MIDLAND CITY, Ala. As an Alabama standoff and hostage drama marked a sixth day Sunday, more details emerged about the suspect at the center, with neighbors and officials painting a picture of an isolated man estranged from his family.

Authorities say Jim Lee Dykes, 65 - a decorated Vietnam-era veteran known as Jimmy to neighbors - gunned down a school bus driver and then abducted a 5-year-old boy from the bus, taking him to an underground bunker on his rural property. The driver, 66-year-old Charles Albert Poland Jr., who was shot trying to protect children on his bus, was buried Sunday.

Dykes, described as a loner who railed against the government, lives up a dirt road outside this tiny hamlet north of Dothan in the southeast corner of the state. His home is just off the main road north to the state capital of Montgomery, about 80 miles away.

The FBI said in a statement Sunday that authorities continue to have an open line of communication with Dykes. The little boy requested Cheez-Its and a red Hot Wheels car, both of which were delivered to the bunker, a separate statement said. Authorities had said they also were delivering medicine and other comfort items, and that Dykes was making the child as comfortable as possible.

In the nearby community of Ozark on Sunday, more than 500 people filed into the Civic Center to pay a final tribute to Poland.

Poland is now "an angel who is watching over" the little boy, said Dale County School Superintendent Donny Bynum, who read letters written by three students who had ridden on Poland's bus. "You didn't deserve to die but you died knowing you kept everyone safe," one child wrote.

Authorities said Dykes boarded a stopped school bus filled with 21 children Tuesday afternoon and demanded two boys between 6 and 8 years old. When Poland tried to block his way, the gunman shot him several times and took the 5-year-old boy.

Outside the funeral, school buses from several counties lined the funeral procession route. The buses had black ribbons tied to their side mirrors.

Dykes grew up in the Dothan area. Mel Adams, a Midland City Council member who owns the lot where reporters are gathered, said he has known Dykes since they were ages 3 and 4.

He said Dykes has a sister and a brother, but that he is estranged from his family.

Adams said he didn't know what caused the falling-out, but that "he had told part of his family to go to hell."

Midland City Mayor Virgil Skipper said Dykes' sister is in a nursing home. Adams said law enforcement officers have talked to Dykes' family members and advised them not to speak with reporters, and that officers told her there was nothing she could do to help the child in the bunker.

Government records and interviews with neighbors indicate that Dykes joined the Navy in Midland City, serving on active duty from 1964 to 1969. His record shows several awards, including the Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Dykes was trained in aviation maintenance and at one point was based in Japan. It was unclear if he saw combat in Vietnam.

At some point after his time in the Navy, Dykes lived in Florida, where he worked as a surveyor and a long-haul truck driver. It's unclear how long he stayed there.

He had some scrapes with the law there, including a 1995 arrest for improper exhibition of a weapon. The misdemeanor was dismissed. He also was arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

He returned to Alabama about two years ago, moving onto the rural tract about 100 yards (90 meters) from his nearest neighbors, Michael Creel and his father, Greg.

Neighbors described Dykes as a man who once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property, and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm. Michael Creel said Dykes had an adult daughter, but the two lost touch years ago.

The Dykes property has a white trailer which, according to Creel, Dykes said he bought from the Federal Emergency Management Agency after it was used to house evacuees from Hurricane Katrina. The property also has a steel shipping container - like those on container ships - in which Dykes stores tools and supplies.

Next to the container is the underground bunker where authorities say Dykes is holed up with the 5-year-old. Neighbors say that the bunker has a pipe so Dykes could hear people coming near his driveway. Authorities have been using the ventilation pipe to communicate with him.

The younger Creel, who said he helped Dykes with supplies to build the bunker and has been in it twice, said Dykes wanted protection from hurricanes.

"He said he lived in Florida and had hurricanes hit. He wanted someplace he could go down in and be safe," Creel said. Authorities say the bunker is about 6 feet by 8 feet (1.8 meters by 2.4 meters), and the only entrance is a trap door at the top.

Such bunkers are not uncommon in rural Alabama because of the threat of tornadoes.

Greg Creel was a friend of Dykes, but he said he would not comment for The Associated Press. "I will only talk to the police and the FBI," he said.

Michael Creel said Dykes kept to himself and listened a lot to conservative talk radio.

"He was very into what's going on with the nation and the politics and all the laws being made. The things he didn't agree with, he would ventilate," he said.

