Obama: Attack at Sikh temple assails religion

(AP) WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says an attack at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin is an assault on religious faith and has no place in the United States.

He says such an attack "is an attack on the freedom of all Americans." He says no American should ever have to fear worshipping in public.

Obama spoke at a White House dinner he hosted Friday night to celebrate the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

Obama singled out Huma Abedin (HOO'-muh AB'-uh-deen), an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton who is Muslim. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has alleged that Abedin has family ties to Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Obama called Abedin "an American patriot" and "an example of what we need in this country."

How did religion get involved in all of this? Yes, it was at a Sikh place of worship, but seems to me the perp was always talking about a race war. It is ridiculous and a complete stretch to use this as a platform for religious freedom.

LET SAY IT AGAIN--The reason this man did this is NOT because he is 'Nuts' but some other reason we don't know about right now. His experience means he KNEW this was not a Muslim site so drop that reason. I was on duty in Ft. Sill the same time he was but can not say I meet him. He worked in the Psyco Ward. This is the place they also deal with Alcoholic misuse and Drug misuse ONLY ONE TIME. Reason is because at the time, the second misuse you would be discharged as undesirable or use of the term General. I hope a very deep background check is done to see WHY he made this attack.

These killings, not unlike Aurora, Tucson, Oklahoma City, Virginia Tech, 9/11, etc. have a lot less to do with religion or politics and more to do with nameless, faceless, losers who were desperately seeking notoriety. No more, no less.

It is Corporate free enterprise that is stiffleing jobs and opportunity, not President Obama.
Have you forgotten that the country was much better off before when the rich actually paid there fair share of taxes, and corporations were producing goods in the US?

Obama assails religion. He thinks he can define what a religious institution is and forces religious people to go against their beliefs.

That's why he's President.
Religion is a tool.
It's in the constitution he doesn't need to define it.
We know that religion was the basis for invading America.
Ask any native that met the "settlers".
We also know that was before the country was founded, and in the constitution no religion will be established by the state.
Therefore the seperation between church and state is obvious.
Keep RELIGION OUT OF POLITICS.

But religious people already do "go against their beliefs!" When nearly everyone already uses contraception, it's a made up issue. The church needs to accept that their followers ignore their so called objection to birth control. Women want to control when they have a child. That's not gonna change because the church tells them to spin the wheel and take a chance.

No he didn't, he is protecting womens' rights.
Religion does not dictate policy anymore.

Looks like the same guy who assailed religion himself when he insisted a Catholic institution's insurance policy cover contraceptives in violation of their beliefs. Never let a good crisis go to waste, right Mr President?

Thank you Ulgnud for expressing my same thoughts. The assailant has re-invented himself! Give him time.......in a few weeks he'll be in Haifa claiming to have Jewish ancestry and by October he'll be in Pascagoula Miss. claiming to be have Southern Baptist roots.

The killings in Wisconsin has more to do on the look of the people than the religion. I do not believe this redneck knew much about Sikhism just like most Americans. Had this person known about Sikhism, I am quite sure then he would not have carried out this action. I also understand that we need to have a uniform alternative to religion, because regardless of what these religions teach, somehow, they end up corrupting minds to do unthinkable things on the name of religion. Sikhism is no immune to this either. I also believe that there do not exist Sikhs who follow the real teachings of gurus. The present day Sikhs are more political than religious, but that does not give anyone the right to carryout the actions that this man carried out. We need to start integrating in societies where we live so that we can start building bridges of understanding among ourselves. I hope this horrible incident helps provide an education about minorities that are living in USA. Believe me, USA can not afford to have armed minorities with guns.

Yes. It is classic white supremacy. Not an attack on religion per se.

People constantly attack religion as being a source of violence. I wonder how many criminals on death row are athiests. I wonder how many serial killers, rapists, and child molesters believe in a hell in an afterlife. I could be wrong, but people without any sort of faith in anything tend to be the most violent and sadistic of the lot. Well, unless you walk into a Baptist church and start insulting God...

And once again... bioluminescence, electric eels, chamelions, Sho'Lin monks breaking stones, twins doing the freaky things they do, the Placebo effect, Kirlian photography, cancer vanishing, and the simplest bacterium we know having 600,000 DNA pairs, all point to spirituality and "intelligent design". Also, God will be happy to kill you all just like he did the people in Sodom. God will kick your ass worse than those baptists will.

It's religion and "the murder-and-die-for" religious mindsets,

Please humans, find a substitute for religion.

Even God is fed up with warped religious mentality!
