Boy, 6, airlifted to hospital after he plunges 40 feet over Malibu waterfall

LOS ANGELES Rescue workers saved a 6-year-old boy in Malibu after the child plunged 40 feet down a waterfall.

According to CBS Los Angeles, the incident occurred a mile south of Kanan Road in Malibu at the Escondido Falls.

The 6-year-old, Hayden Frazier, was rushed to UCLA Medical Center by helicopter.

CBS2/KCAL9 reporter Jeff Nguyen said it's the kind of helicopter ride no parent wants to see their child taking.

The boy had been on a hike with his family when he got ahead of them and fell nearly 40 feet from the top of a waterfall.

Says mom Julie Frazier, "We were looking for him. We heard some screaming. We went to go find him. And basically he had fallen off the water fall."

Hayden suffered a puncture wound to his head but has no broken bones. Thankfully, for Hayden and his parents, a medical school student was nearby.

His mom says, "The doctor had him on his back. She had something applied to his head with the puncture wound. He had jackets all over him keeping him warm. He was more terrified than anything."

Hayden's family had to hike back out of the trail to their car -- about two miles -- and drive to Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA.

Nguyen reports, paramedics wanted to get Hayden to the hospital ASAP and didn't want to spend the precious time to pull his mother up as well.

His frantic parents didn't have time to get the names of all of the people that helped their boy.

Julie says, "Thank you so much for helping us. It was just a traumatic experience. And so crazy and we couldn't have done it without you guys. And you guys know who you are."

Another example of parents not paying attention to what their kids are doing. Doesn't sound like the parents were familiar with the terrain and couldn't be bothered keeping their kid in tow. An avoidable mishap.
