Back on the road, Obama to push immigration reform
When President Obama hits the stage at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas today to talk about immigration reform, he'll be employing a tactic that he's made standard practice: Rallying public support for a challenging policy agenda.
This time, however, the situation is a bit different: Unlike issues such as health care reform or tackling the deficit, the subject of immigration reform has lately inspired a significant level of cooperation and agreement. A group of eight senators yesterday unveiled a blueprint for comprehensive immigration reform legislation that they called "a major breakthrough."
- Is now the time for immigration reform?
- Immigration proposal a "major breakthrough," senators say
- Poll: Most support letting working illegal immigrants stay in U.S.
While the Senate seemingly one-upped the president, releasing their plan before his event today, its proposal sits on shaky ground. There are still a number of Republicans opposed to the idea of "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, and even those who want to create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented residents could very easily get bogged down in the details. If the Senate's plan falls apart, Mr. Obama will be ready to step in with his own legislative outline, administration officials tell CBS News.

Borders now "more secure than they have ever been," Carney says
Mr. Obama today will lay out his vision for immigration reform -- a vision he laid out in a major immigration speech in El Paso, Texas in May 2011. The blueprint introduced by the "group of eight" in the Senate is, in fact, very similar to the president's plan. Most critically, both lay out a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.
The president plans to make the case today that the Senate should act quickly, and he plans to address the Latino community specifically, according to administration officials. The latest CBS News poll shows that voters are increasingly on his side: 51 percent of Americans think undocumented immigrants working in the U.S. should be able to stay and apply for citizenship, up from 14 points since September 2011. Another 20 percent of Americans now say undocumented immigrants should stay as guest workers.
Yesterday, the White House credited the growing support for a pathway to citizenship -- among the public and in the Senate -- to Mr. Obama's efforts. Work on immigration reform is happening now, White House spokesman Jay Carney said, "because a consensus is developing in the country, a bipartisan consensus. And it's happening because the president has demonstrated significant leadership on this issue when the effort to achieve comprehensive immigration reform did not succeed in 2010, this president continued to press for it."

Do Obama and Congress think all the things they failed to accomplish are just going to evaporate from the minds of Americans because this is a new term.??
On the other hand; we all might be better off if he and Congress hit the road and forgot to come back.!!
No longer "illegal aliens" but "undocumented residents."
I suppose prisoners are just "fraternal roommates."
America is doomed.
why not just grant legalization for those who have established their roots here?
Reform is needed, the solution to many problems related to immigration facing the U.S., will depend on Barack Obama proposals, provided they are fair, because it is about the future of millions of people are in the U.S. for years.
"au revoir"
Obama and the Repugnanticans are only trying to gain political capital they can use for the next mid-term elections.
The people are so full of crap; it's pathetic.!!
Evidently, they have finally recognized the damage they have done in the last four years to the US by doing nothing but bickering, spending more and more money we don't have, stalling on critical legislation, and returning what they owe to those who bought-and paid their way into office.
Obama is on CNN now, saying that our immigration laws are flawed, outdated, broken etc.
Maybe if Obama had been willing to enforce those laws for the last four years; instead of suing a state that established their own in an effort to help themselves; we might not have all these illegal immigrants.
Obama just took a page out of McCain's book when he said we cannot have 11 million people living in the shadows.
What about the multiple millions of Americans who are living in the shadows because they can't find a job.???
What about the millions of Americans who are homeless because Obama allowed a group of crooks to repossess their homes through deliberate acts of criminal behavior.???
What about the increased number of Americans living in poverty thanks to Obama and Congress.???
Many of the illegal immigrants and even those who are legal don't contribute to our economy; because they send the money back to their families in their native countries.
Obama just said "I believe we are finally in the moment...".!
Americans foolishly believed every lie Obama told when he ran that turned into broken promises for his first term in office.
I don't believe one word that comes out of this Socialist's mouth.
In addition to broken promises, he has also taken steps to tear down or eliminate the Constitution, ordered all religious references removed from Federal buildings (the Washington Monument is covered with them.. is he going to order that torn down?)has already removed the words "In GOD We Trust" removed from our postage stamps and wants these same words removed from our currency and coins and the Pledge of Allegiance, ramming Obamacare down our throats ( a plan that is going to cost those who have even minimal healthcare possibly hundreds more per month to pay for those who don't have it) fining businesses that can't afford healthcare for their employees and fining (or even arresting) people who can't afford it etc.
This doesn't sound to me like we still live in "the land of the free and the home of the brave".
Sounds more like Socialism/Communism or the land of the 1% if the Repugnanticans (John Boehner in particular) have their way.
GB2, Obama and the current Congress have done more to destroy life in the US as we knew it than any other Presidents or Congress I can remember.
If the American people do not start standing up for themselves; trying to regain control of their own lives and country, I promise you we are going to regret it for generations to come.
As for the 51%; I would like the names of every one of them as proof that they agree we should change our immigration laws.!!
