JERUSALEM Wrapping up a three day visit to Israel, President Obama paid respects to its heroes and to victims of the Holocaust, solemnly reaffirming the Jewish state's right to exist.

Accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres, Obama laid wreaths at the graves of Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism who died in 1904 before realizing his dream of a Jewish homeland, and former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995.

He also toured the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, declaring after that the memorial illustrates the depravity to which man can sink but also serves as a reminder of the "righteous among nations who refused to be bystanders."

Friday's stop at Herzl's grave, together with Thursday's visit to see the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient Hebrew texts, were symbolic stops for Obama that acknowledged that the rationale for Israel's existence rests with its historical ties to the region and with a vision that predated the Holocaust. Obama was criticized in Israel for his 2009 Cairo speech in which he gave only the example of the Holocaust as reason for justifying Israel's existence.

"Here on your ancient land, let it be said for all the world to hear," Obama said at Yad Vashem Friday, in a clear response to that criticism. "The state of Israel does not exist because of the Holocaust, but with the survival of a strong Jewish state of Israel, such a holocaust will never happen again."

Obama to Israelis: Put yourselves in Palestinians' shoes

CBS News White House correspondent Major Garrett reports, however, that President Obama also took the opportunity in his Israel speeches to impress upon Israelis the daily struggles of their Palestinian neighbors.

"Put yourself in their shoes - look at the world through their eyes," Mr. Obama urged. "It is not fair that a Palestinian child cannot grow up in a state of their own," he added to applause from the audience, which was stocked with his supporters from the Jewish state.

The Middle East peace process, which Garrett notes is languishing in a largely moribund state, appears miniscule next to what Israelis regard as the existential threat of a nuclear armed Iran. The Iranian republic is not there yet, but the issue dominated the private talks and public speeches given by President Obama during his visit to the Holy Land.

Later Friday, Garret says Mr. Obama will leave Israel for neighboring Jordan, bringing with him more U.S. aid dollars to help the kingdom cope with hundreds of thousands refugees fleeing Syria's civil war.

Mr. Obama planned to meet with King Abdullah II, and Jordan's struggle with the influx of a half-million refugees from Syria is expected to be high on the list of topics for discussion. Abdullah has voiced fears that extremists and terrorists could create a regional base in Jordan.

Before leaving for Jordan, Mr. Obama was to have lunch with Netanyahu and then tour the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

President Obama and his hosts arrived at the somber Herzl grave site under cloudless skies. Mr. Obama approached Herzl's resting place alone and bowed his head in silence. He turned briefly to ask Netanyahu where to place a small stone in the Jewish custom, then laid the stone atop the grave.

"It is humbling and inspiring to visit and remember the visionary who began the remarkable establishment of the State of Israel," Mr. Obama wrote in the Mt. Herzl guestbook. "May our two countries possess the same vision and will to secure peace and prosperity for future generations."

At Rabin's grave a short walk away, Mr. Obama was greeted by members of Rabin's family. He initially placed a stone on Rabin's wife's side of the grave, then returned to place one atop Rabin's side. In a gesture linking the U.S. and Israel, the stone placed on Rabin's grave was from the grounds of the Martin Luther King memorial in Washington, the White House said.

Rabin, Mr. Obama told family members, was "a great man."

Chatting with the family, the president joked that "Bibi arranged for perfect weather," using Netanyahu's familiar name. He then added that "Shimon plied me with wine" at the official state dinner Thursday evening. At one point the talk turned to the singer who performed at the dinner, and Obama pointed out that he was known to sing, too. "They had me on YouTube," he said with a laugh. "Check it out — Obama singing Al Green."

At Yad Vashem, Mr. Obama donned a skull cap and was accompanied by Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a survivor of the Buchenwald Concentration camp who lost both parents in the Holocaust. Among his stops was Yad Vashem's Hall of Names, a circular chamber that contains original testimony documenting every Holocaust victim ever identified.

"Nothing could be more powerful," Mr. Obama said.

Israel has a good friend in the US. They also know Obama is sympathetic to their enemies and does not represent that friendship. It was real embarrassing when he stood there quacking making peace with enemies who routinely shoot at Israeli's and threaten to wipe Israel off the map. They know full well that they exist because of armed strength. No liberal fool can change that fact.

The Jews will continue to prevail and nobody will ever change that.
The Palestinians will always be a terrorist oriented group of people and that will never change.

They should just build a massive wall separating the two peoples and be done with it.

Give the Palestinians Gaza and the West Bank and seal them off.

Assad boasts that he arsenaled chemical agents as vx, mustard gas, chlorine, and sarin. He said that if Turks attack over the border like in Kurdistan, then chemical weapons deploy. The Obama Administration should send experimental armed drone technology to Turkey.

The clear solution: allow Iran to nuke Israel and turn it into a glass parking lot.

Problem solved. No more US Presidents having to kiss the ring of Israel.

Interesting, a country the size of Rhode Island, with only one real ally and 8 countries with more people in their capital cities than the country of Israel combined, all making statements of ill will for such a small, independent state... and the US President is kissing their ring?

Curious to know why people seem to insist that Israel is such a powerhouse?

Then again, that small country having to deal with hostile neighbors on all sides deserves to be bullied?

It must really burn the liberals butts that the President is being diplomatic to Peace...

Exactly how much support from the US have they received in the past 10 years?

While at it, compare it to the amount Obama gave Syria, Libya, Egypt, Iraq, Iran AND Saudi Arabia over the last 4 years.

Hate to break it to you, but more per year (over the last decade) have gone to Muslim states that have publicly disrespected the US citizens and beliefs, along with taken hundreds of lives on thier "Holy Cause". Funded largely by US taxpayers.

So having recognized their independence in 1948 an helped them to maintain it for over half a century, isn't it finally time to let them go on their own and put the taxpayers dollars at us here at HOME where we are???????????????

You think?

If the Jews are "God's Chosen People" why did God allow so many of them to be turned into winter fuel?
Xbeing replies:
linkicon reporticon emailicon
Yeah, because the billions more sent to their enemies is such a better way to spent taxpayer money.

Curious, exactly how much money DID the US give, loan or otherwise provide to Israel in the past decade?

I always get so confused when interpreting a comment from a person who doesn't understand the difference between the word THEIR & THERE. It's simply the diference between posession and location. Tommyboy, your comment really threw me for a loop because "their nasty people..." should have been the contraction, THEY'RE short for "They are nasty people...."

Aaah, so many lies .. so many cancelled user credentials. Care to enlighten the audience as to why you comment on individual stories under multiple user names? Care to enlighten the audience as to why CBSnews's staff keeps booting you off their web site?

If your answer includes anything about AIPAC, the Mossad, hasbra, or other such fearful notions of inferiority with respect to Jews, I encourage you to think a little more deeply about your response .. none of those apply.
