(AP) ST. LOUIS -- Republican Congressman Todd Akin is highlighting his Christian faith while asking for help in reviving his Senate campaign.

A fundraising appeal sent Wednesday by Akin notes that he has asked both God and voters to forgive him for saying women's bodies can block pregnancy in cases of what he called "legitimate rape."

Obama: Akin "somehow missed science class"
Defiant Akin, in Senate race for now, chides "party bosses" for trying to push him out
Sources: Akin may not really be in race for good

Akin is continuing his Missouri campaign despite enormous party pressure to drop his challenge of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

In the appeal, Akin writes that the media, "Washington elites" and "party bosses" are all against him.

Kerry Messer, president of the Missouri Family Network, says the controversy has united grass-roots Republicans around Akin, who has long been a favorite among home-schooling organizations and conservative church groups.

Messer says, "We need to prove that he really is our candidate, and this is not a decision for someone outside Missouri to make for us."

Akin's flying of the "Christian Flag" says a lot more about his twisted interpretation of a benign religion than it does about Christianity. Christ Himself wouldn't recognise the Christianity as practised by Mr. Akin if He stumbled over it in broad daylight.

I am not sure I could have said it better, Mike. By Akin's selfish and unthinking actions, he might influence the ultimate makeup of the houses of congress to the extent that the country's future is jeopardized. Akin needs to disappear!!!

What Akin has done is the simple act of flying the true Republican flag for all to see, and now you want him to quit? The king is naked and you want us to believe he has clothes? The Grand Old Party of nothing but hypocrites.
