It's official: "How I Met Your Mother" is coming back -- and coming to an end.

CBS announced Wednesday that it has renewed the sitcom for a ninth and final season.

All series regulars -- Josh Radnor, Jason Segel, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan, as well as series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas - are set to return, the network added, and viewers will finally get to meet the "Mother" of the show's title.

"Through eight years, 'How I Met Your Mother' has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases," CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler. "We are excited for Carter, Craig, Pam Fryman and this amazing cast to tell the final chapter and reveal television's most mysterious mother to some of TV's most passionate fans."

"We're thrilled to have the entire and incredibly talented 'How I Met Your Mother' cast back for one final season to bring the series to a proper close," added Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen of 20th Century Fox Television. "Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are masterful and hilarious storytellers, and we have no doubt that they will guide one of the greatest comedies of the last decade to a gratifying conclusion when they finally reveal the identity of the Mother."

Reports of the show's return first surfaced in December.

"How I Met Your Mother" airs Monday nights at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.

If you don't like the show then change the channel no one is holding a gun to your head to watch this show! And I don't care about your crappy opinion if you think the show is tired. I love this show and I am so sad that this will be the final season. I have all the DVD's and I just can't believe it is going to be over!! WHY? You have so many die hard fans who love this show and watch it every season. I just don't get it? why so I can watch some stupid show about fake doctors or some revenge made up crap. This show is real it is equal to friends to me. I guess I will just have to watch the reruns on TV just like friends...

I only watched the first three episodes, but couldn't get what the actual plot was. I know I am one of the few as popular as it is.

This show is not "tired" or "dead" It has reached its climax and the ultimate question-which people still care about- is yet to be answered. If you don't care about this show anymore then don't bother commenting on its article. This show has touched the hearts of millions and this news is meant for the true fans who stick with it throughout its course.

if they have barney come out of the closet ... and admit his womanizing was all just a front to cover his closet homosexuality ... i'll be able to believe him in the role he's in ... and maybe start watching.

it's not clear what 'leading edge' they're actually on ... but i suppose it looks that way if you're the creator/producer.

Can CBS beat another season out of this dead horse? Two and a half men should have gone away five years ago. Is there no new ideas left in television? I watch CBS every night but even I am looking elsewhere.

Why???? The show is so tired. Nobody cares who the mother is anymore, and their scripts are so derivative I can't bare to watch it in syndication--I turn the channel.

What they should do is have a spin-off with the two children, now that sounds interesting. They can call it, "How much Mother means to Us."
