Suicide Bomber Targets Iraq Recruits, Kills 60

A suicide bomber blew himself up Tuesday among hundreds of army recruits who had gathered near a military headquarters in an attack officials said killed 60 and wounded 125, one of the bloodiest bombings in months in the Iraqi capital.

The massive strike just outside a major division headquarters and recruitment center is an embarrassment to Iraqi security forces and casts doubts on their ability to protect themselves and the nation just two weeks before all but 50,000 U.S. troops head home.

Iraqi military spokesman Maj. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi blamed al Qaeda in Iraq for enlisting the bomber, whose upper body he said was found at the scene of the blast.

Yasir Ali, who had been waiting outside the military headquarters since 4 a.m. with about 1,000 other hopeful recruits, said he saw the bomber, describing him as a blond young man. Ali said the bomber was sitting quietly among the recruits, then walked up to an officer collecting I.D. cards and blew himself up.

"Severed hands and legs were falling over me," said Ali said, adding he was about 54 feet away from the bomber. "I was soaked with blood from the body parts and wounded and dead people falling over and beside me."

Insurgents have threatened to step up attacks ahead of the U.S. troop departure and violence has increased in recent weeks. Iraqi army, police and other security forces have been targeted, but civilians also have been killed by the hundreds.

Tuesdays' blast took place around 7:30 a.m. outside the former Iraqi Ministry of Defense building that now houses the army's 11th division headquarters. The site receives about 250 new recruits each week as Iraqi security forces try to bolster their ranks to prepare for the U.S. military's looming withdrawal after seven years of war.

Bodies of young men, some still clutching job applications and other documents in their hands, could be seen scattered about at the blast site, which Iraqi soldiers closed off. U.S. helicopters hovered overhead as frantic Iraqis showed up to search for relatives.

At least two recruits who witnessed that attack raised the possibility that a car had also exploded at the scene, which could account for the high death toll. But al-Moussawi blamed the deaths on a single suicide bomber.

"We were sitting there, and somebody began shouting about a parked car," said one of the recruits, Ali Ibrahim, 21, who suffered minor shrapnel wounds in the blast. Ibrahim said he had been waiting to get into the headquarters to secure a job since around 3 a.m.

The recruits had been gathering, many of them since long before dawn, in an open and unprotected area next to Maidan Square in central Baghdad as they waited for hours to be allowed through the main gates of the headquarters in small groups, according to two Iraqi police officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. At least three soldiers were among the dead and eight among the wounded, the police officials said.

Officials at four Baghdad hospitals confirmed the casualties. All spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Al-Moussawi, the military spokesman, told The Associated Press that the blast was caused by a single suicide bomber who detonated his explosives vest among the packed crowd. He put the casualty count at 39 killed and 57 wounded. Varying casualty counts are common in the chaotic aftermath of attacks.

As many as 1,000 army recruits were gathered at the division headquarters, he added, because Tuesday was to be the last day for soldiers to sign up.

"We couldn't get another place for the recruits," al-Moussawi said. "It was difficult to control the area because it's an open area and because of the large number of recruits."

Iraqi security forces have been trying to boost their numbers as the U.S. military begins to leave the country. All but 50,000 U.S. troops will go home by the end of August, with the rest to follow by the end of 2011 under a security agreement between Baghdad and Washington.

This summer in particular has seen a spike in violence in Iraq. Data from the Iraqi defense, interior and ministry officials show that July marked the bloodiest month since May 2008, with more than 500 killed, although tallies compiled by The Associated Press and the U.S. military were lower.

In a similar attack last month, a suicide bomber ripped through a line of anti-al Qaeda Sunni fighters waiting to collect their paychecks near an Iraqi military base, killing 45 people in the mostly Sunni district of Radwaniya southwest of Baghdad.

August, which saw the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, has also been deadly. Two bombs that set off a power generator and ignited a fuel tank on Aug. 7. killed 43 people in a downtown market in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city.

