NEW YORK The State Department is further drawing down staff at the U.S. Embassy in Libya for security reasons as the Obama administration continues to face heat over the exact nature of the deadly attack on the Benghazi consulate that resulted in the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

A senior State Department official said Thursday that the reduction in personnel at the embassy in Tripoli, which has already been operating with limited staff after the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi is expected to be temporary. The official said the security situation would be reviewed early next week with an eye toward restoring the staff "as soon as conditions allow."

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to publicly discuss the security situation in Libya.

The embassy warned Americans of possible demonstrations in the capital and Benghazi on Friday.

The Obama administration has now definitively called the assault as a "terrorist" act, most recently by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Thursday, but it has received criticism for initially characterizing the attack as a spontaneous outgrowth of an anti-U.S. protest sparked by a film mocking the Prophet Muhammad.

Those critics - among them several Republican lawmakers - have said the nature of the attack, which featured heavy weaponry and a level of coordination, indicate it was pre-planned. The administration initially said there was no indication of pre-planning and have not officially changed that assessment.

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb's growing threat

Several militant groups have been mentioned as suspects, most prominently Ansar al Sharia, which is believed to have ties to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. But as CBS News senior correspondent John Miller notes, blurred lines between groups make pinpointing a specific party as the one responsible is difficult.

Even as of Friday, an FBI team sent to the country to investigate has yet to enter Benghazi amid security concerns, Miller reports. The same militias who may have been involved in the attack are the ones responsible for the city's security.

"an ambassador and three other Americans dead."

Obama must be held accountable. They are dead thanks to the failure Obama. Obama must be impeached. I read Obama does not attend security briefings at the White House. Obama must be impeached now. Obama does not deserve to be reelected. Obama is a disaster for our country. High unemployment and now 4 Americans dead. Obama must go.

Pull out? Why? Romney wouldn't apologize this way, he would send 20,000 troops to secure the country and teach them a lesson for not having a democracy established sooner... Then, since we are there any way he would send another 20 or 30 grand to Egypt to fix that place too... Then work the boys up to Iran, no sense in paying the transportation fees to bring them home... may as well fix Iran as long as we are there...no?

Vote Romney/Ryan, paid for Bain Capital, experts in harvesting companies that give jobs to the 47% who are low paid moochers..

I certainly hope that if Romney is elected, and he has my vote, that he doesn't involve us in another 'boots on the ground' war.

Suggestion: Send a drone to spread a deadly biologic agent, over countries which advocate the annihilation of America. Simple, easy, cheap, no infrastructure damage (keep those oil wells pumping!), and the rotting dead bodies may aid agriculture.

Today we found out from the Sec of Defense that the Obama administration had information over a month before 4 brave Americans were killed, that this was a dangerous area and that something could happen. Well, it did on no less than 9/11 without any troops protecting them, and what does Obama call it a day later in an interview "just a speed bump". This really shows the compassion Obama had for the families of these 4 Americans.

Uh, the entire middle east is a dangerous area and something / anything could happen at any time duh. You're attempt at propaganda and the twisting of facts and words doesn't hold water at all. A FACT is George Bush was warned well in advance of 9/11 and HE did nothing; and comment on THAT?

It needs to be CLOSED. ALL our embassies and consulate offices need to be CLOSED. Too much money in that game. There ARE computers with real time talking as well as telephones should there need to be any discussion about anything.
