(CBS/AP) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a rambling but relatively toned-down speech at the United Nations Wednesday in which he called the Sept. 11 terror attacks "tragic" but also said that humanity's lives would be "beautiful and pleasant" had U.S. forces not thrown Osama bin Laden's corpse into the sea.

Ahmadinejad, who in 2010 called the 9/11 attacks "a big lie," criticized the United States for "killing and throwing the culprit into the sea without trial or without informing the world and the people of America." He told the annual gathering of the U.N. General Assembly that the U.S. should have formed "an independent fact-finding team" to "make the general public aware of the truth behind the incident."

The U.S. delegation did not attend Ahmadinejad's speech, delivered amid tensions over Iran's nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes and the United States, Israel and Western nations claim is a cover for building a weapon.

Known for past fiery denunciations of the United States and Israel, which he refers to as "Zionists," Ahmadinejad cited what he termed the "continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation."

He appeared to make reference to Israel's threats to strike Iran when he said, "No one feels secure or safe, even those who have stockpiled thousands of atomic bombs and other arms in their arsenals." He did not reference Iran's nuclear program.

Yet at times Ahmadinejad also seemed to strike a conciliatory tone.

"I do not believe that Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists and others have any problems among themselves or are hostile against each other," Ahmadinejad said.

In an interview broadcast on "CBS This Morning" Wednesday, Ahmadinejad walked back from one of his previous inflammatory comments, that Israel should be "wiped off" the map.

"We have never threatened them," Ahmadinejad told CBS News.

"We say that occupation should be done away with," said Ahmadinejad. "Warlike behavior should be done away with. Terrorism should be done away with. The killing of women and children should be done away with. Has the Zionist regime done anything other than this during the last 65 years? No, they haven't."

On Syria, Ahmadinejad denied the recent public admission by Major Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard, that Iranian forces are training 50,000 soldiers for President Bashar Assad's regime.

"I don't think 50,000 forces would even fit in Syria," Ahmadinejad told CBS News.

Instead, he said that Iran supports both the Assad regime and the opposition: "Certainly both parties are our friends. They are both people Syria. We love both parties."

During his U.N. address, Ahmadinejad at times struck a populist tone and said the U.S. and European governments don't hear the voices of those who "constitute 99 percent of the societies."

"Are we to believe that those who spend hundreds of millions of dollars on election campaigns have the interests of the people of the world at their hearts?" Ahmadinejad asked.

His lone reference to the U.S. presidential election came during a part of his speech in which he was making the case for a "new world order" and disparaging the "current world order" for being "constructed on materialism and is no way bound to moral values."

"Despite what big political parties claim in the capitalist countries, the money that goes into election campaigns is usually nothing but an investment," Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad's reputation prompted officials to urge him to take a less provocative tone in his speech. On Sunday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon had met with Ahmadinejad and raised the potentially harmful consequences of inflammatory rhetoric "from various countries in the Middle East," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

But on Monday, Ahmadinejad took aim at both the U.S. and Israel while addressing a high-level U.N. meeting promoting the rule of law, accusing Washington of shielding what he called a nuclear-armed "fake regime." His remarks prompted a walkout by Israel's U.N. Ambassador Ron Prosor.

Ahmadinejad spoke Wednesday on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and the holiest day on the religion's calendar. His appearance at the world body on the holy day irritated many Jewish New Yorkers, CBS New York station WCBS-TV reports.

Ahmadinejad has no idea that in NY, many buildings pay tribute to ancient Persian law, philosophy, and religion (Zoroastrianism), which - unlike Ahmadinejad - tolerated all religions and cultures. A Persia where Cyrus the Great freed Jews from Babylonian captivity 500 years BC. NY buildings such as the Brooklyn Museum, two large courthouses, and the main Post Office reflect this tolerant Persia. (Scroll down within link for details):

I think it was more he thinks 9/11 was an Inside job. Duh that is obvious to anyone who actually does some simple research. What he thinks is tragic is that we did this to our own people. What side of history do you want to be on. Duped, don't care or do something about this.

I don't believe it hates Jews in the least.
+++++
Here, let Iranian history help you out a little:

1. AYATOLLAH RUHOLLAH KHOMEINI [1970]: "Jews . . . wish to establish Jewish domination ... Since they are a cunning and resourceful group of people, I fear that . . . they may one day achieve their goal ... Jews have grasped the world with both hands and are devouring it with an insatiable appetite; they are devouring America and have now turned their attention to Iran and still they are not satisfied."