More dead, not because of the terrorist but because of George Bush Alfred E. Newman leadership, command and strategy. It's only been 18 monthes for President Obama and the Majority party to handle the two Vietnams, the Corporate Oil Baron's puppets saw as an opportunity to secure their $trillions of their vast mid east assests. Bush created his first Vietnam as the Corporate Puppetiers pulled his strings hard. We all agree upon that. Bush created his second Vietnam, by using poor leadership, a terrible strategy and unwise speechs. He played his tune so sweet, but not to me but to Bin Ladin and his pack of dogs. They loved Bushes' tune, it was sweet. Schock and awe a hornets nest of non terrorist. Not only inflaming the common Afghani but destroying their full electricity output, every government bldg, all bridges, tunnels, trains, ship yards and everything else. My point is Bin Ladin and his gang of thugs, were not in charge of Afghanastan. Not in charge. To the contrary Ladins dogs were just a gang of terrorist. A gang no larger than the Black Stone Rangers of Chicago, The L.A. Kings, or the Hell's angels. A criminal gang. Not the Afghanastan government, not the Taliban. Just a gang in one isolated nowhere mountain top. Do you see my point? Afghanastan did not attack us. Bush retaliated against the wrong people. People sleeping in their bed thinking how they can earn some money to buy their children some shoes. Don't you see? Bush, Cheney and our Generals started a Vietnam war when they schock and awed Afghanastan. They we're no danger our army. My point is that instead of declaring war, he should have left the whole of Afghanastan alone and commanded a 100 special force paratrooper units, covered by drones and and stealth jets to parachute in and take the fight to the dogs that bit us. I'm not a general, but I'm at the age I could be. I've been here and their, A patriotic Vietnam Vet Standing up for our troops whom are dying as we did in Nam because of poor leadership inept Generals, and a Alfred E.Newman Strategy. I know Bush and Cheney only linger in the back groud ranting torture, (I'm sorry, enhanced interrogation, right Cheney?), to save American lives? Vietnam's are hell. The after effects are so numerous I would have to type for another two hours. I'll just be blunt. Two country's destroyed, with the survivors fighting as resistence fighters, as Alkaid cheers them on. What do we do? Two Vietnams at one time. What do we do? My age and experience as Vietnam Vet tell me it's time for armistice, maybe even amnesty. Bush and Cheny's have created such a quagmire what other resolution do we have. Fight another hundred years? I would stake my citizenship on Bin Ladin and his gang being as sick of this war as we are. We throw them a bone, along with amnesty on condition terrorism will stop. Is our only solution to make a deal with the Terrorist that we both would benefit immencely? Could we turn these Vietnams into something good for all, even the terrorist, but more importently peace for all, including Isreal, the mid east and the whole world. Terms can be compromised and papers signed. That's what I would if I was the General I could be.

LOL!

Yes it was. I'm convinced of it. When we get too smart, we become too dangerous for those who would rather keep the masses ignorant but under control.
I would expect that since our food supply is deregulated, our educational system failing, our medical system is as it is overtasked, and our economy, our former factories sent to Asia literally, we face what I call "culling the herd".
We are facing a war of the rich vs the poor and many are suffering quietly.

It's a sad testament to the ability of the Iraq government to protect it's own military. Even so, it's imperative they stand on their own two feet. Develop better security measures and clamp down on the terrorist activities in their own country. I wish them luck.

Thanks to George W. Bush nearly 3,500 of our service men and woman have died for nothing but to clean up his daddy's mess and spread imperialism. Why did we go to Iraq anyway? Dubya relied (and lied) upon false information, and went Lone Ranger against what the rest of the world viewed as a mistake (which it has proven to be). Enough war! Let's spend the billions upon billions inside our own borders!

It was a failed strategy from the beginning Bush and Obama and the pentagon did not realize the type of war it would be...First off the countries are dominated by religion , a religion that does not believe in freedom..You cannot bring freedom to those who follow their religion without independent thinking...secondly, you are dealing with a guerilla war not a conventional style of battle...to thorow massive amounts of troops into the fray is a mistake especially when your allies are not really allies...unconventional warfare calls for unconventional means...those means are not being utilized...

Does anyone actually believe that a bombing mass murder is a fast track to an afterlife wonderland full of happy virgins ready to serve a new arrival? I guess so.

liberalornot ... do you even have a brain that works... I am a democrat that loves this country... Your boys Bush and Cheney started this ill conceived war. The Republicans ... do you get that .. the Republicans started this war. There was NOT ONE terrorist in Iraq before Bush started his one man campaign against Hussein .. why because he wanted to finish what his daddy didn't. Hussein was not a terrorist. He was a loud mouth that wanted to keep his power in the region. Why do you think George Sr and Reagen helped put Hussein in power... To keep Iran and the region in check. So you are right .. IT IS ALL BUSH's FAULT. Oh and guess what .. we hadn't heard from Iran in years .. until Hussein was removed from power .. I guess Bush's war caused more than terror in Iraq. I wonder how the world would be today if Bush had listened to his advisors and went after Bin Laden in Afghanistan instead of wasting money and lives in Iraq.
