Mass. boy dies of carbon monoxide in running car

BOSTON An 11-year-old Massachusetts boy died of carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday after being overcome as he sat in a running car to keep warm, while his father was shoveling snow to get the car out of a snow bank.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the boy was helping his father shovel the snow in the Dorchester neighborhood but got cold, so his father started the car and the boy got inside the vehicle. MacDonald said the car exhaust was covered by a snow bank, causing the fumes to collect in the car.

"I don't know how long the boy was in the car, at some point the father was still working and was unaware of the boy's condition," said Boston firefighter Octavius Rowe, who lives nearby and went to help. "So very, very unfortunate."

When the boy was overcome by the fumes, the father went into respiratory arrest and emergency workers took both to Boston Medical Center, officials said. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital. No names were released.

Rowe said he was at home when he noticed a commotion in the street. He went outside and saw the father leaning against a pile of snow, Rowe said.

"I came over to the car where it all started and the father appeared to have lost consciousness," Rowe said. "He was semi-conscious and laying on the snow bank, and I wanted to first get him off that cold surface."

Rowe said he put the man on a flat surface to revive him. He said the boy apparently had been taken into an apartment building where a woman was administering CPR. Paramedics from the fire department and Emergency Medical Services arrived and provided oxygen to the father to stabilize him and tried to engage him in conversation to keep him alert.

"He was responsive so we were able to, at least, get him up, get him to the stairs. He did say, `My son, my son,' so he knew his son was involved or was in distress," Rowe said. "We were talking to him. He was moaning, but the only discernible thing that he said was `My son."'

Rowe said his understanding was that a snow plow had come up the street and had pushed snow back onto the bank, which then impacted the car's exhaust pipe.

Does this really need to be reported as news? Let them grieve, it's none of our business. Things like this don't need to be shared with the all of humanity. Stories like this make a person feel like crap. There's no news here, just a tragedy.

While the news is tragic and I agree we should let the family grieve, it is still very newsworthy. I have a friend whose sister died in this same manner during the blizzard of 1978. I preach cleaning the snow around the tailpipe to my own children, including a 7 a.m. call to my son yesterday morning. The reason why I believe this is newsworthy is because it is important to advise the public of the consequences of getting into a car with a tailpipe covered by snow. If traveling during a blizzard and you get stuck in a snow bank, the first thing you should do is open a window regardless of how cold it is until you have ensured the tailpipe is clear. These are lessons I learned some 35 years ago when my friend's sister passed away. She was only 17.

So sad. But I don't understand why they were out there in the first place! The weather authorities told everyone in the eastern states that this storm was coming and to STAY HOME. Why do people not listen and go out in it anyway?

The Governor of Mass. Ordered ALL cars off the roads.

They were probably just digging out the car in advance. I've done that before. It's easier to shovel snow before it gets frozen and turns into cement, and if it is going to take three hours of shoveling, who wants to get up at 4am so you can be on the road by 7am?

Makes absolutely no sense to start a car with a blocked tailpipe. If you are cold, go back in the house, which should be next to where the car is parked. Otherwise, dig out the rear of the car to uncover the exhaust pipe, then clear a path to the doors.

I'm very sorry for this family, what a horrible accident. It could happen to anybody. Who would think about an exhaust pipe being clogged??

My sincere sympathy and condolences and prayers for this family.

What an innocent mistake. I totally symphatize with the father. He was only thinking of getting his son warm. Poor poor boy. May he RIP.

The really, really sad thing is that by connecting one end of a six foot length of aluminum foil type dryer tubing to the exhaust pipe and the other end above the top of the car and covering with a blanket or tarp for easier snow removal before the snow fell and then clearing the snow from this pipe after it fell this child might still be alive.

Who on earth carries aluminum foil dryer tubing in their car on a regular basis??

Smart people in a climate where it snows a lot and you were given 48 hour warning a blizzard was coming. They are cheap and compact.
