NRA CEO: Obama gun control effort a "charade"

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre told the Wayne Convention and Sport Show of the National Wild Turkey Federation in Nashville today that President Obama's State of the Union address exposed the "charade" that the president's gun control efforts were tied to protecting children.

"It's not about keeping kids safe in schools...They only care about their decades-long, decades-old gun control agenda," said LaPierre.

"In an hour-long speech, nowhere were the words 'school safety' to be found," he said. "Just think about that. Less than two months after saying we had to look at our schools, the president made not one mention in his entire speech of the need to improve security for our schoolchildren."

While it is true that Mr. Obama did not utter the exact phrase "school safety," he did specifically reference protecting children within the context of gun violence.

"Of course, what I've said tonight matters little if we don't come together to protect our most precious resource: our children," he said. "It has been two months since Newtown. I know this is not the first time this country has debated how to reduce gun violence. But this time is different. Overwhelming majorities of Americans -- Americans who believe in the Second Amendment -- have come together around common-sense reform, like background checks that will make it harder for criminals to get their hands on a gun. Senators of both parties are working together on tough new laws to prevent anyone from buying guns for resale to criminals. Police chiefs are asking our help to get weapons of war and massive ammunition magazines off our streets, because these police chiefs, they're tired of seeing their guys and gals being outgunned."

The president went on to call on Congress to hold a vote on gun control measures in the name of victims of gun violence, including 15-year-old Chicago native Hadiya Pendleton who was shot to death soon after performing at inauguration-related ceremonies last month.

LaPierre's speech follows an op-ed in which he suggested that Americans need guns to protect themselves from "Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals." He claimed that "superstorm" Sandy exposed "the hellish world that the gun prohibitionists see as their utopia" and that "Latin American drug gangs have invaded every city of significant size in the United States."

"It's not paranoia to buy a gun," he wrote. "It's survival."

In his remarks in Nashville, LaPierre renewed his call to put armed guards in every public school in the country and said that his warnings that Mr. Obama would work to "destroy our Second Amendment rights" if reelected were coming true. He railed against the president's proposal for universal background checks - which polls show are supported by more than nine in 10 Americans, including 85 percent of NRA members - saying "there's nothing universal about it at all."

"Think about it - criminals won't be part of that database," he said. "It's common sense. They'll steal their guns or they'll get everything else they want on the black market."

"It's going to be our names, the names of good people, that will be put in this massive database," LaPierre added.

The NRA CEO said that Mr. Obama has "taken the art of public deception and manipulation to a whole new level" and told the audience that NRA membership is five million strong and growing by "tens of thousands."

"For our Second Amendment freedom, Mr. President, we will stand and fight throughout this country for our freedom," he said. "We promise you that. Every single one of us from one end of the country to the other."

LaPierre left the stage after his 20-minute speech to a standing ovation.

Here's what's happening: The NRA CEO, Wayne LaPierre, is conducting a grass roots campaign, stirring up a local support to spread the NRA "doctrine".

Here's what's not happening: Churches are doing nothing. The NAACP is silent on the issue. The military is silent. The local Sherrif's office is silent.

There simply is no potent Anti-NRA lobby with an ANTI-NRA "doctrine" that has any momentum.

Here's what going to happen: Nothing.

Local Sheriffs (not Sherrifs) are not silent at all. Many have emphatically stated they will not enforce gun restrictions the deem unconstitutional and arrest any Federal agent who tries enforcement.

Which right-wing fringe BLOG did that morsel come from, just so the paranoid schizophrenia of the pro-gun lobby screech even louder?

You're the one that needs to buy a clue, posting such nonsense that can be easily debunked over the internet these days!

Jared Loughner was fired from his job at a Quiznos restaurant, with his manager saying he had undergone a personality transformation. After this, Loughner briefly volunteered at a local animal shelter, walking dogs, but he was asked not to return. He never worked with any political campaign.

After his arrest, two medical evaluations diagnosed him as paranoid schizophrenic, making him a perfect candidate for the gun-toting NRA.

How did that work out for the insurrectionists in western Pennsylvania protesting taxes during the presidency of George Washington?

Throughout counties in western Pennsylvania, protesters used violence and intimidation to prevent federal officials from collecting the distiller's tax. Resistance came to a climax in July 1794, when Washington rode at the head of an army of 13,000 militia provided by the governors of Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, in order to suppress the insurgency.

The Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated that the new national government had the willingness and ability to suppress violent resistance to its laws.

More irrelevant left wing tripe that is only part of the true story concerning the 2nd Amendment and George Washington.
Seems citizens were allowed to keep their firearms after the US has a full Functioning Army and Navy in the early to mid 1800's.
So much for you version of history.

