Poll: Storm puts close race on pause

Before Superstorm Sandy put the presidential race on pause, President Obama held just a one-point lead over Mitt Romney nationally, according to a new CBS News/ New York Times poll, while voters continue to see Romney as stronger on the economy.

In the final days of the campaign, the storm may have changed the dynamics of the race, giving Mr. Obama a chance to display presidential leadership while compelling both the president and Romney to give up valuable days on the campaign trail. Just ahead of Sandy's arrival, however, the presidential race remained close, with Mr. Obama leading Romney among likely voters 48 percent to 47 percent, within the poll's three-point margin of error. The survey was conducted Oct. 25-28, while the storm made landfall in New Jersey on Oct. 29.

CBS

With just a week to go before the election, 10 percent of likely voters are still uncommitted, saying they are either undecided or could change their minds about who to vote for. Enthusiasm about voting is higher among Romney's supporters, 68 percent of whom say they are very excited about voting. Among Mr. Obama's supporters, 59 percent say they are very excited. Nearly eight in 10 likely voters now claim to be paying a lot of attention to the campaign, including similar percentages of Obama and Romney voters.

There is still a gender gap in the race: women support the president, 52 percent to 44 percent, while men support Romney, 51 percent to 44 percent. And while each candidate gets strong support from their respective political parties, Romney now holds a 12-point lead among the swing voting group of independents (51 percent to 39 percent). Romney retains the support of white voters, while the President enjoys strong support from non-whites.

On the issues

Romney now leads the president on the economy by six points, up from three points in a CBS News/NYT poll released just over a week ago. The Republican candidate has also widened his advantage on handling the deficit and now leads 54 percent to 39 percent. He also leads the president on handling illegal immigration by six points.

Mr. Obama leads Romney by five points on foreign policy and terrorism, but his lead on those issues has narrowed. He also has a nine-point advantage on the issue of Medicare and a 12-point advantage on abortion.

The candidates are close on taxes (Romney leads, 47 percent to 46 percent) and health care (Mr. Obama leads, 48 percent to 45 percent).

More voters say the president (52 percent to 43 percent) would do more than Romney to help the middle class.

Romney, however, has an advantage on the issue of bipartisanship. Half of likely voters think Romney would work better with both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, while 39 percent think the president would.

Voters' views of the two candidates differ sharply on corporate taxes. Though both have promised to lower the corporate tax rate, 80 percent of likely voters think Mr. Obama would raise taxes on business if he were re-elected. Seventy percent think Romney would not do so if he becomes president. About half think each man would raise taxes on people like them if elected.

ELEPHANT OR DONKEY - GOT TO LOVE THEM BOTH

This election is not about solving quantum gravity, is not about metaphysical wizardry, is not about religion, is not about gun control, is not about abortion, is not about having an MBA, is not about charisma, is not about race, is not about gender, is not about the best political slogan, is not about a newspaper's endorsement, is not about disenfranchised voters, is not about gotcha gaffe's, is not about red states - rednecks and blue states - bluebloods, is not about immigration, is not about military might, these are just red herrings for the politician's to dish up to their uninformed or in most instances misinformed constituents.

Then what is it about?????

IT IS ABOUT:

WHICH PARTY RAISES OUR STANDARD OF LIVING TO ITS HIGHEST POSSIBLE LEVEL FOR THE GREATEST NUMBER OF ITS CITIZENS DOING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF DAMAGE TO THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF FUTURE GENERATIONS?

TO TRY AND REACH THIS OBJECTIVE EVERY FOUR YEARS WE HAVE TO LISTEN OVER AND OVER TO THE RETORIC OF POLITICANS. EACH CLAIMING THEY HAVE THE RIGHT SOLUTION BUT WANTING NOTHING MORE THAN GREATER WEALTH AND GREATER POWER FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS. IF ANYTHING IS LEFT OVER IT MIGHT MAKE ITS WAY TO THE GENERAL POPULATION BUT DON'T BUDGET FOR IT.

NOW FOR THE PRIZE: THE ELECTED WINNER AND THEIR CONTRIBUTORS, GETS TO MAKE THE RULES ON COLLECTING (THE TAXES) AND SPENDING (THE BUDGET) OF ALL OUR NATION'S COLLECTIVE WEALTH. WEALTH THAT IS CONTRIBUTED TO BY ALL OF US BUT IN DISPROPORTIONATE LEVELS BASED ON TAXATION LAWS. WHICH MOST AGREE FAVOR THE WEALTHY - THAT'S OK THE MIDDLE CLASS HAS OTHER ADVANTAGES.

NOW THE ONLY QUESTION IS WHO BEST ACCOMPLISHES THE OBJECTIVE THE DONKEYS OR THE ELEPHANTS. HEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM, BECAUSE AS ALWAYS "THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS" WHICH WE NEVER GET TO SEE AND FULLY UNDERSTAND UNTIL THEY HAVE FALLEN ON OUR COLLECTIVE HEADS. CONSEQUENTIALLY WE HAVE BEEN TRAINED NEVER TO LOOK UP; THEREFORE WE ARE NEVER ABLE TO SEE AHEAD.

