" Murray screams to Letterman, moments before the goof.

Murray shouted "Lou Pinella" before diving head first in a pool of garbage, hat, shoes and all. The comedian even splashed some of the junky water towards the crowd and traffic-jammed cars.

Afterward, Letterman laughingly says to Murray, "Come on in, Bill. We'll get you a Hepatitis shot."

No reports have surfaced of the funnyman needing hospitalization after the staged stunt. But the New York Daily News reported that there is speculation that Murray nicked his head on a ladder that was mounted on the side of the Dumpster.

The newspaper reports that Murray cited  his head injury as the reason he missed a screening and party for his new film with co-stars Sissy Spacek and Robert Duvall. However, a source who saw the taping told the New York Daily News that Murray did not seem concerned about the cut. Indeed, during a commercial break, a makeup artist tended to the wound, and neither Murray nor Letterman mentioned it during the three segments that were taped.

I am only concerned that there has been no update on his condition. He must have been hurt more badly than people thought, because he missed a movie premiere the next day.

I'm going to apologize for my previous statements. I rewatched the video, he seemed ok, so I probably over-reacted (yep, I'm the emotional type and talk before I think). I said waaaaaayyyy too much. I apologize to everyone, reserving that I still think this guy should have been in an ER. I'll never meet Bill Murray, and that's ok with me. Still the same, I wish him all the best. What's that Spock said? Live long and prosper?

I know that you're saying you wish he were sensitive to how "his fans" feel, but I thought you should know the way you posted it made it sound like you wish he would appreciate how you feel. I get your point, though. Keep in mind though, this isn't his fault. If anything else, it's Letterman's for lack of sound judgement. I totally agree, Bill Murray should have been sitting in an emergency room, not on a stage making jokes. If he refused to go to the hospital, then Letterman could have refused to interiew him.

Here?s what bothers me about this. When Bill Murray was being interviewed by Letterman, he was sitting there in a state that suggested he was obviously not himself. He made good sense for much of the time, but his voice was off, he sounded tired, he kept rubbing his eyes (double vision?) and at the end, just looks with a confused expression at Letterman to say ?uh??, and that?s where Letterman cuts it off. Many of the symptoms Murray was showing in that chair are of a concussion, or even a TBI. In any case, head injuries are potentially life theatning, and Murray had no business sitting in that chair. Shame on Letterman and for his staff for letting him do that, instead of sending him strait to a hospital. Anybody remember Natasha Richardson, and how she died? I?m furious over this, and even more so because I know that because Murray doesn?t have an agent, people probably won?t know how Murray?s doing unless he just shows up in public somewhere. Why didn?t Letterman give an update on Bill last night? For the same reason he didn?t even mention Bill?s head in the bloody interview (pun intended)? I think that?s just plain insensitive. Bill Murray is one of the actors who I grew up watching. He has fans out there. Some of them honestly and sincerely believe they love him. I?m one of them. Not romantically no but like a member of my family, somehow. I wish Murray were more sensitive and considerate of that fact. Maybe things shouldn?t be that way, but the fact is it is so and to not be mindful of the feelings of others is both prideful and heartless. His fans will probably not know if he?s in the hospital. He could be laying unconscious, comatose or even brain-dead in an ICU somewhere, and people will probably not know about it, so all people like me can do, is just to sit here and pray?hoping that God in His grace will allow circumstances to update on his hopeful wellbeing to soothe a saddened heart. Bill, I know you read the Huffington Post. If you?re reading this, I?d really appreciate it, if you?d just have Letterman update everyone so your fans know you?re okay. Get well, soon. Last year, it was the knee, this time it?s the head. Try to stay away from crazy stunts for a while.
