Memorial donations can be made to the Society of Singers or the Grammy Foundation.

Page died in Encinitas, Calif., her rep said in a statement sent to CBSNews.com. Page is survived by her son, Daniel O'Curran, daughter Kathleen Ginn and sister Peggy Layton.

The top-selling female singer of the 1950s, Page sold more than 100 million records. Among them were "Tennessee Waltz" and "(How Much Is That) Doggie in the Window."

In September, the Oklahoma native updated her website, detailing her medical condition and her decision to stop performing: "I never really kept track but I am told that I've recorded over one thousand songs on more albums than I can remember. Live performances all over the world gave me the chance to meet so many fans who found joy in what came very naturally to me. For all that I am truly grateful."

"Over the past year and a half I have not focused on performance or recording but have been more attentive to the doctors, nurses and thoughtful caregivers who have been helping me face several medical challenges," she continued. "Throughout my life I never really gave much thought to my senior years. I was always able to hop on a plane, go out on stage and make music with the band. At this point I am no longer able to do that."

Patti Page has a worldwide fan base. Of course there are those who have no idea who she was/is. I didn't know anything about the group "One Direction" until my granddaughter shared her CDs with me. Patti has thrilled millions for more than 60 years. It is almost unheard of for any performer to do concerts for that many years without a break. Even though most of the million seller hits came in the 50s, Patti continued to have hits in Japan, Spain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Korea, etc throughout the 60s.
Her first 40,000,000 records were sold in the 50s but the 60,000,000 plus that were sold to come up with her total of more than 100 million sold, occurred in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s. Patti was presented with the 100 million award at her Carnegia Hall concert in 1997. The CD of that performance won her her first grammy award. She'd amassed many awards prior to that. Patti charted from 1948 through 1982 on the Billboard charts alone. She'd been nominated for an Emmy for The Big Record but didn't win. Since Joel Whitburn has compiled the music charts from Music Vendor/Record World magazines to go along with the Billboard and Cashbox chart data......we now know that Patti had nearly 150 chart records and that is in the USA alone. She was one of America's premiere music ambassadors the world over as she appeared in Japan, Hong Kong, England, etc, etc. Long live her wonderful voice and her great accomplishments.

What a beautiful, creative soul we've lost. I was so saddened to hear of the singer's death and even a little sadder when I realized there are so many people anymore who don't know it was Page who sang "Doggie in the Window" (and "Doggie in the Shelter" as I just learned from the above comment). When I was looking online for more news about her death, I saw that many of the celebrity death lists didn't even have her listed for recognition. I added her to one of the lists at www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/celebrity-death-pool-2013 so her contributions will hopefully be seen by some others unaware of her tremendous body of work.

A few years ago, Patti re-recorded "Doggie in the Window" and changed the words to "Do You See That Doggie in the Shelter?" to promote the adoption of pound pups instead of buying puppy mill dogs from pet stores: http://www.ilovedogs.com/2013/01/rip-patti-page-singer-re-recorded-doggie-in-the-window-to-promote-pound-pups/. I think she'd love it if people would donate to their local shelter in her memory, or adopt a pound pup in her honor. RIP, lovely lady.
