TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's Supreme Leader warned Friday that any attack on the Islamic Republic would have negative consequences for the United States.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's rhetoric, which was forceful but familiar, came a day after U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta suggested Israel could strike Iran as soon as April if international sanctions remain insufficient impetus to coax Iran away from its clandestine nuclear work.

"Threatening Iran and attacking Iran will harm America," Ayatollah Khamenei told worshipers in Tehran after Friday prayers, according to the Reuters news agency. "Sanctions will not have any impact on our determination to continue our nuclear course."

The exact phrasing used by Khamenei is subject to translation, and a Farsi speaker at CBS News says the word he chose may not be as strong as "harm." The Supreme Leader may be more accurately quoted as saying an attack on Iran would be "detrimental" to the U.S., or would "not help" the American position.

Iran helping al Qaeda? War "hysteria" builds
How much can U.S. influence Israel on Iran?

"In response to threats of oil embargo and war, we have our own threats to impose at the right time," Khamenei continued in his televised address, offering no further explanation as to what measures Iran might take.

He said that the country would continue its controversial nuclear program.

In the address, Khamenei also said Iran will help any nation or group that confronts the "cancer" Israel.

Iranian officials have consistently reacted defiantly to indications by the U.S. and Israel that they might at some point take military action against Iranian nuclear facilities.

But any statement by Iran's Supreme Leader, who has final say on all matters of state, makes it all the more unlikely that Tehran will switch tack.

Khamenei also warned that Tehran would reveal a letter that it says U.S. President Barack Obama sent the Iranian leadership in an attempt to end the nuclear stand-off. He said it shows that the Americans cannot be trusted. The White House has denied that such a letter exists.

Khamenei affirmed that Iran had assisted militant groups like the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas — a well-known policy, but one that Iranian leaders rarely state explicitly.

"We have intervened in anti-Israel matters, and it brought victory in the 33-day war by Hezbollah against Israel in 2006, and in the 22-day war" between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip, he said.

Israel's large-scale military incursion against Hamas in 2008-2009 in Gaza ended in a cease-fire, with Israel claiming to have inflicted heavy damage on the militant organization. The war in Lebanon ended with a U.N.-brokered truce that sent thousands of Lebanese troops and international peacekeepers into southern Lebanon to prevent another outbreak.

"From now on, in any place, if any nation or any group confronts the Zionist regime, we will endorse and we will help. We have no fear expressing this," said Khamenei.

He said Israel is a "cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut."

The remarks are a rare direct acknowledgment by an Iranian leader of Tehran's intervention against Israel in armed conflicts. Iran has usually said in the past that it offers political support to Hezbollah and the Palestinian groups.

An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said he wasn't surprised by Khamenei's remarks. "It's the same kind of hate speech that we've been seeing from Iran for many years now," Yigal Palmor said.

Both U.S. and Israel have not ruled out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities, which the West suspects are aimed at developing weapons technology.

Iran says its nuclear activities have geared toward peaceful purposes such as power generation and medical isotopes.

Another potential military flashpoint is the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Iran has threatened to close the strait in response to U.S. and EU sanctions targeting the country's oil exports.

Khamenei warned that Iran might reveal a letter that it claims to have received from President Obama, which he implied had contained promises that Washington had not offered.

"The U.S. president sent a letter to us and we replied. Then they showed reaction and took action. The letters one day will be revealed to the public and people will find what their words are. One of our essential jobs is to be aware about their deceptions in their promises and smiles," he said.

Khamenei did not say when the letters had supposedly been exchanged.

An Iranian lawmaker in January claimed that Mr. Obama had asked for direct talks with Iran in a secret letter, that also warned Tehran against closing the Strait of Hormuz.

Obama administration officials have denied there was such a letter. Tehran and Washington cut diplomatic relations in the aftermath of Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution.

Half of Khamenei's nearly two-hour speech was delivered in Arabic, an apparent nod to the Arab world. Iran has applauded the victory of Islamist groups in elections in 2011 and 2012 that followed the toppling of authoritarian regimes in Egypt and Tunisia.

The Supreme Leader said the Islamist electoral victories will "weaken and isolate" Israel, and that they represented the failure of what he said was U.S. policy based on "anti-Islam" propaganda.

it is obvious that the general opinion of most US citizens is not ever shown on public tv,that is what is really going to destroy our country..the fact that public opinion does not matter, only what the press and the politicians want us to see and think.

Woe to you scoffers, you will find out too late the True Power of the universe. The earth is but a footstool to Yeshua who will smite these ungodly nations. The United States and Israel are going to slow down the nuclear endeavors of Iran very soon, and unfortunately, and as usual, it will be the innocent civilians who will have to pay the price. The leadership will most likely be dead, but the Iranian general population is going to struggle for many more years to recover. It really is time to get rid of these dopes and send them back to the 12th century.

One of the concerns with the leadership of Iran is there fanatical bend. They could not win a nuclear war with isreal or the United States. That might not stop them from starting one on the theory that its better to blow up the whole world then live in a world where people have a different religion then you. One of the things that kept the peace during the cold war was that fact that the Soviet Union cared about being distroyed. They could start a war but they would not exsit after it was done.

The concern that some have is that knowing we would turn them into a glass parking lot might not deter them from trying to nuke us. The add complication is that limited nuclear war is highly unlikly to remain limited. It might start that way. There are too many people in the local area who would feel that they had to use there nukes or loose them. Then the whole world would be history

Can anyone on this website really accept allowing this psychopathic regime possession of a nuclear weapon? Google Ali Khamenei and see some of his quotes. Let's start with his believe that the 12th imam is about to appear to bring justice and peace to the world by establishing Islam throughout the world. Non believers will be eliminated. A global caliphate will be established with, of course, him as the absolute leader. Sounds like a delusional personality to me.

I don't understand why Leon Panetta is saying publicly that Israel may strike if Iran doesn't stop its nuclear build-up to supply a nuclear bomb.

I can't remember anyone from the Israel government or the IDF saying they would bomb Iran if they succeeded in their quest for nuclear arms, rather than simply their adamant assertion that their nuclear industry is for electrical power, and NOT for producing an atomic bomb.

However, if that IS the case, I'm sure that Israel and the Western countries will take this to the UN first. If they don't receive a reasonable response from Iran, then all hell could break lose.

Israel will not lose this war, just as they have never lost a war with Arab countries.

Yo, Ayatollah! This nuclear weapon thing you keep working on, I thought you guys might like some background.

First of all, our understanding of nuclear energy was made possible by Albert Einstein's "E=MC**2" equation. Then there was Robert Oppenheimer, another Jew, and known as the father of the atomic bomb -- who pretty much developed how to build one.

Come on guys, what would Mohammed think about you playing with all those Jewish toys? Next thing you know, you'll be sitting menorahs around the mosque; using prayer mats that look like Israeli flags.

Why don't you give it a rest before someone blacks your eye.
