Neurosurgeon reacts to Republican praise after speech goes viral

Dr. Ben Carson talks to WJZ-TV

Dr. Ben Carson talks to WJZ-TV / CBS Baltimore

Dr. Ben Carson was already a world-renowned doctor when he was invited to speak at a Washington, D.C. panel a week ago. But he was launched into the political spotlight -- and perked the ears of conservatives -- when he spoke out against President Obama's health care and economic policies with the president just feet away.

In an exclusive interview with CBS Baltimore WJZ, the neurosurgeon responded to speculation about his political future and what he plans on doing when he retires from Johns Hopkins in four months.

Although Republicans have expressed a lot of support, Carson said he doesn't align himself with a political party.

"I call myself a logical person," Carson told WJZ-TV's Adam May. "I happen to be an independent -- registered as an independent -- but anything I talk about or advocate, I would challenge anybody to show me where it's not logical."

"If Democrats happen to agree with what I'm talking about, great. If Republicans happen to be the ones who agree with what I'm talking about, great," Carson added.

Carson spoke earlier this month at the National Prayer Breakfast, an annual event hosted by members of Congress and the conservative Christian organization The Fellowship Foundation. In a charismatic, 22-minute speech, he lambasted fear of "political correctness" and called for a flat tax, a private health care savings plan and smaller, less involved government.

A YouTube video of the speech has since gotten over 2 million views and earned praised from conservative pundits. He's been invited on numerous talk shows and his book has shot up to number one on Amazon's best seller list. A Wall Street Journal editorial called on Carson to run for president.

Carson has said he doesn't plan on running for office, but continues to keep the door open. "That calling has to come from God," he said. "I never rule anything out because I'm not totally in control."

The National Prayer Breakfast is not Carson's debut into politics. In 2008, President George Bush honored him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest national civilian honor. He has also offered the White House advice on national policy. In his interview with WJZ, Carson reiterated his platform on welfare and the economy.

"The best thing they can do is stop trying to interfere with everyone's life, particularly businesses," Carson said of government.

Carson, whose bio states he grew up in poverty in a single parent home, said that includes the welfare system.

"There are a lot of unwed mothers who had three or four children," Carson said. "The government and your fellow taxpayers will not be responsible for it."

The complicated tax code, he also said, should be thrown out for something simpler.

"It's not fair to sit and say, `You're working exceptionally well so we're going to hit you extra hard.' What is fair is the way God did it. You make $10, you pay $1. You make $10 billion, you pay one," Carson said.

While others have praised his speech, Dr. Lester Spence, who specializes in black politics at Johns Hopkins, said he's skeptical about Carson's political future. He said a lot of the buzz surrounding Carson has to do with the fact the Republican Party is desperate for a fresh face that appeals to minorities.

"The simple reading - it's not right - but the simple reading is that 'Wow, if we can find someone black and intelligent who thinks like us, we can get back on the path to political success,'" Spence told May.

GOP-R--Con-Men says:
Republicans hate govenment to the point they sabotage it whenever possible. They intentionally run up deficits spending on things not productive for America. They do this to justify saying there are no funds for social programs. They hate social programs. They do not believe the government should help individuals and they do not want government to work for individuals. This is another reason they sabotage it every chance they get.

The US post office is a prime example of republicans sabotaging government. They passed a law requiring the USPS to pre-fund employees retirement 75 years in advance in a 10 year window. No other entity in the entire country is required to do this except the USPS. This is what's causing the USPS to be cash strapped. Absent that the USPS would be fine. The bogus fiscal cliff crisis to the current sequester. There are more examples of republican sabotage, you get the picture.

You are so right! What we need are elections that do not even name party affiliations. We need Americans. Not European Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans or Asian Americans. We need AMERICANS!!!

If Ben Carson governs himself by what's logical, we can easily conclude he doesn't align himself with the Democrat party.

OMG.!!! OH MY GOD.11

Finally; A person who recognizes that what this Country needs is a government that uses common sense and logic to lead us.

I could not believe my ears when I listened to Dr. Carson speak.!!

Where has he been for the last 12 years.?

Logic and common sense are two words that congress and our President don't have in their vocabularies.

I move that DR. Carson start campaigning for President tomorrow.!

Every red-blooded American in the Country would vote for him.

Just think what it would mean to this nation if he became President.!

Dr. Carson's comments should be played 24/7 in the House of Representatives and in the Senate.

Maybe then (just maybe though) these crooked, inept, do-nothing, bought-and paid
for egomaniacs would learn something.

BEN CARSON FOR PRESIDENT.!!!!!

If you agree with this man, please share this with everybody you know.!

Why are you amoral socialistic liberals so hateful toward his viewpoints?

Rollo ..: Maybe they just rcognize that coveting and seeking to take property that does not belong to you is immoral. Allot of things including rape, killing those I disagree with, and eating you for food may be in my self interest but I don't do them because they are immoral.

You respect him for his accomplishments but you don't want to pay for them. Many doctors do help many people who don't have insurance or money, but they can't do everything for free. Insurance is the problem, not the doctors. But you're right, in the end it is the doctors pockets that will be affected. Of course they care about their pockets, just like you care about yours. They care because they carry hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt that takes them the rest of their lives to pay off. And while they are paying that off, they have to buy into a practice and pay their staff, and their OWN and their staff's health insurance. (BTW, doctors have to pay for insurance.) And they care because they pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in mal-practice insurance in case one of the uninsured patients they treated decides look for fake reasons to sue them. And they care because on top of that they are they are penalized for making too much so they have to pay more in taxes than many people. That's why they care. The system is going to be flooded now with thousands of people who will gladly not buy health insurance because it will be cheaper to just pay the fine and get the health care for free. And because patients want to have doctors like Carson with high accomplishments but don't want to pay them, pretty soon there won't be doctors with high accomplishments or at least very many of them because they won't be able to afford to get or keep those accomplishments. Obama Care, or free healthcare - is not the answer, it just creates another set of problems. Pres Obama is a lawyer, how much do they charge, ALOT, especially the good ones! Seems like self interest right there.

And lawyers have made it so they can get paid. Instead of electing lawyers, why dont we elect REGULAR people. Oh, that's right, money is speech, and you need PILES of MONEY to get elected. WTG GOP, you idiots.

Teabaggers, the armpit of the GOP...

KathyA2 says:
I have great respect for this doctor's professional abilities and his wonderful deeds but his view of things is a little skewed. He is a very rich doctor from Johns Hopkins Hospital who enjoys not just the privilege of the rich but enjoys comprehensive health care benefits for himself and his family and many other perks and benefits associated with JHH employment. Although JHH does treat some people for free, they are usually unusual medical situations or international cases of dire need. I spent many hours trying to get help for an uninsured person who was treated there only to find there are no real patient assistance programs for those who do not qualify for medicaid or have other insurance. And lets not forget the woman who was scheduled at JHH for surgery to save her eye sight and the people at JHH actually stalled the procedure until we were able to secure a valid medical assistnace number for this poverty stricken lady. The pressures in her eyes were so critical that stalling diminished her chances of keeping her vision. So...before the good doctor decides to run for office on this platform, he may want to do a little research on the effects of no access to health care and clean the steps at JHH first. The view on the outside looking in of that great facility if far different then the one he sees being on the inside looking out and DOWN on the les fortunate. I find his opinion to be very condescending frankly.
