TUNIS, Tunisia - The Saudi foreign minister says arming the rebels fighting the brutal regime of President Bashar Assad is "an excellent idea."

Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal went further than any of the other Friends of Syria nations meeting in Tunis Friday to increase pressure on Assad to call for a cease-fire, step down and allow humanitarian aid to flow to hard-hit areas.

Syria in crisis: Who are the key players?

The United States, European and Arab nations were set Friday to demand that Assad agree to a cease-fire or face as-yet unspecified punishments and an increasingly emboldened and powerful armed resistance.

Asked at the start of a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton if he thought arming the Syrian opposition was a good idea, al-Faisal said: "I think it's an excellent idea."

Asked why, he said, "Because they have to protect themselves."

The group is demanding that Assad step down or face as-yet undefined punishments.

I agree and we also should start training the freedom fighters to overthrow the Saudis. The they can have a secular constitutional gov that allow various religions and does not consider women property.

Caviar Emptor says:
It's propaganda. Efforts to impose "humanitarian aid" that ultimately killed around 30,000 people in Libya is underway in Tunisia. This arrives after months of corporate media coverage portraying the al-Assad regime as murderous while ignoring reports of CIA and NATO snipers killing civilians.

In January, it was reported that MI6, the CIA, and British SAS are in Syria working with the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian National Council to overthrow the al-Assad regime. The Free Syrian Army is widely recognized as a creation of NATO. It is comprised largely of militants from the Muslim Brotherhood - itself an asset of British intelligence - and is funded, supported, and armed by the United States, Israel, and Turkey.

Former FBI interpreter and whistle blower Sibel Edmunds, former CIA officer Philip Giraldi, and a handful of others have reported on the U.S.-NATO-CIA campaign to undermine al-Assad and violently depose his regime, but this information had been routinely ignored by the establishment media.
