Why Chen Guangcheng wants to leave China

(CBS News) Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng was returned to the Chinese by the U.S. Wednesday after his recent escape to the U.S. Embassy that set off a diplomatic crisis between China and the United States. Upon his return, Chen was promised he would be safe. However, Chen now wants to leave on the plane of Hillary Clinton, who is visiting China.

Chen is a famous human rights campaigner who exposed forced abortions in China that is sometimes ordered to enforce the policy that allows one child per family. We learned what it was that changed Chen's mind about staying in China in an interview he did Thursday with Asia correspondent Holly Williams of Sky News. "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley spoke with Williams about her interview.

"Well, I was able to get hold of him on his mobile phone earlier today in Beijing," she said. "He told me he couldn't make calls on the phone -- those were being blocked, he thinks, by the authorities, but people are able to call in and reach him. On the phone he sounded worried, tired, obviously anxious for the safety of his family, but he was also very warm and very friendly."

Chen told Williams he was speaking from his hospital bed. Williams asked Chen why he told diplomats at the U.S. Embassy that he wanted to stay in China. "At that time," he said, "I didn't have all the information. I couldn't get information. Now I have it, and I sense certain things, so I've changed my mind. "

Speaking to Chen in Mandarin, Williams asked whether any of his new information included threats from back in his home village. Chen said: "The (local officials) broke into my home armed with sticks and wanted to beat my family to death. They've installed seven video surveillance cameras in our garden, on the roof, and inside our house. And they're going to install an electric fence around my house."

He concluded: "It's not safe, because the rights of citizens here can't be guaranteed. "

As Williams told Pelley: "He said he didn't blame American officials for not doing more to guarantee his safety. But he also said if he could speak directly to President Obama and Hillary Clinton, he would ask them to take concrete action to protect his family."

Pelley asked Williams if the Chinese said anything officially about whether they're interested in letting Chen go.

"Thus far they haven't made any comment on that," said Williams. "What we do know is that the Chinese are embarrassed by this whole issue of Chen Guangcheng. They've made it clear that they are angry and that they see this as unwanted American interference in the internal affairs of China."

Can we go to a 1 child per family policy for those who cannot afford to support their own children? Not saying forced abortion, but perhaps forced birth control? Think we need to sit down with china and learn a few things about that one.

Why Chen sounds a little creepy for you?
Some news seem not painting the whole picture because I sense it suggests blaming Chen of his changing mind often. I think US embassy is naive (if not hasty) in handling the case. The Sky News reporter, Holly Williams communicated directly with Chen explained the reason why Chen changed his mind. Chen did not have all information while he with US embassy. (Why? US embassy somehow cannot get info for Chen?) After meeting his wife, Chen knows how Chinese Government ill-treated his family. Chen was also threatened that his wife will be beaten to dead if he did not leave US Embassy. I wonder how efficient and how often the US embassy communicates with Chen while public news can communicate clearly with Chen? Can US embassy speak Chinese as clearly as Sky News reporter Holly Williams?

How the United States would have reacted if during the "Occupy Wall Street" protests, a foreign embassy had "brazenly and openly received those condemned by American politicians as 'rabble' and 'rioters'"?

Why must we have 10 articles about this when a bit more investigation before posting would result in a substantive article?

This piece-meal treatise is a bit annoying.

A separate article fir every blow by blow: What happpened, then another for each other w and H.

Journalism is,in fact, dead.

CHEN should get a cheeseburger with all the trimmings and get sent back to prison with the crew which aided him in his publicity stunt. This stunt is not something that the US needs to foster unless Romney wants the guy to move in with his household. So stop the musical chairs stuff now.

The US Department of State should learn how to mind its own business and stay out of other country's domestic policy, e.g., one child one family. The Central Bank of the People's Republic of China should stop financing federal deficits. The US Department of State should have its budget cut in half. Right now the CHinese government is directly financing the U government as it sanctimoniously complains about China. Let's get real.

United States of American was formed in 1878 because people are united together to fight for freedom of religions, persecutions, and prejudice. If we just look at the $ and mind our own business, then we should not celebrate the July 4th because there will be no United States of American. Am I Right?
If I am right, anyone (no matter what race, country, color) he/she seeks for protection and comes to my house. I won't cast him out to the street (of course after discussing with my wife and my children, we will find a way to protect him while keeping my family still safe). Am I right?

china has a billlion people(3 times the u.s. population) therefore the 1 child per family policy. may seem harsh but to feed a population that size may be better than hunger. some parts of africa have runaway population problems, families of like 10 kids, and hunger.he had no issuewhen he went to a chinese hospital to get free medical care. wants to bring his whole family to the u.s. how many? everything paid for by taxpayers? free food, free healthcare, free rent? then after awhile he goes on speaking tours.self interest?

But China is now fully capitalist. So shouldn't families that can support them be allowed to have more than one child? Shouldn't being able to choose how many children you have a basic human right? Nor does your claim that he will live off the dole in America have any merit. He's a world famous human rights activist. There are plenty of American based human rights NGO's that would hire him in a second. So what ifi he goes on speaking tours? That means he's making income as a taxpayer and you have nothing to complain about.

Let the blind dissident in with 100 million of his seeing eye intellectuals. They will refurbish the U.S. with smart managers for our factories and offices. Without brain power our nation will soon resemble Sub-Sahara Africa with its mud huts.
