Police: Doctor apparently killed self after being caught filming patients

A local Maryland doctor took his own life while facing allegations that he took pictures and videotaped patients without their knowledge, CBS affiliate WJZ-TV reports.

Baltimore City police say they have found an extraordinary amount of evidence in his home and have contacted some of the victims, and that the number coming forward could be huge.

Dr. Nikita Levy, a former OB/GYN at Johns Hopkins, killed himself inside his Towson, Md., home.

Tasha Bynam, one of his patients, said she received a letter saying he'd left the facility, but didn't say why. She told WJZ she thought he had moved on or got promoted.

"It's disgusting that you've got to trust these people and you can't trust him," Bynam said.

Police were first alerted about Levy when another staff member told hospital security he was using personal video equipment to tape his patients.

Levy saw around 1,000 patients since getting his medical license in 1988. Baltimore police are setting up a hotline and encouraging Levy's patients to contact them.

Johns Hopkins is also carrying out their own investigation.

"Any invasion of privacy is intolerable," the hospital said in a statement. "Words cannot express how deeply sorry we are for every patient whose privacy may have been violated."
