India tests nuclear-capable missile

NEW DELHI An Indian news report says India has successfully tested a medium-range, nuclear-capable ballistic missile fired from an underwater platform in the Bay of Bengal.

The Press Trust of India news agency says the missile would soon be ready for deployment on platforms, including a nuclear submarine.

India's Defense Ministry spokesman was not available for comment.

Pallava Bagla, a defense expert, said Sunday's test off the east coast was 14th in the series with a range of 435 miles.

It would complete India's nuclear triad — the capability to launch missiles from land, air and below the sea.

India and its nuclear-armed rival Pakistan routinely test different versions of their missiles. The countries have fought three wars since they gained independence from Britain in 1947.

PSB-Delhi says:
India follows the Hindu dharma of non-violence. In 5000 years of history, it has never attacked another country, but was in fact successful in repelling thousands of invaders, even though it may have taken time to do so. It lost parts like Sumatera, Ceylon, Pak, Bangladesh and bits of Afganistan over time. At one time the GDP of the Indian empire was 25000 times that of any other country (year 1650, source Cunningham). Bad times come everywhere, so we don't feel it too much. In fact, surveys regularly show that happiness levels in India are higher than most countries, even USA. That's because people are content in 'less'. Only the threat from China prompts us to test mega weapons. We don't wish the Dragon or anyone else to swallow more of our motherland. What's wrong in wanting to defend ourselves? Does any other country have impressive testimonials over 5000 or even 1000 years of never attacking anyone or being happy in our own plight? We don't want to steal oil or minerals that belong to others because our religion makes us believe that if birth and death are controlled by God, then everything else will be taken care by God too. It may be naive, but nature does have a way of rounding things up. In other words, everything is cyclical. This cycle will turn too. Those who critise India should restrain themselves.

India, the largest and most populated country in the world, is noted by the UN as one of the 'good guys' with nukes. Not like North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan who are considered the 'Bad Guys". Why? Because they don't go around threatening other countries with their capabilities of being able, if they want, to 'destroy them". Nor do they boast of their nuclear capabilities, they have that they could use!

However, the fact remains that India is also the largest and most populated country in the World with millions of people below the 'poverty level'. For the life of me, I have NEVER, EVER been able to figure this out! Because I, personally, could not enjoy the virtues of my (Riches) or achievements, while my people are without! I would figure out how we ALL, as a whole could benefit, with everyone actually doing their "fair share".

Our Armed Forces are a primary example, especially the United States Navy at sea, where 'every person has a specific job, and everything has it's specific place'. IF ONE individual, JUST ONE, does not do their assigned duty, then the entire TEAM cannot function as a whole. Then because the team cannot NOW do their assigned task the entire ship is in jeopardy of NOT being able to achieve it's mission, AND could possibly put the ENTIRE crew and the SHIP into harms way! As a retired Sailor let me tell you that when you are in the middle of the ocean and some idiots start their crap the entire crew could be gone.

That's why India, although peaceful now, should be watched for ONE specific reason - with so many MILLIONS of poverty level citizens, but with all their advancements in technologies, unless they begin to elevate their citizens levels of prosperity, then they are in for a rough ride in the future! I really like India and I hope their Leaders do the right thing for their citizens. Jack

What do N.Korea or Iran have to do with India's missile test ? You can't compare Ahmedinajad or Kim Il Sung with Mahatma Gandhi or Manmohan Singh, so how can you compare India with any of these nations ? Pakistan on the other hand is a rogue nation and again nothing to do with India or Israel.

The reason N,Korea and Iran face sanctions is because they are violent tyrannical governments that support terrorists (Iran - Hezbullah!) and have openly declared to destroy other states. Just like kindergarten bad behavior is NOT rewarded.

TPAULA says:
Why is North Korea singled out for sanctions by the UN? It seems to me that if the US doesn't like you then you have to obey rules that don't apply to the US or its friends. If I was North Korea I would have no respect for anything the UN, US or any of those other hypocrites say.

yeah, nobody is allowed to have nukes without our explicit permission, and nobody is allowed to develop/work on bettering themselves or testing anything without our consent. That's why the USA owns the entire planet.

India,Israel and Pakistans are not signatories to NPT. These countries argue that the NPT creates a club of "nuclear haves" and a larger group of "nuclear have-nots" by restricting the legal possession of nuclear weapons to those states that tested them before 1967, but the treaty never explains on what ethical grounds such a distinction is valid. India conducted the test in 1974 and Pakistan in 1998.