Aren't you the history revisionist, deferring to the early to mid-1800s, when in fact the Whiskey Insurrection occurred in 1794, when that "over-zealous, power-mad government" deployed 13,000 militia to suppress violent resistance to its laws.

Try to stay on topic next time, since clearly INSURRECTION against our government is illegal according to the constitution!

Are you so dumb that you think all Conservatives are old white guys? Many Independents, Libertarians and even Democrats do not agree with Obama on this issue and are members of the NRA to help them protect their gun rights.
Man do you have limited thinking.

Where do I start? Criminals don't follow laws, so how is taking guns from honorable citizens going to stop crime. The gun control lobby, libs and the MSM continue to lie about the Sandy Hook shooting too. The only rifle the freak had never left his trunk. The freak used four pistols, but the gun control Nazi's are continuing to push their lie that he used a Bushmaster.
It is very rare for assault rifles to be used in crimes. The two high profile cases in the past year actually involved kook lib Obama voters. The Denver shooter was from the occupy Wall Street crowd and a registered Dem. The Sandy Hook freak was also a registered Democrat who hated Christians. The agenda of the lib MSM is evil as they are herded like sheep by the Elite before the big banks bring down the US economy.
Look at Mexico and how gun control took weapons from regular citizens and left a country to be overrun by gangs. The ATF under Holder and Obama were caught giving thousands of assault rifles to the Mexican Drug Cartels. For libs who have brains in another reality, the op was called the "Fast and Furious" and ATF agents went to the media after their agents were being killed by these same weapons. The Obama admin did this to try to make their lies about US weapons going to Mexico a reality. The MSM uses warped stats for Australia too. Sure their maybe less gun violence, but it was replaced by massive surge in home invasions and assaults because they now know that home owners don't have a gun to protect their families. So crime is actually on the rise. The same thing goes for England too. Look at America. All the places where crime is worse are the same places where guns are banned.

Let's point out the obvious: a few bad people because of their recklessness, irresponsibilty, loose emotions, greed and/or poor mental health ruin it for everyone else by driving laws and regulations to contain them.

It won't hurt gun owners to have background checks to try to identify felons and the mentally ill to deny them guns. People who have guns to protect against home invasions should welcome the effort to take guns from those invaders.

But here is the catch: guns are tools and become some people's quick solution to their problems. If the guns weren't there, they would have to find alternative solutions. Consequently, gun owners and their families are 18 times more likely to have injuries and deaths. Look who was killed first in the Sandyhook murders, his mother who owned the guns. But this also points out how a mentally ill person got the arms and how the background check laws would not have been effective. Gun owners must secure them against emotional use, but then that would be a problem during a home invasion when quick access is needed. 18 to 1, which is the most likely outcome?

The "gun owners" the slanted stats you are quoting from very much included the gangs from those "gun control protected" areas like D.C. and Chicago. You knew that, right? But, you didn't think to mention it in your post. Slipped your mind? I hope I'm being clear here, because it's important. This 18 to 1 statistic (actually, where in the heck did you get that from?). But, assuming you didn't make it up out of thin air (which, of course, your ilk is very capable of), it came from some study that included a high concentration of inner city gangs and their "war zone" situation. It's like the statistic that you are (somehow) safer without a gun in the home. As if the THOUSANDS of times a day that guns are used to protect their owners don't count.
"Let's point out the obvious" Indeed!

Here's "obvious" for you - if you're in a "home invasion" situation and the safety of your family and yourself rests in your hands - what do you want between yourself and the BAD GUYS? A "GUN FREE ZONE" sign, or an AR-15? An AR-15 with a STANDARD 30 round magazine (you idiot!). (sorry, I couldn't help myself with that last remark.)

HansEcker says:
People have a right to choose to defend themselves and their families with a firearm.

By focusing on anti-gun laws, Obama seeks to needlessly register scores of millions of law abiding gun owners. Obama seeks to make it a burden to go through the registration process to discourage gun ownership.

Obama seeks to ban semi-automatic guns and high capacity magazines for the average American. He claims that we do not need such guns, yet he will exempt police officers from the ban of these very same guns and magazines because law enforcement needs them.

Obama's reasoning is not credible. The fact is that Obama doesn't want the average citizen to own guns while he fully supports law enforcement to have whatever guns they want.

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

@ outback_jackson - There has to be an underlining cause for your antisocial behavior that makes you act so childish. Let's see if we can figure it out together. Were you home-schooled ? This might help shed some light on the subject. Good luck. I hope you get help.

Dr Fairchild said, "If we can figure out precisely what underlies the inability to show a normal stress response, we may be able to design new treatments for severe behaviour problems. We may also be able create targeted interventions for those at higher risk.
