Obama camp rakes in biggest fundraising haul of the cycle
The Obama campaign announced Saturday on Twitter its biggest fundraising number of the campaign cycle - $181 million, brought in by Obama for America and the Democratic National Committee in September.
That brings the total tally, including money from Super PACs, to the edge of $1 billion.
While it was long thought that the Obama campaign would reach that milestone during this cycle, back in December campaign manager Jim Messina tried to tamp down billion-dollar expectations, going as far as to say in a campaign video, "People have speculated this is a billion dollar campaign - that's bull****."
But after this month's haul, in a thankful email to supporters, Messina wrote, "Day in and day out, what gives the President confidence and inspiration is knowing that you have his back - that matters. We're all going to do the best we can over next 31 days to honor that support."
In total, the campaign says it has passed 10 million donations from 3,922,420 people. This month, 1,825,813 gave money; 567,000 of those were new, small donors.
It's not an all-time record for the Obama team, but it comes close. Four years ago, in September 2008, the campaign brought in $193 million.
Mitt Romney's campaign has not yet announced its September fundraising haul, but has released the amount it raised in the 48 hours after Wednesday's debate: $12 million dollars online, which, according to the campaign, surpasses online donations made after Paul Ryan was announced as Romney's running mate.

There is NO law that says media has to be unbiased. That has been so ever since newspapers fanned the flames of independence during our Revolutionary War, and supported the ratification of the new US Constitution by publishing Thomas Payne's "Federalist Papers."
Most newspapers, even today, have a political point of view.
There is NOTHING in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution that says anything about media bias. In fact, it says the opposite. It says that "the press" has the freedom to say whatever they want, be it supportive or critical of the government.
When television replaced newspapers as the major media, nothing changed.
Most "responsible" media -- while having their own political viewpoint -- will allow dissenters to comment. This is why even "liberal" newspapers will publish letters to the editors from "conservative" readers who disagree with the paper's political leanings.
And this is why CBSNews doesn't suppress comments by Rush-bots here.
There also ARE some media that are proud to say that they remain bias-free. (Of course most of those are on PBS, which is why Romney is in such a hurry to de-fund them.) "Private" media must "pay the bills." And they -- for the most part -- do that either through subscriber fees (you don't pay any to read articles here or to post here) or by advertising revenue.
And, let's face it folks, zinging headlines create more attention, which means more exposure for the advertisers.
So, as often as it's been pointed out, if you don't like the obvious Democratic leaning of CBSNews, don't read it! Don't comment here! Find a right-wing site where you agree with everything, and stay there!!
Obama has been receiving small donations from thousands of people.
Romney has been receiving multi-million dollar donations from a few people. And, by now, most of those have reached the donation limit and cannot donate any more.
So he's scrambling for donations from the "little people", most of which -- between Ann's "you people" comment and his "47%" speech -- he's managed to totally alienate.

And everyone in Congress on up is in permanent campaign mode, so won't actually DO anything.
Britain has a 6-week campaign cycle. High time we had one, too.
