Gaming Addicts Guilty of Starving Baby to Death

A South Korean couple were convicted Friday of abandoning their newborn daughter, who starved to death while they addictively played an online game raising a virtual child.

The husband, a 41-year-old taxi driver, and his 25-year-old wife were sentenced to two years in prison, but the woman's term was suspended because she is pregnant.

The couple played at Internet cafes on average 10 hours every day and bottle-fed their baby only once a day, prosecutors said in an affidavit.

The girl, who was born prematurely and weighed 5 pounds (2.25 kilograms), was often fed rotten formula and was beaten when she cried out of hunger, the affidavit said.

They found her dead when they returned to their home in Suwon, just south of Seoul, after an all-night gaming session last September, the ruling said. They hid at a relative's home after a autopsy found the baby died of malnutrition.

"This constitutes an inhumane crime where the defendants abandoned even the most basic responsibilities as parents, and is unforgivable beyond any excuse or reason," the Suwon District Court said in the ruling.

The mother will avoid jail time if she stays out of trouble for three years. The couple, who have only been identified by their surnames, Kim, have seven days to appeal.

The case shocked South Korea and raised concern over the severity of online gaming and Internet addiction in the nation of 49 million. The government says there are 2 million "Internet addicts" in the nation considered one of the world's most technologically wired.

Gaming addiction is becoming a recognized disorder just like drug or alcohol addiction, yet it seems that the legal systems of many countries have yet to catch up. These people should be treated the same as drug addicts who neglect their child in order to stay high or an alcoholic couple who kill theirs in a drunken rage.

"...only been identified by their surnames, Kim..."
Great. That narrows it down to about a quarter of the Korean population.

It is not right that they had a newborn and did not do the right thing..Yet the baby was born with sp needs..Any baby going to cry when he/she needs to be fed, nappy changed etc..They could not leave the site they were on to care for that child..Now the woman is carrying again..I play the games I installed on my computer..I play one person..I am childless..It is not the games..It was the fact they did not want to be bothered with a child. Babies fuss..They should be fixed so they can't breed. Why did they not give the baby up if they could not handle the demands of it..In America women go to jail/prisom carrying babies..I am just lay person..

How unamerican can they be? Why didn't they do what the rest of the world is doing ? Just abort the fetus and carry on with htier internet games. These people must not read the american news papers or online news sites. murder of a fetus is accepyable act but starvation is not. The two faced law makers are just as if not more guilty than the parents themselves . Don't condemn what occurs in other countries when you support what occurs in your own country ona hourly basis. What hypocrits and sorry ecuses for humans .

Suspended? It should have just been POSTPONED! If anyone deserves to pay it's the MOTHER. How could a MOTHER neglect her child? Of course we all know that there are plenty out there that do, but if they do, they should pay more than the father. There is more of a connection between a mother and her child. Or there should be.

And there ain't no way that this woman should be allowed to keep that baby. Once she has it, she should be going straight to jail.

These two must have severe mental problems. Playing the games may be addicting, but you still know right from wrong. They knew that they were neglecting this baby. They knew that they were starving it to death. They went away and left it! There intention was for it to die. I call that MURDER.

I think their mental problems are gaming addiction which has become prominate in many countries and now affects parents as well as children. How many cases are there where nobody has died (yet) but people ruin their lives and that of their families. It's time to recognise game addition for what it is. An addiction that is becoming about as prevalent as alcohol or drug abuse.

WoW and all you other on-line gamers take heed - there are more important things going on than what's on your screen, called REAL LIFE.

Not the first time something like this has happened. It's too bad we allow any idiot to have kids but expect them to turn out perfect little citizens. One day hopefully people will wise up but I doubt it.
