Mexico responds to CBS News investigation

Last night our CBS News investigation reported on ATF's Project Gunrunner and allegations that it included a secret operation near the border that intentionally allowed thousands of assault rifles and other weapons to hit the streets.

Sources told us many of the weapons ended up in the hands of Mexico's drug cartels. Two AK-47 type assault rifles turned up at the murder of border patrol agent Brian Terry on December 14th.

Sources also told us that ATF agents operating in Mexico were instructed not to alert Mexican authorities about the operation.

The Mexican government responded today. Ricardo Alday, spokesman for the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C. said Mexico intends to continue to work with the U.S. to enhance intelligence and information sharing, and that Mexico "will continue to encourage more aggressive interdiction efforts on the U.S. side of the border."

It is a shame what happened to those USA teenagers in Ciudad Juarez and I can believe no one has been arrested yet!! Please it will be appreciated if any updates in this news is posted. Thanks!

by CarloCaraluzzo March 8, 2011 8:53 AM EST: Wow, so the 35,000 Mexican citizens who have died in this "drug war" to STOP your pampered teenagers from using drugs means nothing to you? Just ONE US citizen is worth more than 35,000 Mexican citizen? And since Terry was killed we find out that the guns that killed him were actually send gift wrapped in some unsuspecting ICE agents bodies from the BATF?
But its a shame what happened to those USA teenagers?
Head back into the sand, buddy. Its safer there.

I see the update and hope that you will continue to follow this story and help keep America posted and interested . This is a big story that has slipped under the radar of news coverage too long.

What they are interested in is getting Money for programs that will allegedly stop trafficking. Why would they intervene if success (as in stopping the smuggling) would mean less money from America??

by uwe_meller February 24, 2011 6:08 PM EST: On September 10, 2010, my wife and I crossed the Mexican border from the USA at Nogales AZ to Nogales MX. The American border agents were extremely alert; checking our documents; having a sniffer dog; checking the undercarriage of the car with mirrors and visually checking the interior of the car. They also gave us a thorough visual check. On the Mexican side, they checked our passports and nothing else. I decided not to get a visitor's visa to see if I could get away with it (my wife has dual citizenship.) No problem; no visa; no check, visual or otherwise. If Mexico is really serious about stopping gun-running, wouldn't it make sense to check people crossing the border?; Reply to this comment
