Obama: U.S. Stands Ready to Help Haiti

Last updated 8:44 p.m. ET

President Barack Obama said his thoughts and prayers were with the people of Haiti, where a strong earthquake hit on Tuesday, and the United States stands ready to help the island nation.

White House officials said Mr. Obama also had asked aides to ensure personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince were safe. There are fewer than 20 U.S. military personnel in Haiti, largely working with the embassy there.

Officials also said Mr. Obama told them to start preparing in case humanitarian assistance was needed.

The State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development and U.S. Southern Command have started coordination.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said from Honolulu that the United States was gathering information about the quake and its impact, and the government was offering full civilian and military assistance to Haiti.

Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign
Affairs Western Hemisphere subcommittee, said: "This is the worst
possible time for a natural disaster in Haiti, a country which is
still recovering from the devastating storms of just over a year
ago."

Engel urged the administration "to do everything possible to
help" the Haitian people recover.

In Washington, department spokesman Gordon Duguid said the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince was accounting for staff and trying to activate the U.S. citizen warden network but said land lines and cell phone communication were down in the capital.

"Our embassy is also trying to make contact with the Haitian government. There are emergency meetings going on right now in Washington to identify assets that can be moved quickly into the area. U.S. search and rescue teams have been put on alert, and we are trying to assess the status of the airport. As President Obama has said, we will assist in any way we can."

"There are emergency meetings going on right now," State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said. "We need to gather what information we can quickly. We will of course assist in any way we can."

Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere subcommittee, said, "This is the worst possible time for a natural disaster in Haiti, a country which is still recovering from the devastating storms of just over a year ago."

Engel urged the administration "to do everything possible to help" the Haitian people recover.

Former President Bill Clinton, the U.N. special envoy for Haiti, said his office and the rest of the United Nations system were monitoring the situation. He pledged relief, rebuilding and recovery assistance to Haiti.

OBAMA HAS ALREAD SET A PRESIDENT FOR US TO FOLLOW AS FAR AS DONATING TO HAITI. HE AND HIS WIFE HAS PLEDGED $15,000. TO HELP.

IF WE WERE TO FOLLOW HIS 'EXAMPLE', THAT WOULD MEAN WE WOULD ONLY NEED TO PLEDGE .001% OF OUR ANNUAL INCOME.

COME ON!! 15,000.?? SHE SPENDS MORE A MONTH ON HER HAIR!! TRUE FACT, BY THE WAY.

Common decency might demand that WE, as individuals do something... there is no allowance for such aid in the United States Constitution. Now... you might be one of those folks who think the Constitution doesn't really apply anymore... in that case....

During the Clinton admin., Bill gave the commie dictator of Haiti $2 billion in aid. Some months later Federal auditors checking to find out how the money was spent could find no trace of it. Following a few days of hoopla from our politicians, the issue fell off the radar screen never to be heard about again. Until an accounting of what happened to the $2 billion is made public, Haiti will not get a donation from me and I will work to inform people within my large circle to do the same.

Haiti just endured a magnitude 7 earthquake followed by a series of 33 aftershocks up to 5.0 magnitude - what relevance does your point from 10+ years ago have to do with what's happening right now?

I have no problem in helping the people of Haiti recover from this diseaster,as American's we have always done. However I do have a problem that it only took Obama a couple of hours to come out and express our thoughts & prayers, yet it took the better part of 3 days to say anything about the underware bomber. Instead he let his stooges come out and show their stupidity,so he was forced into coming out and saying something, even tho his initial staements were wrong. This whole joke of an administration is CLUELESS and doesn't know what the hell to do for the people, instead its trying to do something to the people to futher their socialists agenda.

I was lied to growing up..I was taught America is the greatest nation on earth..I was told I never see homelessness..I do everyday on the streets..I have been there..I was told so much that very little is true..I was born blind with other handicaps..I am applled that we can't help America first and then others. Most nations only want America's money..Does that money really help the people in the nations we the people send it to or their govts.I see on TV ads asking others to help the hungry children..There are children and seniors going to bed with no food.. yep right here..I thank the cops for saving me as as at 9 I almost died..I was not given food as they felt a blind child was evil and the basics were not there for me...I am 55..Maybe America can teach them to grow their food, build their buildings so they will have pride in themselves..I think that is the answer. Teach them to read and write..We can give them things such as food and the basics..If they don't know how to use the aide--it meaningless. sure they need help in their hour of need..I have lost every thing..I taught myself to use the computer that was given me..With easy to red books.. Somone brought up that awful..I was appalled..There was a lady in her 90s begging help for everyone on national TV. She died as she was off her medications..She thought of others. The reporter covered her body..The appalling was the habdicapped not getting the help..

If Obama sees to this right it could really help him with the peeps. This is one of the few times I want to see my taxes sent overseas. Also would be a win/win if he funded American Crews to go and start repairs with American lumber and American steel.
