Police: Fla. college drop-out found dead had planned campus attack

ORLANDO, Florida A University of Central Florida drop-out planned an attack on campus but committed suicide in a dorm before carrying it out, authorities said Monday.

Materials found in his dorm room made it appear that 30-year-old James Oliver Seevakumaran planned a wider attack, authorities said a news conference.

Seevakumaran pulled a gun on another student, who then called police, said University of Central Florida Police Chief Richard Beary. He then killed himself with a shot to the head moments later as police officers were responding to the call.

"His timeline got off," Beary said. "We think the rapid response of law enforcement may have changed his ability to think quickly on his feet."

UCF spokesman Grant Heston said the university was in the process of removing Seevakumaran from the dorm before Monday. Four makeshift explosive devices were found in a back pack, and Beary said he believes that Seevakumaran pulled a fire alarm in the dorm to get other students out in the open for an attack.

CBS affiliate WKMG reports that police found two guns in Seevakumaran's dorm room, including an American-Tech tactical .22 caliber rifle. They were traced back to an Orlando guns store. Police also found four improvised explosive devices and hundreds of rounds of ammo were, according to Julie Torres of Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Seevakumaran's roommates told detectives that he had shown anti-social behavior but had never expressed any violent tendencies, Beary said.

CBS correspondent Mark Strassmann reports that Seevakumaran had no reported contact with campus counselors nor any conduct issues before the attack.

According to Florida records, his only adult arrest in the state was in 2006 for driving with a suspended license. He pleaded no contest. He was fined $105 and assigned court costs of $223.

University police were called to the Tower I building around 12:20 a.m. after a fire alarm went off. Around the same time, the an emergency services call came in about a man with a gun.

Investigators said they discovered two guns and the makeshift explosives in the room where Seevakumaran was found dead.

About 500 students were evacuated from the building and morning classes were canceled.

Just a thought, but these dorms there must be patterned after old Florida trailer parks where anyone and everyone can do their thing with impunity and anonymity. Hard to believe that someone in that dorm didn't see some of this stuff and having former students still living in the dorms isn't right anyway; but what the hey, it's kollege time right?? They might need to tighten up just a bit on some stuff (maybe) - but not enough to make it any less fun to be livin' there, lol.

This guy was a first class wannabe, probably trying to take out some academnic-based issues on the college students around him. To suggest that a lil' ol' .22 is an assauly weapon may be a stretch even if it's all dressed up to look like mean kop tactical gear, LOL. Nevertheless, this iincident is another learning experience that these guys who have some psych soft spots are everywhere and to get a gun of any sort is silly-easy, especially in FL. The media glories in all the details, however inaccurate, so these guys get "info and inspiration" to help their misguided deadly personal cause too. Maybe a bit less info except to say another psycho-killer met his end today...period. Keeping em' guessing might actually be ok here since nobody really needs to know all the details anyway except the threat was removed. That makes 3, 4 or 5 times in one year and each time they open this up mass shootings pop up right on cue. Meanwhile in other news, Newtown coroner won't release toxicology reports and gives no explanation. At the same time however, the Newtown "authorities" release a newly discovered "detailed" spread sheet/"score card" that the 18 or 20 yr old autistic man-child shooter allegedly compiled "years" in advance. There was a 27-year-old student living in my first campus dorm, and during my senior year I had an RA who was 28. I worked at my campus library too, and I would occasionally have older-than-average students come to the front desk-- the oldest I ever encountered was 81 years old. Sometimes people don't go to college right after high school, and sometimes people take more than four years to graduate (I have a friend currently on his seventh year of undergrad). If they aren't already living in the area of their college, the answer is to live in the dorms. So, it's rare for a 30 year old to live in the dorms, but certainly not impossible nor unheard of.

By the way, the reporter Mark in the video keeps referring to a cheap semi automatic .22 long rifle erroneously as an ASSAULT RIFLE. Mark, stop looking like an ignoramous and get the story right, your own anti gun sentiments should not cloud the truth. His rifle was a varmint or pest gun, low powered and definitely not an assault rifle. The HiPoint .45 is low cost handgun but still deadly {which is why he used the .45 and not the .22 to kill himself. With armed nuts like this running around it's all the more reason to own a good gun to protect yourself.

They need to start inspecting college campuses every two months for weapons are install more metal detector because you have to remember you have student's from all over the world going to college here in the united states. So America needs to step up their game. Thank god no one gotten hurt but the devil himself and he needed help.

Such inspections are up to the school. ANY organization has the right to enforce rules on their property. If you don't like those rules, you can go elsewhere.

Many schools ALREADY routintely check lockers for guns and drugs. Safety isn't an "illusion" if vigilance saves lives.

If you aren't doing anything illegal, and have nothing to hide, such inspections whouldn't be a problem.

In any case, ALL "freedoms" come with RESPONSIBILITY, and there is no "freedom" to break the law.