2. SUPREME LEADER ALI KHAMEINI [2001]: "There is evidence which shows that Zionists had close relations with German Nazis and exaggerated statistics on Jewish killings. There is even evidence on hand that a large number of non-Jewish hooligans and thugs of Eastern Europe were forced to emigrate to Palestine as Jews . . . to install in the heart of the Islamic world an anti-Islamic State under the guise of supporting the victims of racism."

3. FORMER PRESIDENT AKBAR HASHEMI RAFSANJANI [2001]: "Jews . . . wish to establish Jewish domination ... Since they are a cunning and resourceful group of people, I fear that . . . they may one day achieve their goal .."

4. PRESIDENT MAHMOUD AHMADINEJAD [2006]: "We say that this fake regime [Israel] cannot not logically continue to live. Open the doors (of Europe) and let the Jews go back to their own countries."

++
Those aren't anyone's words but Iranian leadership. Sure, anyone can whine here about alleged mistranslations. Sure, Iranian leadership has improved their use of the English language so to offer sophists an avenue of retreat from the conclusion that "Iranian leadership hates Jews". But what the men say stands on its own. Read the original in Persian, if you still see room for innocence.

And let the spin of US media begin. President Ahmadinejad has some valid points and we should remember why the Sha of Iran was installed courtesy of British Petroleum. Iran is still Persia for the most part - filled with brilliant engineers, scientists, and medical professionals. The women can still get away wearing their fitted blazer coats and head scarves, get university educations, and are respected parts of society. Iran is Persia and not some tribal backwards cesspool like Afghanistan or the insane Saudi monarchy.

OK, none of our world leaders are super, but they are all intelligent for the most part. I believe we should try to love one another in spite of our differences. Jesus, for the Christians, also said we should love our enemies...remember? Love is a verb. Let's not incite anger in eachother but learn from eachother about our cultures and customs. If we don't want to learn from eachother then let's at least forward eachother the courtesy of leaving eachother alone. All this being said I have to confess something. Even though I don't know what I would do without algebra, sometimes when I'm sitting in my college algebra class trying to calculate logarithms on a test I think in my head 'those dogone Persians!'. That's all I'm saying. :D :P

Well, we cant. Iran threatens to kill and anihilate our ally. They threaten the oil supplies of the region, and thus my price of gasoline. Those two things alone mean we must keep them in check.

--------------

Threats don't matter, Mortar.

If you had a clue about history, you'd understand WHY we didn't enter WWI and WWII for years after our allies were already engaged: The Constitution, which you know nothing about.

We have other sources of oil, so don't try that BS, either. Heck - walk, or ride a bike and get rid of that gut.

Maybe you folks should look at Iran's history regarding nuclear armaments? In the mid-1990's, Iran was very vocal about establishing the Middle East as a nuke-free zone. They were told to shut their damned beaks by the USA, Europe, and Israel. Now, neighbors Pakistan and India have nukes, in addition to nearby Israel, Russia, and China. Arch-enemy Iraq is under the protection of the USA, who uses belligerent rhetoric at the drop of a hat and routinely orders it's nuclear-laden navy into Iranian territorial waters without Iranian permission. Iran offered the correct solution to rid the volatile Middle East of nukes and was told no. If I was in charge of Iran, I'd probably tell the world to go screw itself, too.

I don't understand this article's difficulty with the term "Zionist", which has been, still is, and probably will remain being defined as someone who supports the creation of a Jewish state in the Middle East, preferably Palestine. In both world wars, both the Zionists and Arabs were promised control over Palestine by Britain if they helped fight the Axis. Both did, and somebody had to be screwed over. The Zionist's won, and the Arabs were upset over being betrayed by the Allies and ending up living in a refugee tent camp. I don't blame the Arabs/Persians for feeling the way they do.

Anybody who thinks that this problem will be solved by forcing the Arabs to accept being betrayed is an idiot and fool. Judging America's attempt at force in the Middle East, notably Iraq and Afghanistan, I'd say we have a worse record of success than some of the inbred Kings and blasphemous Popes of the Crusades. Maybe it's time to leave them alone to figure out their own problems, and let Israel realize what the Arabs practiced for thousands of years in the region. Let people live together without such vicious acrimony. Jews and Christians both lived peacefully under Muslim rule for centuries, and there was no great problem until the idiot English started making promises impossible to keep.
