ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. A 15-year-old boy remained in custody Sunday night as detectives tried to piece together what led to the shooting of five people, including three young children, who were found dead in a New Mexico home.
The teenager was arrested on murder and other charges in connection with the shootings, which happened Saturday night at the home in a rural area southwest of downtown Albuquerque, said Lt. Sid Covington, a Bernalillo County sheriff's spokesman.
Detectives did not immediately release the victims' names, but word of the shootings traveled quickly through the law enforcement community, and officials began offering their condolences for Greg Griego, a spiritual leader known for his work with firefighters and the 13 years he spent as a volunteer chaplain at the county jail.
"Chaplin Griego was a dedicated professional that passionately served his fellow man and the firefighters of this community," Fire Chief James Breen said in a statement. "His calming spirit and gentle nature will be greatly missed."
Jail Chief Ramon Rustin said Griego was instrumental in the creation of the Metropolitan Detention Center's chaplain program and worked to get inmates integrated back into the community.
Griego also was a former member of the pastoral staff at Calvary, a Christian church in Albuquerque. As part of his work there, he oversaw the Straight Street program for jail inmates.
Covington said detectives were working to positively identify the five victims as well as the teenager's relationship to them.
"Right now we're to the meticulous points of processing the scene and collecting physical evidence, and this is a vast scene with a lot of physical evidence," Covington said.
Authorities said each victim suffered more than one gunshot wound, and several guns were found at the home, one of which was a semi-automatic military-style rifle. Investigators were trying to determine who owned the guns.
Authorities also declined to release details of any conversation that the 15-year-old had with investigators. The teenager was booked on two counts of murder and three counts of child abuse resulting in death.
The Associated Press is withholding the suspect's name during the initial investigation because he is a juvenile.
On Sunday, a police roadblock cut off public access to the narrow dirt road that leads to the home, which is surrounded by trees and an agricultural field on one side.
Neighbors said they saw the first police cars and ambulances arrive at the home Saturday night. The road was blocked and word of the shootings began to make its way through the neighborhood.
Peter Gomez, a 54-year-old carpenter who lives about 200 yards from the home, said he had seen the family a husband and wife and their four children pass by many times but didn't know them personally.
"It's a horrible thing," Gomez said. "You see all this stuff that happens all over the country, the shootings in the schools and theaters, and then it happens right here. It's sad."

Funny how all these types of mass murders happened under Obama's watch including the murders with the Fast and Furious Guns he and Eric Holder supplied the Mexican drug cartels with that killed hundreds.
Maybe Obama should not allow those who are Democrats and left wingers only not to have so-called assault rifles since they commit the most crimes with them.
So few people are ever prosecuted for trying to obtain guns illegally. How many people who fail background checks are ever put in jail?
Of course in this case the person who purchased and owned the guns illegally is already dead.
So, if one is using a "Jump to Conclusions" mat one can assume that likely the father was a felon and in possession of the guns illegally.
If the child took his family out there must have been family problems - Daddy got the most bullets so maybe Daddy was doing secret scoliosis checks on his 15 year old son.
If the 5 had been killed by a drunk driver nobody would care.
If the 5 had been killed with knife nobody would care.
If the 5 had been killed with a hammer nobody would care.
Mention the word "gun" and everyone turns into an expert on fireams and wants to burn the Constitution.
I guess you do love your Mother the Queen of England. Yea, what about the dirty oil sand pits in Canada or the opening of the new harbor for gas tankers, sounds like an American capitalist system to me. Looks like your Health Care System is ranked 30th, by the World Health Organization. From Canada Conference Board, "but the results also reveal a disturbing fact showing that relative to its peer countries, Canada's performance is weak on key indicators."
The Marxist, Lenin, and Trotsky method of arguing is: pick one weakness of your oppent harp on that one point as much as possible, use facts that only support your position, call your oppent names and stupid, because if this is done enough you might get enough people brainwashed to believe your way is the best way. Most Libertarian, socialistic and anarchist, movements throughout history have started in this way (with the exception of Spain pre-world War two), from Chomsky, whose intellect I admire.
Canada does have less gun deaths but you fail to mention your violent crime 7,510-5,999 per 100,000 rated 8th in the world. Britain for instance has the most violent crime compared to any other European nation rated 2nd worldwide. So if you understand math there sure be a correlation across the board no guns equals no violent crime plus less gun death. It does not, so your numbers are meaningless in any debate, which renders your argument to an angry person's personal opinion.
You cannot possibly know if I hide a gun under my pillow or CC or for that matter if I walk in fear for my life at night. Just another presupposed idea to make your oppent look bad, or maybe a bored person who should be committed for evaluation for mental problems, for the life of me why would one want to live a life like all others or become like all others.
I would have to say violent crime is not related to guns but is correlated to lack of jobs, "The relationship between employment and crime at the community level the relationship is equally ambiguous. Crime in a community is the outcome of the intersection between the propensity to commit a crime and the opportunity to commit a crime." by Shawn Bushway and Peter Reuter, but, then again, "And during the current downturn, the unemployment rate rose as the crime rate fell. Between 2008 and 2009 violent crime fell by 5.3% and property crime by 4.6%; between 2009 and 2010, according to the preliminary Uniform Crime Report released by the FBI on May 23rd, violent crime fell by another 5.5% and property crime by 2.8%." The Economist Newspaper.
So there, even my numbers can be taken and given to make any point I want, but I at least give both side of the numbers game.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton today announced the agency's fiscal year (FY) 2012 year-end removal numbers, highlighting trends that underscore the administration's focus on removing from the country convicted criminals and other individuals that fall into priority areas for enforcement.
ICE priorities include the identification and removal of those that have broken criminal laws, threats to national security, recent border crossers and repeat violators of immigration law. Overall, in FY 2012 ICE's Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations removed 409,849 individuals. Of these, approximately 55 percent, or 225,390 of the people removed, were convicted of felonies or misdemeanors - almost double the removal of criminals in FY 2008. This includes 1,215 aliens convicted of homicide; 5,557 aliens convicted of sexual offenses; 40,448 aliens convicted for crimes involving drugs; and 36,166 aliens convicted for driving under the influence.
