Schieffer: All religions share one truth

Although humankind has been haggling over the details for eons, to me all religions are basically true, at least the western religions that I know about - and the truth they share is that love is more powerful than hate and that we'll be happier if we treat others with fairness.

I have no answers to the questions humans have debated from the beginning: "If there is a God, why does he let bad things happen to good people?" And "Where does evil come from?" I have no idea.

My answer to most religious assertions is, "Perhaps."

Yet, I am a believer. I have always thought - maybe felt is a better word - that there was something out there more powerful than we are, but so powerful it is beyond human comprehension.

I think that when I see the beauty of a sunset, or the pure innocence in a baby's smile, or recognize the things we can't see: a mother's love or the strength that we can sometimes find deep within us when all seems lost.

To me those are the miracles. Maybe they're not.

But when I think of them in that way, it always gives me hope and makes me happier.

Neutron radiation is invisible and can not be pinpointed. Electrons are invisible and can not be pinpointed. Black holes are invisible and can not be pinpointed. All of these are nevertheless real. As far as you spending your life on your knees, God says "Every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. You can either do it now or on the other side when it won't count.

jjg777; That is the worst thing about religion.

Over my entire lifetime, most especially when I was a child. Every preacher in every church, on television, or over the air, and now on the Internet has used impossible promises (eternal life and happiness) to convert the gullible, and fear (hell fire) to scare those who question into submission. And in almost every instance it is solely to gain money/power. Or, in some instances, by those who are so frightened by the logic of those who disagree that they desperately try to keep defending their illogically claims

Ever stop to think, if there is a God, why do we need faith? Why doesn't God speak to us? Communicate in some way? Facebook? Twitter? Go on Leno? Write in the sky? Make an appearance somewhere, somehow? How about updating that book of yours, it's almost 2000 years old - surely a revision is due by now?

We can see millions of light years away, but not one God, ever, has been seen by anyone. We continue to eat away at the explanations using science at things a God used to get credit for. We don't accept sickness being caused by demons or stars being windows into heaven. No one walks on water anymore, no more people being raised from the dead.

Maybe - just maybe - those supernatural beliefs of 2000 years ago are outdated by now? Maybe you believe them because you were told they were true? Science requires proof - if you believe in religious superbeings, why don't you?

Mortals do not get to judge the divine God. God says in his bible

"Without faith it is impossible to please God." Now that is God's standard not mine.

As far as communicating with us he has spoken by his bible, by his SON, and by the prophets. That is all he is going to do so as a mortal you either accept it or not.

As far as an update for the Bible it was directed by God and it does not need an update.

Science is way behind the Bible and needs an update. The most recent update of science that was behind the bible was the fact that the Bible says that "God streches out the Heavens like a curtain." That statement is thousands of years old. On the other hand, man only discovered that the Universe is expanding in 1929 ala Hubble.

Another needed science update is the origin of man. No body has proven that man originated from APES and they will never. See my post below about 10 down regarding many scientist who now doubt Darwin.

Another scientific musing that needs to be changed in Stephen Hawkings claims that the universe came from nothing. When have you sat at a junk yard and seen everything come to gether to form anything useful with out a creator.

A San Diego man was arrested Saturday for allegedly slashing his young son's forearms at a cemetery after "voices in his head" instructed him to sacrifice the boy.

Joseph Ramirez, 30, took three of his children to the Mount Hope Cemetery about 4:30 p.m. local time where he used a knife to slice his 8-year-old's forearms before cutting his own, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

"We're going to Jesus, we're going to Jesus," the dad was overheard saying by witness Jaymisha Pires.

Pires, a 21-year-old mother of two, said she confronted Ramirez and begged him to stop.

When Ramirez ran off, Pires' friend, Corey Granberry, pulled the children together. The 8-year-old child was bleeding badly and Granberry wrapped a T-shirt around one of his arms.

According to the Union-Tribune, Ramirez had heard his dead grandmother's voice telling him to sacrifice his son.

Pointing out a spelling error will not change the truth of the statement. Truth is hard to defend against. Thomas Jefferson was one of many "founding fathers." If there is a GOD (and his name is Lord Jesus) he will not be impressed that he was your model. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were a profoundly intelligent, religious and ethically-minded group. Four of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were current or former full-time preachers, and many more were the sons of clergymen. Other professions held by signers include lawyers, merchants, doctors and educators. These individuals, too, were for the most part active churchgoers and many contributed significantly to their churches both with contributions as well as their service as lay leaders. The signers were members of religious denominations at a rate that was significantly higher than average for the American Colonies during the late 1700s.

These signers have long inspired deep admiration among both secularists (who appreciate the non-denominational nature of the Declaration) and by traditional religionists (who appreciate the Declaration's recognition of God as the source of the rights enumerated by the document). Lossing's seminal 1848 collection of biographies of the signers of the Declaration of Independence echoed widely held sentiments held then and now that there was divine intent or inspiration behind the Declaration of Independence. Lossing matter-of-factly identified the signers as "instruments of Providence" who have "gone to receive their reward in the Spirit Land."

It is interesting to note that this article has been on the front-page comment section at this site for three weeks and has accumulated over 380 comments.
It is also interesting to note that ALL of the theist's comments are based in their belief that the bible is a book of facts, rather than a compilation of the many religious sermons that were prepared in advance by traveling preachers/prophets for preaching to their congregations. Which, in effect, is like saying; What I'm saying is the truth and if you don't believe me, just ask me.

More frequently their responses to comments based on pure logical facts, descend into personal insults or name-calling. (Not very Christian behavior).

They often use writings they may have found to make their point like the following comment:
"Let me point out that evolution, though Darwin polished it off, was actually first propounded by an ancient pagan Greek philosopher named Axinander (Eerdmans' Handbook to the History of Christianity, hdbk ed., p. 538)."

While ignoring other things like:
Almost everything Jesus supposedly did was done (sometimes centuries earlier) by Greek/Roman, gods/men like; Walking on water; turning water into wine; bringing back the dead, and more.

Did any of them raise themselves from the dead? Did any of them start a world wide revival that claims that 10,000 years from now the believers will still be in Heaven? Did any of them claim to be the only begotten Son of God?

There is no other name by which men must be saved but Jesus Christ!

IT IS UP TO ACCEPT HIM OR LEAVE HIM. I PRAY THAT YOU ACCEPT HIM.

Yes, the Greek god, Zeus impregnated the mortal body of Semele......... (amazingly like what happened to Jesus's mother Mary, only this also happened long before Jesus' supposed divine birth).
Zeus then rescued the body of Dionysus (his son) and stitched him into his thigh until he was old enough to be born, thereby conferring immortality upon him,

Later, Dionysus was resurrected a second time after being ripped to pieces by the Titans.
