ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Former U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici of New Mexico is acknowledging he fathered a son outside his marriage three decades ago.

Statements released by the Republican and the son's mother, Michelle Laxalt, of Alexandria, Va., identify Domenici as the father of Las Vegas lawyer Adam Paul Laxalt, the Albuquerque Journal reported Wednesday.

"I deeply regret this and am very sorry for my behavior," Domenici, 80, said in his statement. "I hope New Mexicans will view that my accomplishments for my beloved state outweigh my personal transgression."

Michelle Laxalt's statement said she and Domenici had agreed to keep his fatherhood secret because he and her father, ex-Nevada Gov. Paul Laxalt, were senators.

"One night's mistake led to pregnancy more than 30 years ago," Michelle Laxalt said in her statement, adding that she chose to raise her son as a single parent.

Both Domenici and Michelle Laxalt indicated in their statements that were disclosing his fatherhood because they thought somebody might soon attempt to make it public, with her statement saying she thought someone would shop it to the media to smear Domenici.

In his statement, Domenici said he was sorry that he caused hurt and disappointment for his wife and other family members. Domenici is the father of eight children with his wife, Nancy. He said he disclosed the situation to his family several months ago.

"I have apologized as best as I can to my wife, and we have worked together to strengthen our relationship," Domenici said.

Domenici told the Journal his son participated in the drafting of his statement. But it was unclear if the two had a prior relationship.

Laxalt's statement said her interaction with Domenici "consisted of telling him my decision, asking that he avail himself for health-related purposes, and asking that he agree that this remain private between the two of us."

Reached at his Washington home Wednesday morning, Domenici told The Associated Press he had nothing more to say.

Domenici served six terms, making him the longest-serving senator in New Mexico's history. He was known for his unflagging support of the state's national laboratories and military installations. In Washington, he became a power broker for his work on the federal budget and energy policy. He also was an advocate for insurance coverage for mental health.

Domenici declined to seek a seventh Senate term in 2008, saying he had been diagnosed with an incurable brain disorder.

The website for Adam Laxalt's law firm, Lewis and Roca, said he is a former U.S. Navy officer and lawyer who served in Iraq. He also worked for then-Sen. John Warner, R-Va., and as a special assistant to an undersecretary of state, according to the website.

THIRTY YEARS AGO.!!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME.??!

Who cares.

There is not one person on this earth who has not committed some transgression in the past.

Jesus; remember him; (maybe not; with Obama doing his level best to destroy Christianity in the US) died on the Cross that we might be given forgiveness for our sins.

Not to mention that members of Congress are guilty of committing more sins against the very people they are "supposed" to represent and their own families.

Lying, fraud, affairs, spousal abuse, income tax evasion etc. are just a few of the "sins" these self-righteous egomaniacs have committed.

Obama does not believe in God or Jesus either one.

If he did; there would not be so many attempts to remove Christian teaching and visible Christian icons (the Ten Commandments, removing the word GOD from our Pledge of Allegiance, currency etc.) are just a few examples.

Every time I hear him say the words "God bless America" or "God bless the United States", I could throw up.

Read his books, listen to him admit to taking part (along with Moochelle) to attending flag burnings, attend a service at the church he went to for 20 years.

Obama and Congress are among the biggest hypocrites on the face of the
Earth.!!!

THROW THE BUMS OUT.!!

FactFeed says:
The 'disgusting' part of it is that the Republican brand relentlessly and sanctimoniously lectures to the general population about its self-proclaimed 'superior' "Family Values" while the government lobbyist mother of the 'out-of-wedlock' child indignantly, impudently and self-righteously characterizes her son as a one-night-stand "mistake."

We're so profoundly sick & tired of being reminded about sociopathic Republican sanctimonious hypocrisy. It is quite obvious from the statements of the parties that the only regret anyone has about any of this is that the media was about to tear the mask off of the scherade. And the only emotion these sociopaths exhibit is 'anger' directed at the media.

When Republican hypocrits proclaim "Family Values" as the purported central plank of their platform, these sex scandal issues become relevant - they become 'public issues' - they become compelling evidence of Republican depraved hypocrisy. Republicans can NOT lay a superior claim to "Family Values" and there has long-been abundant proof for that conclusion.

There is no such thing as an untainted republican. But after November 2014 we will have much fewer of them around Washington.

@jv1970

The democratic platform don't stand on false 'family values' as republicans do. It's not about the actions it is about the hypocrisy and deceit.

The Kennedys and the Edwards didn't go preaching to others what the were doing personally.

You missed the point, it's about false values and hypocrisy.

Actually I think both Democrats and Republicans should just let these kind of stories be ignored from comments since we all know that one of their own will be the next one exposed. It is downright funny to see the two sides go after one another and then defend their own when it is the other way. Just YAWN and move on.

jv1970.....you missed my point. The Republicans are just as guilty acting high and mighty as the Democrats. You are only referring to the Democrats; be fair in you criticism.
