CERN physicists claim strongest evidence yet of Higgs boson - the "God particle"

(CBS/AP) GENEVA - One of the two independent teams at the world's biggest atom smasher said Wednesday it has found strong evidence of a new subatomic particle that looks like the one believed to give all matter in the universe size and shape.

Joe Incandela, leader of one of the teams known as CMS, told scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research, or CERN, that his team of 2,100 scientists has "observed" a new particle that is a boson — the same type of particle as the long-sought Higgs boson, popularly referred to as the "God particle."

He described the data as consistent with the elusive Higgs boson, whose existence was predicted decades ago to help explain how the universe works, but stopped short of definitively declaring discovery of the Higgs boson.

The second team was just starting to present its evidence before a packed auditorium, where scientists broke into applause intermittently.

Fabiola Gianotti, leader of the second team of some 3,000 scientists, known as ATLAS, said it also has observed some "beautiful" events in CERN's atom smasher, the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider on the Swiss-French border.

It has been creating high-energy collisions of protons to investigate dark matter, antimatter and the creation of the universe, which many theorize occurred in a massive explosion known as the Big Bang.

(Below, watch CBS' "60 Minutes" visit the Large Hadron Collider for a story broadcast in 2008)

The discovery of the Higgs boson won't change people's lives, but will help explain the underpinnings of the universe. It would confirm the standard model of physics that explains why fundamental particles have mass. Those particles are the building blocks of the universe. Mass is a trait that combines with gravity to give an object weight.

The phrase "God particle," coined by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman, is used by laymen, not physicists, more as an explanation for how the wonders of the subatomic universe work than how it all started.

This definition of New Thought / The New Thought Movement represents an excellenet summary from Wikipedia, and I agree wtih 98% of it. The other 2% - I believe that sickness can start in the mind and/or the body; not just the mind, and that "God" is a religous manufactured term and description of what is actually Infinite Intelligence, and therefore should be removed from the definition....

"New Thought promotes the ideas that "Infinite Intelligence" or "God" is ubiquitous, spirit is the totality of real things, true human selfhood is divine, divine thought is a force for good, sickness originates in the mind, and "right thinking" has a healing effect.[1][2]

Although New Thought is neither monolithic nor doctrinaire, in general modern day adherents of New Thought believe that "God" or "Infinite Intelligence" is "supreme, universal, and everlasting", that divinity dwells within each person, that all people are spiritual beings, that "the highest spiritual principle [is] loving one another unconditionally ... and teaching and healing one another", and that "our mental states are carried forward into manifestation and become our experience in daily living".[1][2]

The New Thought movement is a spiritually-focused or philosophical interpretation of New Thought beliefs. Started in the early 19th century, today the movement consists of a loosely allied group of religious denominations, secular membership organizations,[citation needed] authors, philosophers, and individuals who share a set of beliefs concerning metaphysics, positive thinking, the law of attraction, healing, life force, creative visualization, and personal power.[3] The three major religious denominations within the New Thought movement are Religious Science, Unity Church and the Church of Divine Science. There are many other smaller churches within the New Thought movement, as well as schools and umbrella organizations."

I find it amazing that some Tea Party Type Religious Dictator uses every occasion to promote a malevolent super being who exists to terrorize all of those who do not "fall into line" and allow those dictator types to rule our lives, bodies, and minds. The control of women's reproductive systems, access to birth control for our youth, and even the books used in our schools....are under constant attack from these self rightous, self justifying folks who pose as demi gods.

I agree that science rocks. It testifies to the glory of this created universe. Whether we gaze through an electron microscope or the Hubble telescope we are continually amazed at the wonders that we find. And the wonders are inexhaustible! Someone wrote that the heavens declare the glory of God. Night after night they pour forth speech and there is nowhere on earth where their voice is not heard. The infinite wisdom and glory of God has been manifestly displayed so that men are not left without the knowledge of God.

It seems that the scientific community has now become guilty of the very thing they accuse theists of and that is believing in a figment of their own imagination. "Think they have it"..."looks like it"..."pretty sure"...these are statements of faith and not scientific certainty. Golly they were even singing HYMNS!!!!! Better pass the bucket because the bills are piling up!

Watched the video of the announcement by the project director. Interestingly he said " As a LAYMAN I THINK we found it." He carefully made it clear that he was speaking not as an scientific authority but a guy on the street. Did not want to put his scientific credibility on the line. Other phrases like "looks like it" and "could be it" abound.

There seem to be some very insecure theist posting about this subject. Is it the name "God" particle that incites them? It's been around for some time. I think everyone's God or gods would most likely be pleased if their followers would just stop hitting each other over the head while they proclaim, "my god can beat up your god or lack of". Correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of a single case of science conceding to religion since the church declared war of Galileo.

Some of the comments on here amaze me. I am constantly amazed at those who would deride scientific exploration and discovery. Especially since they do this via the internet while sitting in their airconditioned houses. Talk about people in glass houses. :o)

Wow. Any psychologist would marvel at the Fear Of God which permeates your scientific discourses. The driving force of your passion is not so much scientific enlightenment but the obsession to disprove the existence of God - the very God which you claim to not believe in. Are you as threatened by other fictional characters as you are God? Fascinating. And very revealing I might add. In the Bible people saw the miraculous power of Jesus first hand and killed him. The glory of God is clearly seen in His creation so that all men are without excuse. But men suppress the truth and thinking themselves wise become fools. You have been exposed. Your innermost fears have been manifested. The existence of the elusive Higgs boson would only confirm the infinite wisdom and glory of the God of the Bible. If a primitive man was given a rolex watch and after a thousand years he was finally able to understand how it works would that disprove the fact that it was created?

Scientists do not have a fear of God. Some quite famous scientists, like Albert Einstein, are or we're devout believers. Even the atheistic scientists wouldn't say the study of the universe disproves the existence of God - they only say that He isn't a necessary condition.

More to the point, your comments show a fear of critical thinking, facts and logic if they conflict with your pre-existing beliefs. That's not demonstrating faith - just stupidity and close-mindedness.
