The fourth season of "The Vampire Diaries" kicked off Thursday night and viewers' questions about Elena's (Nina Dobrev) fate after last season's finale were answered in an emotional episode.
Last season left viewers wanting to know: Did Elena complete her transition and become a vampire?
(Spoiler Alert)
In the season premiere, Elena wakes up from her terrible accident with both Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) by her side. Stefan struggles with the guilt that Elena will wake up as a vampire, something that she never wanted, but it was the only way that he could save her.
They turn to Bonnie (Kat Graham) to look for a way out of their decision with spells, but it doesn't work and Elena is left to struggle through her transition, which makes her sensitive to light and nauseous at the sight of food.
But the symptoms of being a vampire weren't all terrible, Elena starts to remember things that she was forced to forget, most notably the night Damon told her he loved her and then erased her memory of the moment. Soon, Elena wonders if she made the right decision choosing Stefan over Damon.
After more attempts by Bonnie to help, Elena is captured by the town council, along with Stefan and Rebekah (Claire Holt). Elena completes her transition while they are captured and suddenly gets the urge to feed. In the end, a guard is killed and she drinks the blood that spews out around him, coming to terms with her new life as a vampire.
