After word got out on Tuesday, the singer confirmed the news with a website post titled "Countdown to Touchdown," featuring a photo of her face, along with the text "Feb. 13 2013," the date of the upcoming Super Bowl. Earlier, a source told The Associated Press the Grammy-winning singer will take the stage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

The 31-year-old sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 in her hometown of Houston when the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers.

Madonna's halftime show

Last year, there were reports suggesting that Madonna would play Super Bowl half-time, and weeks later it was confirmed. She ended up taking the half-time stage in February with guests Cee Lo Green, Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and M.I.A. The New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in a thrilling rematch of the contest four years earlier. Her performance was seen by 114 million people, a higher average than the game itself, which was seen by an estimated 111.3 million people, according to the Nielsen Co.

If Beyonce's performance at the Pepsi NFL Halftime Show features collaborations, it could likely include husband-rapper Jay-Z and her Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams.

New Orleans last hosted a Super Bowl in 2002, making next year's game the first NFL championship in the city since Hurricane Katrina devastated parts of the Louisiana Superdome in 2005. Pepsi is returning as the sponsor for the halftime show since doing so in 2007 when Prince performed. Other recent performers have included The Who and Bruce Springsteen.

Why Beyonce? Does ESPN really think football fans want to hear Beyounce? What a waste of what could have been a real show. I'll tune out. Thanks.

Beyonce is blacklisted as a sinner by Obama that he doesn't want his children to ape her.

Well, I didn't want to see her in the hospital room so why would I want to see her now? The only difference is, it was impossible to rent the entire floor of the stadium... what wasteful spending based on a myth... they'd make good politicians, Beyonce and her hubby... :-S

Halftime will be spent looking for something else to watch, or an extended time making a sandwich etc. In other words, I won't waste my time watching the half time circus. Thank you
