Channing Says 'Goodbye, Hubby!'
Gentlemen may prefer blondes, but Carol Channing's husband apparently didn't prefer her.
The 77-year-old actress has filed for divorce from Charles Lowe, claiming that he had sex with her only twice during their 41-year marriage.
The 20-page petition by Channing, best known for her roles in Hello Dolly! and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles District Court, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
According to court papers, Channing said that shortly after she and Lowe wed in 1956, he informed her that he was impotent, the Post said.
Channing claims that during their marriage, Lowe, 86, regularly humiliated her in public and that he has physically assaulted her.
She also said that Lowe, her second husband, had set up his own production company early in their marriage and funneled all her earnings into his accounts.
A recent three-year tour of Hello Dolly! netted the actress $5 million, she said, but her accountants told her she had only $2 million in her bank account.
"This is a major tragedy in my life, and I've finally gathered up enough courage to come forward," Channing told the Post. "I hope this will serve as an inspiration to younger women who may be in the same situation and have their whole life in front of them."
Lowe, who lives in the Los Angeles area, could not be reached for comment Tuesday, the Post said.
