Confident Romney continues shift to center

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. An optimistic Mitt Romney told a Florida audience Sunday that after he wins the Sunshine State and takes back the White House, he will do "everything in (his) power" to unite the American people, including working across the aisle with Democrats in Congress.

Speaking under dark rain clouds in south-central Florida, Romney rallied a crowd of more than 9,000 people, telling them that the "the sunshine is comin' through...for this country."

The candidate has drawn some of his largest audiences to date in the days following his strong debate performance against President Obama. He told the audience that he had "enjoyed" the experience, while getting in a dig at Obama.

"You all had the chance to hear his answers, or his non-answers," Romney said as the crowd roared its approval. "Now, of course, days later we are hearing his excuses, and next January we'll be watching him leave the White House for the last time."

Continuing a theme from the Wednesday night debate, Romney presented himself as a pragmatic, bipartisan alternative to the president.

"I commit to you this, I will do everything in my power to draw on that greatness of the American people," Romney said, with his wife Ann by his side. "To make us more united as a people. To have us pull together. To reach across the aisle and find good Democrats in the House and the Senate that care deeply about America, just as I do. I know they're there."

The former Massachusetts governor's debate performance has been widely viewed as a rhetorical move from the right to the center of the political spectrum. He spoke positively about his Massachusetts health care plan, championed Medicare, said some regulations are necessary in a free market, vowed to work with Democrats, and said that while he would not raise taxes on poor and middle income Americans, he would also not reduce the tax burden on the wealthiest Americans.

Romney's pledges to "reach across the aisle" echo the promises made by George W. Bush and President Obama in their 2000 and 2008 campaigns, respectively. Both presidents found the goal hard to reach in a polarized capital. Romney's debate statements about having worked with Democrats in Massachusetts, meanwhile, have been challenged.

While conceding that Romney came out on top at the first of three presidential debates, the Obama campaign has focused its post-debate attacks on Romney's truthfulness.

On "Face the Nation," top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod offered Romney mock praise for a "Gantry-esque performance" -- a reference to Elmer Gantry, Sinclair Lewis's book about an unethical evangelist -- and accused him of "serially rewriting history."

"It was completely unrooted in fact," Axelrod said of Romney's turn on the debate stage. "It was completely unrooted in the position he's taken before, and he spent 90 minutes trying to undo two years of campaigning."

The dems have always been willing to work with and compromise with the other side. It's the GOP that doesn't play well with others. Romney may have shifted to the center in Massachusetts but he still did a job on the state. Left us over 47th in job creation, over 2 billion in debt and he raised fees big time (not taxes, mind you, fees) 2 cents a gallon on gas, Driver's license fees went from $25 to $75, etc. Romney shifts position more than a weathervane in a hurricane!

Does he believe that the far-right might not notice him slippling around, or perhaps he thinks they will keep their eyes on Ryan???

He believes the far-right will get all their information from Fox and Limbaugh and they'll never find out about his shifting positions.

Yep, Romney is so centrist he picked Paul Ryan a devotee of atheist russian philosopher Ayn Rand. Her beliefs are every man/woman for themself and if hardships befall you, you are on your own with NO HELP from government. Ryan's budget reflects her philosophy. So much so that the catholic bishops and nuns came down on Ryan as a catholic, stating his budget punishes the least agmonst us (poor, elderly.

Ryan in fact favors the philosophy of atheist Ayn Rand over the teachings of Jesus.

I trust nothing with a (R)=Republican associated with it. Their record proves they will lie without apology and cannot be trusted to work to benefit ordinary Americans. Republicans have shown a vote for republicans and Romney/Ryan is a vote for corporations, big oil, big pharma and the super rich and against yourself if you are not in the one percent.

Americans are fools if they think this change in promises (that is meant to garner votes) is anything more than a ploy to win the election, and the message will go back to what it originally was once he wins. Use your heads people. These are campaign promises, and we all know how reliable they are.

Mitt Romney is different. Mitt Romney tells lies as naturally as he breathes. His entire campaign is constructed of lies. His entire identity is constructed of lies. Mitt Romney wouldn't find the truth if given a map, a compass, GPS and professional guides, because Mitt Romney isn't even interested in finding the truth.

No to Romney for President - of anything.

I think Obama knows he's done, and is just getting as much money as he can while he is still the "chosen one." Why else would he leave swing states to pander for money? It makes no sense. I would hope voters in those states recognize that California money is more important to him than understanding what swing state voters want from a candidate.

Romney raises taxes on the middle class and proposes going to war in Iran while insulting the allies who helped us in the gulf and Afghanistan. On the tax issue "Romney brags that he didn't raise taxes in Massachusetts even though the state budget faced a $3 billion budget gap when he took office. It is true; he didn't. Instead he proposed, and the legislature accepted, dozens of increases on state fees.
Marriage licenses went from $4 to $50. The cost of registering deeds and mortgages quadrupled ($25 to $100) and driving permits doubled to $30. Romney also proposed raising the firearms registration fee from $25 to $75." (From the Associated Press) He raised taxes and called it fees. Somewhere in the area of 35 million dollars in additional taxes, that mostly harmed the middle class in Massachusetts. Now he says he will end Medicare and replace it with a voucher system so you can buy insurance, and pay rich insurance companies, replace social security with a plan tied to the stock and bond market eliminate veterans benefits and replace them with a voucher system. I think the only people who will benefit from these items are the banks brokers and insurance companies and the rich which will receive an additional 20% tax break beyond what exists presently. According to Romney campaign statistics, since the beginning of the Obama recovery act, over 2 million jobs have been created, unemployment has steadily decreased from over 10% to 7.8%, the stock market is up 75% from almost 8000 13600, and both Bush wars are ending. This economic recovery .occurring in spite of republican opposition. Given those Romney campaign statistics, it looks like Romney is campaigning for Obama.

You should be on the Obama campaign debate team, excellent post. Same thing is going on in NY, we are facing double and triple fees and fees on fees for fees. That's the new secret tax. Seems to me President Obama ought to be doing research into his term as MA governor. Somethng tells me his OctoberSurprise will coming in the near future because President Obama got his.
