Panetta says Karzai should thank allied forces

LIMA, Peru Defense Secretary Leon Panetta lashed back at Afghan President Hamid Karzai Friday, saying the Afghan leader should say thank you now and then to the allied forces who are fighting and dying there, rather than criticizing them.

Panetta was responding to Karzai's complaints Thursday that the U.S. is failing to go after militants based in Pakistan, and instead is concentrating on the insurgents in Afghanistan.

"We have made progress in Afghanistan because there are men and women in uniform who have been willing to fight and die for Afghanistan's sovereignty," Panetta snapped, as he spoke with reporters traveling with him to South America. "Those lives were lost fighting the right enemy not the wrong enemy and I think it would be helpful if the president, every once in a while, expressed his thanks for the sacrifices that have been made by those who have fought and died for Afghanistan, rather than criticizing them."

The uncharacteristic shot from Panetta comes as tensions between the two countries have escalated over the increase in insider attacks, where Afghan security forces or insurgents dressed in their uniforms have turned their guns on coalition troops. And it raises the temperature on the heels of the announcement that, as of last weekend, 2,000 U.S. troops had lost their lives in the war.

U.S. suspects Haqqani tie to Afghan insider attacks

At the same time, however, there is persistent frustration with the insurgents, including members of the Haqqani network, who wage attacks against coalition forces in Afghanistan and can then retreat to their safe havens in Pakistan. U.S. officials have repeatedly pressed Islamabad to more forcefully go after the insurgents, including Haqqani factions in and around North Waziristan.

But, the U.S. also routinely uses drone strikes across the border into Pakistan to target and kill militants.

Karzai spoke at a press conference, complaining that if NATO troops want to go after terrorists they need to go where their safe havens are. And he also expressed frustration that Afghan forces aren't getting the weapons they need from NATO allies, suggesting Afghanistan might have to go to other countries such as China and Russia to get them.

Panetta's sharp retort also comes just days before he and other NATO defense ministers meet in Brussels to discuss the war and the road ahead, as allied forces begin to withdraw and transfer security to the Afghans. And the exchanges could fuel concerns among NATO allies that the insider attacks may be eroding trust between coalition and Afghan troops, making security transition all the more difficult.

Panetta has not spoken to Karzai for several months, and last met with him in December when he traveled to Afghanistan to meet with commanders and visit troops before the holidays. Both Panetta and Marine Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, will attend the NATO meeting.

Asked whether the insider attacks could prompt some allies to seek a faster withdrawal from Afghanistan, Panetta reaffirmed support for the current timeline that has combat troops leaving the warzone by the end of 2014 and turning security over to the Afghan forces. Officials have said that as many as 20,000 U.S. troops could remain over time, to continue training and counterterrorism efforts.

"My goal is to make clear to NATO and to our allies that we are taking all steps necessary to confront this issue and that it should not be allowed to deter us from the plan that General Allen put in place," Panetta said.

To date there have been 53 NATO troops killed in insider attacks, prompting military leaders to briefly curtail some partnered operations and set up a new approval process for those that involve smaller units.

10+ years, more than 2,000 US troops slaughtered, hundreds of BILLIONS of dollars sent to support a country whose President is now claiming we are not doing enough for them.!!

What the hell is wrong with the so-called leaders of our country.???!!!

Karzai does nothing but whine and demand renumeration from the US every time we accidentally kill Afghani citizens.

Karzai is already (and has been since the beginning) raking in millions in weapons and money from Iran.

There's a phrase "what else do you want; blood".

Enough American blood has been shed in Afghanistan whose members of their own army and police are now murdering our troops on their own bases.

Apparently, Panetta, Obama, the Pentagon and the DOD now want our troops to have eyes in the back of their heads and in their a**es in order to stay alive.

The mere fact that the very people we are supposed to be training to eventually begin defending their own country are killing our troops is obscene.

The American people have been asking our idiot leaders to pull all of our troops out of Afghanistan for a long time.

Somebody tell me why this government; which is supposed to be "OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE" flatly refuse to bring our troops home.

Every time the issue of the war comes before Obama, Panetta, the DOD and the Pentagon; we keep hearing the same thing.

I no longer think we are in Afghanistan to support Afghanistan, but appear to still be there out of sheer ignorance and arrogance on the part of
our so-called leaders.

To date; these "leaders" have almost virtually destroyed the US with their actions and inactions.!

It's almost like the rest of the American people outside of Washington don't exist, but we are the ones paying for our own destruction.

When these politicians are sworn in, they take an oath that; in part; says they swear to "protect and defend the United States against all enemies; foreign and domestic".

For right now; our government appears to be the "domestic" enemies we need to defend ourselves against.

The United States is in the worst shape it has been in since the Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written.

"We the People" need to find someone who will reverse the damage done by our "leaders" for the last 12 years.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions who these people should be.??!!!

I fully believe that this administration after stating that our military and our vetreans are potential terrorists,is overtly trying to supress our military vote. I onder how many Americans realize that our troops have to ask permission to fire at our enemies or that they are not allowed to raid possible terroist houses after dark because it interfears with Afghans sleep. These standing orders, and others that interfer with their operations are why I believe this administration does not want our troops voting. If you want documentation Google it.

I'm glad to see Panetta respond as any American would, but he is ignoring the role that Mr. Karzai has to play to maintain any crediblity in his country. President Karzai can not bow to Caesar (U.S. Military) or he will lose respect from every person in this unfathomably tribal country that he is trying to move more toward a modern nation. His reactions, statements and positions on so many incidents have been so maddening, frustrating and unbelievable to Americans who have no idea of what he is trying to accomplish and the mindset he is dealing with. Afghanistan will never be like Turkey, Tunisia, Jordan or Saudi Arabia. A central government that is too strong will only bring rebellion. He has to convince all the leaders of Afghanistans many factions that they first must respect each other and form a united coalition that ensures peace between them and then that coalition has to find a way to live with tolerance of the surrounding nations of the world. I would say that this could be his "Mission Statement".

No sh*t.

Frankly, I've never understood why we invaded Afghanistan in the first place. They obviously don't want us there. Karzai needs to either sink or swim on his own.

let them get their weapons wherever they want. This country is a joke. Karzai is playing us he doesn't want us to win this thing. Also we need to kick the s*&t out of Pakistan. I have no sympathy for them for the years they hid Ben Laden. Get out of the area now not 2014. Why loose more Americans? We had better get ready for Iran, that's next.
