SAN DIEGO A San Diego mother has been sentenced to 15 years-to-life in prison for drowning her four-year-old autistic son in a bathtub.

CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV says 37-year-old Patricia Corby received the sentence Monday, about a month after giving a tearful guilty plea to second-degree murder.

On March 31, Corby drove to a police station and told authorities she had killed her son, Daniel, by filling a bathtub and holding the boy under water until he died. His still-wet body was wrapped in a blanket in her back seat.

She later told an investigator that her entire life was dedicated to caring for her son.

Several distraught relatives addressed Corby before the sentencing, including the boy's father, Duane Corby, who called her "a loathsome person."

He told his wife, "I hate you with all my heart and soul. You are a selfish person. To you, I say adios."

After several angry family comments, she moaned, "Stop, stop."

Members of the victim's family -- who did not want to be identified by name -- said Daniel Corby was not severely autistic and was doing well in school.

"You had no right to take our little boy's life," Daniel's aunt told the sobbing defendant.

The aunt said Daniel was probably looking down from heaven asking, "Mama, why did you kill me, when I was doing so well?"

According to testimony at a preliminary hearing last September, Corby contemplated suicide before holding her son down in several inches of water until he was lifeless in the family's Carmel Valley condominium.

Prosecutor Dino Paraskevopoulos told Judge Charles Gill today that Corby hit Daniel in the head before drowning him.

On two occasions before she killed her son, Corby asked the child's godfather if he would take care of the child if she wasn't around, the prosecutor said.

Corby's attorney, Mel Epley, disputed the prosecutor's contention that Corby struck her child before drowning him.

Epley said Corby loved her son very much, but she became severely depressed and wanted to kill herself.

The attorney said his client deeply regretted her actions.

"She didn't want a better life for herself, she wanted to die," Epley told the judge.

A horrible act she committed, but where were these relatives who testified against her when they could have helped her caring for the child? No mention of the father in his life. If she wanted to commit suicide, why didn't she? Mothers who kill their children are always depressed and suicidal. They should put themselves out of the misery if that is the excuse, not their child - children.

15 years to life???????? Are you kidding me? She should get life with no possibility of parole!

I don't want her to be executed. That would be the easy way out. I want her to live a very very long life (in jail).

I'm sorry but if you can't handle your child then give them to someone who can. I know families who would happily adopt an autistic child...She doesn't deserve to live...No child deserves to die...especially at the hands of the very person who is supposed to love and protect them. Drowning is a terrible way to go and unless he was indeed unconscious from say a blow to the head that baby fought to breathe...that is a natural reaction...if you are drowning you will fight for air! This POS held him down and killed him...a baby...anyone who condones her actions is no better than she is

You're right. No child deserves to die but if you think someone could have been found to take care of the child instead? In a perfect world, maybe but in this world? Highly unlikely.

15 years. Wow! What a nice sentence, 15 years to life. I guess I should not comment, I don't know what this verdict means. I read about criminals being sentenced to say 20 or 30 years but there is seldomg any mention of how long they will serve in prison. Likewise I will read in the papers the amount of bail which sounds pretty impressive but it is seldom mentioned that the bail is actually 10% of the amount mentioned.

She sounds like someone who was struggling. Autistic kids, even those who are not severely autistic, can be difficult to take care of. "Doing well in school"? There's "doing well in school" considering what you are capable of doing and there is really doing well in school. Contrary to recent reports, not all kids grow out of autism and not all of them are able to go on to college to build impressive careers. News stories of those who can, like news stories of people in comas with brain activity many years later, are the exception rather than the rule for most autistic kids.

The fact that her husband told her he hated and loathed her is interesting. I would want to know if this was just since the death of their son or he hated her before that. I would also want to how much help she actually got on a daily basis from others, including family members, before I would convict her.

My thoughts exactly, SKEEZIX06. I don't believe in making any excuses for the mother's behavior, however, I'm curious how much those outspoken relatives were around to lend a hand. It should have been evident to them that this woman was needing help.

Two wrongs don't make a right!..No mother kills her child unless circumstances become too much for her!!..How much help did the family give this woman?..I'm not saying that what this woman did was right but you MRPAULGEORGE don't know the full circumstances, anymore than I do or anyone else on the outside for that matter!!...The fact that she asked the godfather if he would help out in the event of anything happening to her, tells me that she was struggling to cope!!..Cold blooded murderers don't turn up at the police station to confess their actions!!

Irrelevant.

A child is dead - a murderer will likely walk free one day.

Put a bullet in her head and be done with it!

MRPAULGE0RGE says:
And why is she not being executed?

From allowing illegals to get amnesty to allowing mothers to "only get 15 to life" no wonder the USA is going down the toilet.

She should be held underwater and forced to drown - to experience what she did.

If you think our country is so terrible, you are free to leave any time you want. But I doubt you whiners will find a better one to suit you.

Aw, RAFTERMAN11, don't be so hard on MRPAULGE0RGE! He's just doing his job as a fine upstanding "Christian." After all, the mother was not showing any previous signs of being under duress, like asking the child's godfather if he would take care of her son if she was no longer around. The mother is just a woman, a second-class citizen to most of these so-called Christians. She probably ranks even lower than illegals on their hate scale.
