If Fla. doesn't pan out, Ga. GOP wants Allen West
All signs continue to point to a defeat for Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., in his bid for a second term, but the feisty conservative congressman is refusing to give up.
West's campaign filed papers in St. Lucie County, Fla., requesting a recount of early ballots. If granted, this would be the second recount. A previous, partial recount has already occurred and its results showed West with 1,907 fewer votes than challenger Patrick Murphy. That gave Murphy a 0.6 percent lead, which is greater than the 0.5 percent threshold Florida requires for an automatic recount.
West, however, called the first recount a "sham" and has vowed to press on. Murphy declared victory last week and is on Capitol Hill in Washington today with other newly-elected members for freshman orientation.
At least one of West's fans is holding out hope for his congressional career. Sue Everhart, chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, said she would like West to run for office in a new state - Georgia. The move isn't so far-fetched for the Florida congressman, as West was born and raised in Atlanta.
Everhart has called West "one of the finest congressman this country's ever had," according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