I LIKE THE ELEPHANTS PLAN BECAUSE THEY CERTAINLY CAN EARN A PENNY AND KNOW DAMN WELL HOW TO KEEP IT, EVEN IN DEATH. DON'T DARE REACH UNDER AN ELEPHANT TO TRY AN GET ONE OF ITS PENNIES. THEY WANT TO SPEND THEIR PENNIES ON THE MILITARY AND LAVISH LIFESTYLES. THAT'S OK TO A LIMIT THEN IT STARTS TO LOOK GROTESQUE TO THE REST OF US.

I LIKE THE DONKEYS PLAN BECAUSE THEY REALIZE NOT EVERYONE STARTS LIFE EQUALLY AND TRADEGY MAY STRIKE AT ANYTIME, THEREFORE, SOME OF THE ELEPHANTS PENNIES ARE NEEDED TO LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD IN THE FORM OF PUBLIC EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, AND SMALL BUSINESS LOANS/GRANTS. DON'T DROP A PENNY AROUND A DONKEY; IT'S OUT OF HERE.

NOW TO DECIDE - IS THIS THE YEAR OF THE ELEPHANT OR DONKEY? A TOUGH DECISION FOR THE INDEPENDANTS, AN EASY DECISION FOR THE MISINFORMED, JUST KEEP VOTING LIKE YOU ALWAYS HAVE.

GET TO THE END, ENOUGH ALREADY.
FROM CCNMONEY.COM "The gap between the rich and the middle class is larger than it has ever been due to the bursting of the housing bubble.
The richest 1% of U.S. households had a net worth 225 times greater than that of the average American household in 2009, according to analysis conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, a liberal think tank. That's up from the previous record of 190 times greater, which was set in 2004. The elephants have certainly been making hay from 2002 - 2009 and studies from many sources say so. Now the donkeys want some of that hay as it has been a lean 8 years for them. The herd (middle class) is shrinking, if they become extinct who would protect and defend the elephants.
The donkeys have gotten a little fatter for 4 years but are still endangered. My vote is to let them have a little more to ensure their survival and if they have made substantial gains on their own, with some elephant muscle, cut the cord in 2016 and go after the Chinese for economic supremacy in the world. As we all know "might makes right", and we have certainly been right in securing the best democracy to ever exist.

He already did "tell us how" he would create more jobs. It's no secret.

More jobs = more tax income to federal government. Cut waste, fraud and make tough decisions on budget cuts. Money does not grow on trees. You can not tax the rich enough to pay for the deficits we already have."

LOL, Dubyanomics all over again! Dubya's foreign advisers too!

LIE: I'm good for Oil. Big-Oil Romney wants to be a Dictator. Drill-baby-drill in Alaska and everywhere, without regulations, against the 99% of the locals' wish. Never mind Exxon Valdez and Gulf's Great Spill. We live in Obama's democracy not in Romney's Tyranny. He bought the Candidacy and thinks he can buy everything. VOTE FOR ME SUCKERS.

I'm really impressed by Romney's canned-food drive in response to the estimated $50 billion in damages suffered by homeowners and businesses on the East Coast. Now, let's see, the price of canned corn at 62 cents times how many cans to equal $50 billion?

What Happened in Benghazi. You know it must have been horrible if the media is covering it up. Or is the media just embarrased that they got played like school girls when they swallowed some Obama lie about a video...
From what has leaked out the last moments of our Ambassadors life were horrible, Someone said he was under attack for 7 hours as they tried to penetrate a safe room which they eventualy set on fire. We the American people need to know what out Government servants know, so that we can express our true disgust and bring justice to the Ambassador and his family

It's a mystery to me why anyone except the 1% and Mormons would vote for Romney. Obama's done a very good job. The economy is growing at a good 2%, our foreign relations haven't been better in over a decade, and he saved our auto industry. I'll be voting for the President - Obama that is.

Jay, you need to pull your head out. I for one don't remember the last time one of our Ambassadors was dragged out into the streets and killed. If you think our reputation is good right now you aren't paying attention. And a growth rate of 2% is not good, it is barely alive, don't know where you picked that up but my 5 yr old has a better grasp on the world, how it works and what's wrong with this country. Don't know why you don't.

I realize a large portion of the electorate on both sides is pretty uneducated, but I still can't believe such a large percentage would consider voting for a Mormon tax evading snake oil salesman. The last four years have been a slow and steady improvement out of what could have been a much bigger disaster. Do I wish there was a better choice? Sure. But my God, people. Think.

I was going to respond but DGI pretty much summed it up. One thing though KBB - you can attribute the slow pace of recovery directly to Obama. His policies have generated an anti-business environment, depressing the job market and slowing growth as he strives to double the size of the government.