James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard, put it differently.

"He's against the government, starting with Obama on down," he said.

Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, a group that tracks hate crimes, said Dykes was not on the group's radar.

Although the fatal shootings in December at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, are still on everyone's mind, Dees said he doesn't think Dykes was trying to be a copycat.

"Probably not. He had a whole bus load full of kids, and he could have walked up there and shot the whole crowd of them," he said.

"I think he's just a really angry and bitter guy with some anger management issues," Dees said. "He is just against everything - the government and his neighbors."

I have heard that the police are negotiating with *****. It would be interesting to learn just what these negotiations are. Just how would they negotiate with someone who murdered a school bus driver before going into hiding. Silly mention of ***** being a Vietnam veteran, wondering if he saw combat. Being in the Navy combat he might have seen would have been from a distance.

Can't they sneak an odorless harmless gas into the cave where this man is, that will just put him to sleep, and then rescue the boy?

The more Republicans rant and rave about the government the more right wing nut jobs come out of the woodwork. Seems to especially happen in the red states.

I would question the article saying he was decorated. According to his DD 214 info he had two unit citations. These are awarded to his unit. You wear them when assigned to the unit and take them off when you leave. Then the Good Conduct Medal. Automatically awarded every three years. You have to have UCMJ action not to get it. (Get in trouble). Service Ribbon. Everyone that completes basic training gets one. Vietnam Service Medal. Had to serve in the theatre of operations which are territorial waters, Thailand, Laos or Cambodia. He was never assigned to Vietnam. Just California and Japan. He probably served on a ship out of Japan which qualified him for the medal. Probably never stepped foot on soil in Vietnam. So all this Vietnam Vet, PTSD and decorated is all bull.

Just a thought... every neighborhood has a guy like this. Guns are everywhere and ideas like his about our government, people and a lifestyle are commonplace. How do we get help for these folks before they go off like this. These recent shooters have all been "out there" too, but somehow all manage to get by and get guns and have their freedoms intact. We need to find a solution to this oversight and put a lid on the endless violence that we are immersed in everyday and get out of this mindset of get-even and kick-A violence that pervades our culture. Gun laws so far have proved useless in all this daily carnage; surely NOT banning the wannabe look-alike military rifles that so many play tough-guy games with. Fact is, it's the Glock-type handguns that do the most damage routinely in our neighborhoods but everyone just loves 'em too. We need to really clean up our act as a society and get off this gun and violence stuff and learn how to solve problems in civilized manner!

Do you think the reason this guy got off "easy" in that little town (after the neighbors complained) is because he's white, a male, older, and in the south which cherishes its guns. You would think the local police/authorities would have had their finger on this man. I put the blame on the local authorities.

"banning the wannabe look-alike military rifles that so many play tough-guy games with"

I see a market here, a niche market, but a market just the same. I'm gonna sell plastic shoulder rests, bulked up fake rifle barrel, and fake magazine covers, to dress up a Glock semi-automatic to look like an AR-15. That way, when someone gets killed with a Glock the media can go off on the fact that they were killed by a "military styled" weapon. Just think of all the "wannabes" that will want one of these kits.

This is outrageous. He should have been in jail a long time ago. Matt6052, I'm not sure if there is anything "peaceful" about this man. He beat a dog to death and threatened people with guns and now he murdered an innocent man in cold blood so he could kidnap a small child!!

He's a white male and old. That's why he's not in jail. Plus, he's in the south, and they probably thought he was a joke.

It is highly doubtful that Jim Lee ***** will release the five year-old until his last dying breath. The five year-old represents a shield to ***** - as long as ***** holds the five year-old hostage, ***** knows law-enforcement officials will not try to rush him and potentially harm the child in the process. As a murderer and kidnapper, ***** knows he'll lose his freedom for life should law enforcement subdue him. Obviously the coward although I'm sure the child is understandably freaked beyond imagination being held by a right-wing nut job and surrounded by ammunition - air in the makeshift must be stale, hot and unhealthy beyond belief. My Prayers go to the child and his parents who also live with nightmares. You can thank Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity as well FOX News for stirring the caldron of hatred in ***** as well others like him. The hopes are ***** has a massive heart attack and dies as well the child's ability to contact the outside world the coward who holds the boy has died and gone to Hades! Sadly, both for this young boy and his parents, nightmares will be the norm!
