Romney says he'll only release 2 tax returns

(AP) LACONIA, N.H. - Likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney says he'll only release to the public one more tax return — and not until his accountants complete it.

Romney tells CNN he's complied with the law by filing a financial disclosure statement.

Romney so far has released one complete tax filing, for 2010, along with an estimate for 2011. He filed for an extension for his 2011 tax return.

What was Romney's role at Bain during outsourcing?
Romney: Obama owes me an apology

Democrats are accusing Romney of being secretive and taking advantage of tax loopholes that aren't available to average Americans. The former Massachusetts governor has also come under attack for accounts he has held in Switzerland, the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.

Romney's fortune is estimated at $250 million. The bulk of it comes from Bain Capital and the return on investments from the company.

Gee, Gov. Romney, when you wanted John McCain to choose you as his VP candidate in 2008, you handed over 23 years of tax returns. Now you want me and 118 other American citizens to elect you president, but you're only going to let us see ONE tax return now and another when you get it finished (like over Labor Day or Columbus Day weekend)? Why doesn't that make sense to me?

This is the dumbest thing Romney has ever done. Hundreds of thousands of voters will assume the worst

The proof that he actually did continue to manage Bain Capital after 1999, is in those tax returns...

Can't the republican party find a candidate that is at least semi-electable material.
After a year of this primary crap, all I've heard is "9-9-9", "Oops" and now this Romney garbage of releasing only one year of his tax returns.
At least when McCain ran for President he released 30 years of his past tax returns.
It's a Presidential election year, come on GOP get with the program.

Thank you. The GOP is imploding, and I think primarily because of the radical right whose approval a candidate needs. Eisenhower couldn't get nominated today.

Being the political guy that he is, Willard is undoubtedly aware of the avalanche of criticism and political blowback he will get from hiding his tax returns. The criticism will keep growing and growing. So, obviously, the only reason he's hiding them is that the contain something extremely damaging, probably something that would end his campaign. We've already seen his fondness for shady offshore investments and bank accounts, tax shelters, dummy corporations, and bogus deductions for a "Dancing Horse." I imagine that is only the tip of the iceberg -- the iceberg that he's trying to keep hidden, at least until after the election.

This is precisely why he won't: the presumption that he must have done something wrong, followed rapidly by the Obama campaign's patented insinuations and outright lies. If there was anything illegal in his returns, don't you think the IRS would be all up in his business already? It's not like he's Deadbeat Geitner.

You have it all wrong. Disclosure to the IRS is one thing. Later on, making a statement about your finances to the Federal Election Commission that is at odds with what you told the IRS is quite another. That is where the danger lies for Romney.

A further danger is that while he told the IRS the truth, the tax returns may reveal that he has been lying to the American public about his activities with Bain and possibly other overseas investments.

This is starting to sound more and more like Squirmy Hermy Cain.

"I'm innocent."

"I don't want to talk about that."

"I'd not dignifying that with an answer."

"Ummm, errrrr, I'm suspending my campaign."

I wonder how long it's going to be before the Republican Party starts pressuring him to bow out. At any rate, the Republican National Convention will be very interesting this year.

Willard wants to run the country - but he can't even get his own personal tax return done on time. Really Mitt? What are you hiding? I realize your return is complicated, but as a small business owner, so is mine - and I don't have an army of tax accountants working on mine like you do, and I still get it done on time. Why can't you? Waiting for a holiday weekend to release it are you?
