Hurricane Sandy disrupts campaign's final days

Updated 12:30 p.m. ET

AVON LAKE, Ohio As the East Coast prepared for Hurricane Sandy's landfall, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday turned his victory offices in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Virginia into collection centers for storm relief supplies. His campaign has also ceased fundraising emails to many of the states in the path of the storm.

Sandy forces Obama to cancel several campaign events

The record-breaking storm, which threatened Monday to do serious damage throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, threw a wrench into the final week of campaigning for both presidential candidates. President Obama cancelled an appearance at a rally in Orlando this afternoon to return to the White House to monitor storm response efforts.

The Republican's campaign cancelled events scheduled Monday night for Romney in Wisconsin and for running-mate Paul Ryan in Melbourne and Lakeland, Florida.

The Romney campaign also cancelled a scheduled rally in New Hampshire on Tuesday and three events in Virginia.

"Governor Romney believes this is a time for the nation and its leaders to come together to focus on those Americans who are in harm's way, said spokeswoman Gail Gitcho.

Romney said during a stop in Celina, Ohio, on Sunday, "I know that right now some people in the country are a little nervous about a storm about to hit the coast. And our thoughts and prayers are with the people who will find themselves in harm's way."

Romney has been in touch with Republican Govs. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Bob McDonnell of Virginia about their storm preparations. The candidate also sent a message to states in the path of the storm asking residents to be safe and to look out for their neighbors, and encouraging support for local Red Cross organizations. He also asked his supporters to bring their Romney-Ryan yard signs indoors.

"For safety's sake, as you and your family prepare for the storm, please be sure to bring any yard signs inside," Romney wrote in the message. "In high winds they can be dangerous, and cause damage to homes and property."

People say this like they are mad at nature. With the wind blowing so hard all the political campaign yard signs are gone and nobody knew who to vote for. It's hilarious.

Next week's election will have Liberals without a place to vote in the Northeast - will Obama declare martial law and postpone the presidential elections for 6+ months?

Wacko Liberals will love this, the Lamestream press will absolutely go for it, and the Supreme Court will vote for it.

America's first coup d'etat and many will cheer for it; that's how far gone America is under the rule of Obama.

It's totally unconstitutional, of course, but when did that stop our little dictator?

Really? Are we really make a hurricane a political issue? This is completely ridicules you people need to grow the hell up, this is not something that either candidate has any control over, and it does not have some subtle affect on our political process. It's a hurricane! My god this is getting ridicules

Ah, yes, of course. A state of emergency.

Can't release those job numbers, no.

Why not send out the guard to shut down the polling places.

Can't have an election when the blue states have a rainstorm.

Wouldn't be prudent.

Not at this juncture.

The Republicans generally believe in " You are on your own". Even when disasters strike like hurricanes Romney said such disaster should not be handled by Federal Government but State and local governments. Some disaster are so big that not one single state can handle it. When BP disaster oil spill occurred in the Gulf it affected many states and their environment and President Obama handled that so smoothly that clean started right away and placed the responsibility to BP Oil for damages to $20 billion costs. Nobody talks of this disaster as they still talk of Katrina where there has been no satisfactory closure because it was handled very poorly using private contractors this is how Romney will handle disasters so contractors can profit while people will suffer.

VA?? Day !....VA Day !...Victory in America Day!

Across the Great Land, bells are ringing.

The clanging of the church bells carries across the valley and up through the hills.

The dairy farmer's son in upstate New York hears them as he herds the cows to the upper pasture in the Adirondacks.

The rancher in Montana bringing feed to his stock after a heavy snowfall hears the good news over the static on his radio.

The handy man in the suburbs of Milwaukee listens raptly to the morning talk show host as he drives his van to the day's first client's home. He beams at the sound of the relieved callers celebrating the joyous news of victory.... of freedom won once again.

The house wife in Southern Ohio hears the news of relief as she pads down to her kitchen to begin another day. Maybe there is hope her husband's coal mine won't shut down, now.?

The young man in Denver comes off the night shift at Walmart, stocking shelves. A welder by training, he is hopeful there will be work laying pipelines, soon.?

The 58 year old doctor in New Hampshire is once again, hopeful. Maybe he won't have to think about closing down his practice, anymore.

In Chicago, a sporadically employed union electrician is relieved. He voted in secret against the instructions of his union bosses, but he feels vindicated.... and hopeful.

In New Mexico, a Mexican-American landscaper loads up his truck and trailer with his equipment, listening to the news, preparing for the days work. Maybe now his business will pick up...maybe soon he will be able to rehire some good men he had to lay off.

In Afghanistan, the young African-American Marine feels a sense of relief, mixed with the sadness of disappointment. The news about what really happened in Libya had left him dismayed. He had wished for so much more from this president, but it just hadn't happened. So, he had done what he felt needed to be done, and voted against the man he had carried such high hopes for, four years ago.

In California, a young father of two toddlers and a new born baby, who had immigrated from India twelve years ago with an engineering degree, thinks how he and his wife had made the right choice. He worries about his state of California, and the mess it is in. He hopes this election will somehow make a difference. Maybe he will have to move away to another state if it doesn't.

On the road, on the long horizon highway, an independent trucker drives his rig on the first leg of his 1500 mile journey to his next destination, switching the dial to find the clearest station with his favored talk show hosts. He glories in the good news. Maybe now there will be some relief from the overbearing, arrogant regulators of the Department of Transportation. He thinks business will pick up, and later, maybe diesel prices will start sliding down. One can hope, now.

deng..dong...DONG....DONG...deng..dong....DONG......DONG.....deng...dong....DONG....DONG

He can still hear the church bells ringing miles down the valley. He opens the gate to the mountain pasture to let the cows through. Their breaths form bursts of vapor in the cold November air.

He thinks this news is good. He's too young to understand, fully. But, he knows his Dad is elated. And, his Dad tells him the that his future has just been brightened by this election.....that it has been an historic election... they are going to talk about it, more.....his Dad tells him he must know everything, what it all means to him.... to his future...........He wants to know.

look Mensa, I feel horrible people died and it is an American Tragedy. Whats a bigger tragedy is the way its being politicized for a vote. You expect us to believe fox news who claims that CIA operatives who were there at the time, who risked their careers, location of their safe houses, lives and broke an oath to talk to Fox news? You expect us to believe only Fox news, the BIGGEST joke in all the history of media was the one they chose to contact? You expect me to believe that Obama sat with his feet propped up in his situation room and watched these Americans die? You might be the dumbest friggin person on earth if you expect me to believe it. My brain stem still functions Mensa.
