TMZ reports that the reality TV star filed the papers at a courthouse in Santa Monica, Calif., on Tuesday, listing irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
However, Montag did not file divorce papers. Legal separation, the report states, means that her earnings will become her separate property, beginning on the date of separation, which she listed as June 8.
The news comes a week after Montag confirmed she moved out of the couple's home in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"I needed some alone time," Montag said at the time. "There are so many lies out there about me and I just needed space - even away from my husband."
"I had to get away from the lies my family and supposed friends are saying about me," she added. "It's time to concentrate on myself."
However, Montag's "The Hills" co-stars were skeptical about the breakup.
"I think it's a joke," Audrina Patridge told People magazine at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards in Los Angeles. "I don't believe it. They're inseparable and in love."
Whitney Port agreed, saying, "I doubt they're really broken up. I'm sure they're still sticking together."
