Pale hues, blues and pinks colored the red carpet of the 85th annual Academy Awards on Sunday night in Los Angeles, with some of the hottest looks coming from Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Lawrence and Reese Witherspoon.

"It was a fantastic red carpet. One of the best ones yet," Emmy Award-winning stylist David Zyla told CBSNews.com.

Louis Vuitton and Armani Prive were the standout designers, according to Zyla. "Zero Dark Thirty" star Jessica Chastain was among the stars who chose Armani Prive, and Witherspoon's blue dress was designed by Louis Vuitton.

Read on to find out the other trends that emerged on the red carpet of this year's Oscars:

The Color Purple

"We saw some very unusual versions of it," said Zyla about purple.

Jennifer Garner wore the most intense purple hue with her Gucci gown. But there were other shades of the color, too. Amy Adams donned an Oscar de la Renta lilac-smoked dress with ruffles, and Amanda Seyfried sported an Alexander McQueen lilac-hinted halter beaded gown.

Color Me Navy and Blue

Blue made its way onto the Oscars red carpet with Witherspoon's strapless Louis Vuitton gown, complete with a black-ribbon. "She looked gorgeous," said Zyla, author of "Color Your Style: How to Wear Your True Colors."

Performer Jennifer Hudson donned a navy gown, too. "Jennifer Hudson looked beautiful in a dress that was very conservative in its cut but the fit looked so good on her," Zyla said of Hudson's Roberto Cavalli Couture dress.

The blue trend also carried over to 9-year-old actress Quvenzhane Wallis, who wore a blue Armani Junior princess dress.

Pretty in Pink

Shades of pink also dominated the red carpet on Sunday, with Anne Hathaway donning a pink silk Prada gown. "Jennifer Lawrence looked beautiful in that blush Dior dress," added Zyla.

Feast of Metallics

Several stars opted for metallic shades. "The freshest looking metallic was gunmetal," said Zyla.

Naomi Watts sported the look with her Armani Pervi asymmetrical gown. "It was a very tricky dress to wear, but she wore it beautifully," said Zyla. Melissa McCarthy also sported the trend, as did Stacey Keibler.

Stars, including Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Nicole Kidman, dressed in gold for the event.

Pales and Creams

Pales and creams were everywhere, too.

"I think this is so beautiful when we're thinking about spring," said Zyla, who pointed out Chastain's "toasted peach" Armani Prive gown, one of his favorite looks of the night. "It was a winner," he said.

Queen Latifah and Charlize Theron both chose white for the evening.

All the Rest

Among the other trends we saw was the "modern bow," as seen on Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Strapless looks were huge on the red carpet this year, as was the "strong shoulder," said Zyla.

As for hair, the soft up-do was big, with Seyfried and Lawrence among those donning the style. "It seemed effortless," Zyla said. "It was something that made the ladies look naturally beautiful."

And lastly, who could ignore the backwards necklace?

"I think every woman tomorrow is going to be turning their necklace around and wearing it backwards," said Zyla, noting Lawrence's look of the night.

Hard to pick a favorite, but it's safe to say the tall statuesque ladies stole the show. Nicole Kidman, Stacey Kiebler, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Hudson were all absolutely stunning. I think it's more difficult for shorter women to pull off wearing evening gowns as many appeared to be dragging the ground. So good to see Robin Givens beaming smile in a beautiful flowing blue gown. Selma Hayek looked so regal with her upswept hairstyle and metallic choker style neckline. I'm not a big fan of pastels at formal events such as the Oscars as they seem more suited to a high school prom. Also not a big fan of bright red lipstick on fair skinned women with reddish hair color as it makes them appear too harsh. Jane Fonda continues to defy age, but would have preferred to see her in any other color but yellow, which is a very difficult shade for so many women to pull off. Always love to see a beautiful pregnant woman make an appearance in a tasteful, beautiful gown as the one worn by Georgina Chapman. Hate to ignore the entirely, but when George Clooney is in the house, there is no one who can come close. He is the Cary Grant of my generation.
