Final showdown comes at heated political moment

This post originally appeared on Slate.

The third presidential debate is the final big national event before the race to the finish. Tonight's debate--which will focus on foreign policy--is a double superlative: it involves the most important issues which a president has more control over than any other and the political stakes are the highest. Serious political consequences have a tendency to consume intelligent argument, which means the debate could end up feeling like the larger campaign where the fracas has little to do with the actual issues. Think back to the last presidential debate's confusing exchange of blows over Libya. Now imagine 90 minutes of that.

The foreign policy debate welcomes platitudes. The president wraps himself in the office and the challenger can paint a fantastical vision of the world without fear of being called out. Romney advisers say that in the first few debates voters warmed to him because it sounded like he had a plan. They didn't know exactly what that plan was, but he sounded confident and that was enough. That voter reaction is especially likely in the foreign policy debate, where the listening audience is going to be making their opinions based on which man sounds like he shares their values, looks comfortable in the commander in chief role, and seems to be telling the truth. Those qualities may or may not have anything to do with the specific questions asked of the candidates.

The debate takes place at a dead even political moment. According to the Real Clear Politics' average of the polls, it's tied. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC poll has it knotted at 47. If this is the case, both men have something to lose and something to gain--if they are willing to reach for it. This is their last big chance to change the dynamic in those key battleground states with a single shot.

How the campaigns read the polls may determine their strategy. The Romney campaign would like us to ignore every poll but the Gallup daily tracking poll in which Romney is ahead by 7 points. If that's what they really believe, then we'd expect a different Romney than the one who seized on the president's remarks about Libya in the last debate. Anxious to score points, Romney lost his way by focusing so precisely on the president's words. If he's really got a solid 7-point buffer, he merely needs to look presidential, make his case for a world of clarity, and commit no unforced errors. Why should he risk the race by pressing his foreign-policy case too forcefully? He might look intemperate, and even in the best circumstances what he stands to pick up might not be that great. Voters care more about the economy, and foreign policy is typically the incumbent's turf. In that reading of the polls, all Romney has to do is make sure his tie is straight and that he does nothing to accidentally scare swing state voters.

How does Obama's team see this third encounter? The president battled back in the second debate, but not enough to make up all the ground he lost in their first meeting. The Pew poll shows that the president's foreign policy advantage has dropped, along with his poll numbers. A month ago Obama led Romney by 15 points on foreign policy, now he only leads by 4. That may very well be the result of Romney's overall surge--people are seeing him in a more favorable light so they see him more favorably across all questions.

Whenever both men drill down on a topic and seem particularly passionate, think about the voters in battleground states. So if the scuffle is over Libya, think about trust and suburban women. Romney wants you to think that the president isn't being honest with you about the chain of events. Obama wants you to think that Romney is so politically craven that he won't be a good steward of the office. He's driven by politics, not a core set of values. When you hear about China, think about Ohio blue collar workers. When you hear talk about defense spending, think about Virginia; the state is the No. 1 recipient of federal defense dollars. In the key swing district of Hampton Roads, 45 percent of the economy is tied to the military.

Hmmmm wonder where they are getting all these percentages from ? Point it out to me please because I dont see it and I have looked on the main page the politics page and others. Oh & in my opinion Obama lost. He was rude, arrogant and had nothing to say accept call Romney a liar and without any proof. The man is annoying because he interrupts constantly, and cant shut his mouth to let the other person have their time. The moderator should be the one interrupting WHEN the speakers time is up. NOT Obama

Lol, I love it. President Abomination is talking in circles again. He consistently jaw jacks about the so called issues and actions he has taken in foreign and US policy. Then he tries to attack Romney over and over as if it somehow it makes him look more Presidential. The truth of the matter is he has no answers. He is not right for this job. ObamaOsama is just a boy in a mans job.
I have to say, Romney is SO far and away more Presidential than Obamaosama. These men are in two different worlds in terms of knowledge and action.
Obama will get no help from this debate. If anything Romney will get a bigger lead. My guess is Obamaosama IS DONE!!!

Two worlds of knowledge and action is right but you got it backwards.
And at least Obama got Osama something the last GOP lackey failed to do for 4+ years despite his vows to do so. It is amazing how much you righties will let your party get away with while demonizing the left for the exact same actions. Definition of hypocrisy.

Vote Romney if you want to be a corporate slave to the 1%.
As for liars, no one can hold a stick to Romney, how can you call Obama one and not include Romney in a straight face. He has been on both sides of every major issue so how can anyone know what he will really do.
Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?

The point is that Mr. Romney gives, and he and his wife give a lot so that others will benefit. I'll put my support behind a man who gives to others so that one day they will be able to give to others. If you teach a man to fish you give him the ability to learn a trade so he can feed his family. If you give a man a fish he eats for one meal and will be back for more later! Kind of reminds me of America these days...more people on food stamps, unemployment and welfare than ever before. I am sure that most of the 23 million people in that situation would rather have a job and their Integrity than a handout. However due to this buffoons lousy policies most of these people have no choice because they have to feed their families. What's obambi going to do over the next four years when the 53% who are helping the 47% start to lose their jobs. Who is going to support them then. Who will get to stay on food stamps, unemployment and welfare...and who decides and based on what pre-requisites? Just something to ponder while you eat your fish.

Anybody guessing how long it will take Willard to give us a humanizing "antecdote" about the soldier's wife he met in (where else) Ohio?

I'm guessing question #2.

Thank GOD I voted early....no more of this nonsense for me. Everybody you should petition your legislators to have early voting....then we wouldn't have these endless nonsense debates. All they do is regurgitate what they said for the past year.

I'm sick of hearing about Romney giving his money to charity
1. He gives his money to Charities in his OWN NAME!!
2. He gives money to the Mormons
3. He gives money for tax breaks. It's not kindness that drives men like Romney to give money away. Rich people will give 10's of thousands of dollars away just so they can save twice that much through tax right off's, loopholes and different tax brackets.

Giving money to yourself doesn't count. It's only a charity if it helps someone. Neither his own charity nor the Mormon Church qualify.

What is your basis for that Sumner. Last I checked Obama works for the Government and Federal Employees get paid based on a fixed scale so no matter race, creed, sex, etc. if you are a GS-9 you all get paid the same.
Plus it is the GOP that voted No on the Paycheck Fairness Act. Go stick your head back in the sand and stop spouting nonsense.
