China: 2 arrested over hit-and-run toddler

BEIJING - Police formally arrested two drivers suspected of running over a toddler who died a week after she was struck on a busy market street in southern China and was ignored by passers-by, newspapers reported Sunday.

The Beijing News and other outlets said Sunday police in the city of Foshan concluded their initial investigation and ordered the two men formally arrested, a step that almost always leads to a trial.

It did not say what they were being charged with and calls to Foshan police were unanswered.

The death of 2-year-old Wang Yue gained widespread coverage in the Chinese media and prompted soul-searching over declining morality and callousness toward the sufferings of others.

The accident on Oct. 13 was captured by gruesome security camera footage, leading to police identifying the vehicles.

For seven minutes after the first van struck the girl, 18 people walked or cycled by the bleeding toddler before a scrap picker scoops her up and takes her to her mother, who rushes into the street looking for her.

For once I hope China inflicts its worst possible punishment.

The first guy should be tried for murder. After the first wheel went over her, he stopped, realized what he had done, and deliberately drove the second over her. It was intentional.

When you have a story with people ignoring a two-year old child with the bottom half of her body crushed to a pulp, it will be time to play the "equivalents" game.

With very little effort I pulled up 2 stories from the US of girls who screamed for a half hour while they were being murdered in broad daylight in the US with many witnesses who did nothing. Google Kitty Genovese. So I think the equivalents game still works.

The only thing that makes this particular story unique is the security footage.

I know it was reported that it was darker than it looked on camera, and the fact that the mother obviously wasn't watching her child, which she should have been doing but one of the men, I believe the first one to hit her, told her father that he did stop but when he saw blood he took off. That's awful.
